Itinerary

Begin your day trip with pickup from your cruise port in Naples, where you meet your guide and travel to the UNESCO-listed ruins of Pompeii.

Upon arriving, embark on a guided tour through the impressive archaeological site, with stops at Vetti’s House, the Thermal Baths, the Lupanare brothel, and the Forum, each buried by volcanic ash during Mt. Vesuvius’ eruption in AD 79. As you go, hear the history of each site, as well as the full story behind the fateful day almost 2,000 years ago when the prosperous city was destroyed.

Afterward, relax with a complimentary pizza lunch, accompanied by a drink. Refueled, hop aboard your coach to Mt. Vesuvius for a climb to the summit with your guide. Soak up panoramic views of the Bay of Naples from the top, and walk around the crater at 3,900 feet (1,200 meters). Don’t be surprised if you see plumes of steam issuing from the sleeping volcano as you peer down into its depths.

Your day trip concludes with transportation back to your original departure point.

Un impressive

Jorge_R, Sep 2025
Can not take pictures and stay with guide she went too fast Didn’t say she was moving on while we were told take pictures included lunch was pizza or pasta but was told pizza would take too long to make so I wanted pizza from Naples but wasn’t allowed

Find another tour!

Alina_W, Jun 2025
The most unorganized tour. Multiple handoffs to different guides. Everyone confused and very little communication. The tour guide in Pompeii cared more about conversing with her Italian friend that joined us then she did about ensuring that the group was following her or understood what she was saying. We spent a long time waiting for her to finish her conversations before we continued the actual tour. Plus, for whatever reason, we were never even taken to the museum itself. I’ve been there for years and that is truly something to be seen and we did not have any time left to go to the museum. Lunch was included, but even lunch was chaotic and we thought we were getting pizza but instead wind up with salad. Then we waited for what seemed like a long time for yet another guide and another bus to take us to Mount Vesuvius. I would not recommend booking this if this is your first time going to Pompeii

Response from Host, Jul 2025

Dear customer the burocracy to access to Pompeii is very hard and this is the reason of the waiting there in Pompeii. Guides know it and just wait for the entrance tickets to start the visit. By the way you are right, more communication would be useful. Best regards

Crowded, but good.

DANIEL_H, Jun 2025
Pompeii Group size was way too big. We lost a ton of time waiting for folks that didn’t show up or later got lost or didn’t make it back in time. This is in control of the operation and needs to be fixed. Bring your own water. Buying water at Pompeii is 2euros each, 4 for a coke. Guide was good, but the place is way overcrowded. Find a time to go off season if you can. Skip the summer if possible. Vesuvius was fun, but rushed. Only 80 minutes to hurry to the top, take photos, grab a souvenir, wine, and head down. Be prepared for a hot hike in summer - leave the jacket at home. The altitude doesn’t cool the place off much.

Pompeii was amazing but

Zachary_W, Apr 2025
The tour was excellent!!! Pompeii was amazing! Just an fyi to get to the crater it is about 1.5 miles with loose rock and decent incline but well worth it. BUT our driver……. While driving in town and on the highway he spent at least 50% of the time staring at his phone and texting. That was scary because I was in the front row. Another 25% he was hitting on/talking to tour guide. It was VERY irresponsible, unprofessional and dangerous. That is not what I paid for. He really should be talked to on his job description.

M t Vesuvius & Pompey

Gailann_W, Nov 2024
Our guide Rita was little to quiet to start but became increasingly cordial as the day went on. Our Pompey guide focused on the architecture of Pompey which was very interesting.

Needs Improvement

Frances_R, Oct 2024
The pick up from the cruise port wasn't timely, then surprised another pick up from the train station was made... the pickup process wasn't smooth & there were way too many people on this tour. But the people were timely, the tour operators could have been more efficient & more informative. We did way too much waiting & walking wherein that time could have been spent at the two main attractions, Mt. Vesuvus & Pompeii Ruins. Lunch was not impressive at all. The tasting was a nice break, but nevertheless it was a sales/marketing stop. There was no narration during the bus ride. This excursion needed to be smaller groups, spend more time at the attractions & more lunch options.

Pay attention to local free day

patty_h, Oct 2024
Mt Vesuvius was wonderful~ I felt we could have used extra time to walk the entire crater(but most tours should have enough time)~ we did not because of the Pompeii experience. Our tour was on a Sunday that was free for locals~ it took us an extra hour to get there~traffic~ the site was so crowded it was hard to even see the guide and know which area she was talking about~ she never looked around to see if everyone was following, everytime she went around a bend the earpiece stopped working~ even after being told numerous times she continued as usual~ very disappointing for my party and even more so to those of the tour group not able to keep up~ before Mt V we were to have pizza which we were looking forward to~ didn’t happen we had to have pasta pizza was not an option. I realize they could not control traffic~ but could have started earlier to avoid the crowds and traffic and guide could have waited for all to be near before explaining~ Pompeii was waste of our money because of this Mt V was great

Okay, long day, timeline not accurate

Katie_B, Oct 2024
The tour of Pompeii was very informative. The views from vesuvius were astonishing. The timrline says approximately 7 hrs it was more like 8 which really made me feel rushed as I was on a cruise ship. At Pompeii we had a meal them too much down time this could have been used traveling to vesuvius and gotten us back earlier. I did share my concerns with guides and they ensured we had returned to the ship in time.

Vesuvius and Pompeii tour very rushed if you have to return to a cruise ship

SJawad_A, Sep 2024
We were told by Viator before we booked the tour the climb up Vesuvius was 15 minutes, up and 15 minutes down. The guide told us the hike was 30 minutes one way The guide is correct. The hike takes 30 minutes each way. The hike is quite steep We were told by Viator we would have plenty of time to visit Vesuvius and Pompeii and easily return to our ship before it sailed. This is not true. We climbed Vesuvius, but we only could spend 20 minutes to visit Pompeii before we had to break away from the tour in order to return to the ship before it sailed. The Pompeii tour is at least 90 minutes Kudos to Rita ( tour organizer) for getting us back to the ship before it sailed Tour guide at Pompeii (Suzie) was very poor . She lost one member of the group before we got to the ruins , which cost us time. When I approached her that we would be leaving early , her attitude was extremely poor. She told me "yes I know" and walked away. She did not tell me to inform her we were leaving, or that she wanted the headsets. She wanted both things. We returned the headsets to Rita. When we had to leave the tour Susie was at least 5 minutes ahead of me. There was no way to tell her we were leaving. If she wanted to know when we were leaving and she wanted the headsets back she should have told me when I told her we were leaving early Susie is by far the worst tour guide I have had the misfortune of following while using Viator.

AVOID AT ALL COSTS!

james_l, Aug 2024
What a massive let down for many reasons...DO NOT BOOK!!!!! Rushed around Pompeii as I thought and back to the ship with literally 1min to spare. The tour guide (Eliza?) was excellent however but even she acknowledged we were rushed and missed half of the things we should have saw. She saved at least some of the day for us. I have instigated a complaint with viator about this now and request a full refund. This trip did not live up to expectations. Late to start by almost an hour due to no bus then waiting for others in central Napoli...not mentioned. 'tour guide'... scruffy and didn't speak to the bus at all. He couldn't be less bothered. No guide up Vesuvius as noted on the booking. Just dropped off and told to rush up and down.... it's knackering and my wife was in tears. Stopping at some random shop for limonchello....not on the list and clearly the 'tour guides' mate. Stopping for pizza for ages... opposite Pompeii and the group were desperate to go. Tour guide if you can call him that beggered off somewhere else. Delaying the start of the main event the Pompeii tour so we had 1hr 15 mins. The lady who took us was brilliant but she was annoyed how late we were. Swapped bus randomly to get us back to the port.we made it back with 1 min to spare... literally. All in all I wouldn't have paid £12 for this tour!

Too long hanging around but overall good

Angela_H, Jul 2024
Great tour of Pompeii. Our guide was very knowledgeable and entertaining. After the tour we were left waiting for far too long for our coach to Vesuvius. Must have been two hours which yes it included lunch but hanging around for a hour outside Pompeii entrance for ages in that heat wasn’t pleasant at all. When we were picked up air conditioning on the coach was terrible and it was a very hot day.

Wonderful experience

Geraldine_P, Jul 2024
Climbing mount Vesuvius and visiting Pompeii was a wonderful experience and our guide was very knowledgeable and pleasant.

Group was too large.

Monica_M, Jul 2024
Group was too large - we would be in a single line and at the end the headphones would disconnect from the tour guide Maria. We missed many key points because we were too far back. The meeting point was not clear and the bus was late. They did make accommodations to take our lunch to go or we would have missed Vesuvius entirely. We had 40 minutes at Vesuvius which was not enough time to get to the top.

Decent offering….could be better

Aditya_L, Jun 2024
The hike up Vesuvius is great. I thought the tour spent too much time at Pompeii leaving little time for Vesuvius. Tour guide was well informed, but very soft and dull. So was a bit of a strain listening in and keep interest levels high. Lunch was ok…avoid the pasta. :)

Well-organized good value trip

Alexander_K, Jun 2024
A great value! The reviews stating that it was disorganized must not know how to follow directions. Off a cruise, you need to walk past the security shack to the roundabout just before the Main Street (you’ll know you’re in the right place because of the dozens of bickering cab drivers). Board bus to Pompeii. The Pompeii tour was good (lots of walking). Then you get to eat at a restaurant (included- choose from pizza, pasta or salad). Then board bus to Vesuvius (scary drive up a narrow mountain trail). Stop at limoncello shop for samples (be mindful of alcohol limits on cruise ships). 1.5 hour to climb/descend Vesuvius (just enough time with a 5-year-old). Bring drinks and euros, credit card may not work at summit shop.

Great day in Pompeii

Rick, May 2024
Great pickup. Great tour guide and bus driver. Plenty of time to explore and great and well organized lunch.

Would recommend

Colleen_H, Nov 2023
Seeing Pompeii. The guide was knowledgeable and went at a good pace. Unfortunately we couldn’t go all the way up to the volcano due to circumstances beyond anyone’s control. On the ride back to the ship it would have been nice if the new tour guide had shared her knowledge a bit more.

Gotta do it at least once

Purplesue8888, Oct 2023
Must do when visiting Naples. What a feeling of accomplishment when climbing to the top of Mt. Vesuvius. Note: No restrooms are there. Pompeii was not what I expected. In a good way. Pizza was the best in all Italy ports

A Great excursion from Naples.

David_M, Sep 2023
The excursion was excellent. We took a bus up to Mt Vesuvius and hiked to the top for the amazing views. Then on to an excellent tour of Pompei. Lunch was excellent. Them main improvement would be for the tour to provide some cool water. It was a very hot day and a nice cool water after the hike and again after walking around Pompei would have been excellent. .

Pompeii and Versuvius Great Memories

Clare_H, Aug 2023
Very well organised, Verauvius in the heat was hard, but Limoncello shop stop before made it easier, great tasting and surprising ingredients! Pizza lunch break also ideal, fantastic, huge pizza! Pompeii guide Miguel was great, lots of fun and made sure we stopped in the shade wherever we could, very eye opening. A fantastic memory moment. Rosa made it very easy to fit it all in plus get back before the ship sailed.

What an amazing...

Catherine_O, Jun 2023
What an amazing excursion. Rosa was great and kept everything organized. They say you get a slice of pizza, but the pizza was like a medium size in the United States. It was delicious. The tour at the Volcano was good and Pompeii was also amazing. Our tour guide Mikael was funny and very informative. I would rate this a 10 :)

Wonderful

ShirleyM_G, Jun 2023
Guides were professional. They managed time we’ll and responded to questions easily. Especially nice was the attention Michael paid to the children. He kept them close to him and made sure they were able to ask questions.

Chaos

cazd, Jun 2023
Terrible trip. Unorganised and chaotic. Too many random pick ups and stops. Being told there’s no toilets so they take you to their friends shop (whose toilets are filthy), when there are toilets. Being stopped and searched by the police as they don’t have the right documents. Chaos getting people back to the ship - we were all late. Guides leaving halfway throughout the trip or not being provided. Like others have said, the total amount you get at Pompeii is shocking…we got 50 minutes!! And Mt.Vesuvius not much better, it also takes longer than 25 minutes to the top and round the crater unless you’re young and fit! Wouldn’t recommend using this company as a shore excursion, too stressful. Also put me off Viator who recommended this trip.

A bit chaotic

Megan_P, May 2023
This was our first group tour, and probably our last. We were not impressed. Our excursion was a full seven hours+, and in that time, we only spent one hour and fifteen minutes at Mt. Vesuvius, and one hour and forty five minutes touring Pompeii. There was so much time wasted being shuttled to different pick up points, shuffling people from one bus to another, and the service providers arguing about things. It was really frustrating especially when they have you standing waiting for twenty minutes and then say “Hurry up, we don’t have much time.” One group barely made it back in time to their boat, and that was after we were all out on a smaller bus and sped crazily back to the port. Also, no one communicated that we would not have access to a toilet for almost five hours, nor did they seem to care when we complained about that. We had six people in our personal group, so this was an expensive tour. We’d have been a LOT better off hiring a private taxi or car to drive us around, both financially and experientially. This was really unprofessional. Lastly, while our tour guide at Pompeii was knowledgeable and funny, he also fixated his commentary on the brothels and phallic symbols around Pompeii to a degree that was unnecessary, especially given there were nine children in our group. Poor taste in my opinion.

Pompeii is amazing- we...

Emily_H, May 2023
Pompeii is amazing- we just wish we had a little more time. You could walk around for hours and this tour only gave you 2. It was very informational and the guide was great. We probably didn’t need 1.5 hours for lunch. The walk up to Vesuvius was worth it- we are experienced hikers so it wasn’t bad but I think other people were surprised at the difficulty. It was a great day!

Excellently organized tours to 2 sites

Gordon_S, May 2023
Very well run tour from Naples. We arrived on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship. Minor issue, it was difficult to find the tour leader off the ship as her instructions weren’t clear. After some messaging in Viator, we figured out the meeting spot. We went in a group of about 20 to Pompeii first and met with a passionate Pompeii guide. He led us through numerous sites with detailed commentary the whole way. Pompeii was much larger and fascinating than I imagined. We then had a lunch with a choice of cheese pizza, salad, or gnocchi with a tall can of pop. The pizza was a giant portion and tasted great. We went to Mount Vesuvius next and about 1 hour of free time. It wasn’t enough time for us to make it to the top unfortunately and we were in good fitness. With an extra 30 minutes, we could have made it. It was a strenuous uphill hike on a dirt path with many loose rocks. Appreciate this tour was run efficiently as we were split up in groups throughout - some people were going to different spots like Sorrento and with different languages. Got back to the cruise port just a bit later than expected and experienced driver got through busy traffic very well.

Could use better time management

Cendall_C, Apr 2023
This is the second time I have done this tour, but this time around I was sharing the experience with my parents (in their 60s) and my son (3yo). I felt the first time was much better organised.. I knew the meeting point from my previous tour, yet I still managed to be one of the last to check in for the tour - the nondescript list of names for people on the tour is very hard to miss amongst the sea of tourists and taxi drivers all vying to drum up business with offers of day trips to various places. We got underway with little fuss once everyone was checked in (we weren’t the last, even though we were technically late). At Pompeii things got hectic. We were separated into groups based on where we were off to for the afternoon.. we were part of a smaller group with just 5 others and felt quite neglected in getting organised with headsets etc and being given guidance on how long we had for free time/toilet break near the meeting point. We were so neglected that we nearly got left behind. Our guide was full of incredible knowledge, but we were stationary for long periods while he spoke. This was fine to a point, but we had a 3 year old in a pram so we wandered a little just so he could keep moving. Our pram was a sports one so tackled Pompeii pretty well, but no consideration was given to us by the guide in terms of alternate routes to take to get to a particular room or building he wanted to show us. We were often left to hurriedly take our son out, fold down the pram, carry it through doorways (some were tight, even with the pram folded up!), pop him back in again and find the group who were often out of range of the audio headsets by the time we were done. The guide ran way over time but we were torn between wanting to keep learning and wanting to get to lunch. He wrapped up the tour by hitting on one of the 20-somethings of the group, asking to become Facebook friends so that they might meet up during her holiday. Lunch was delicious, though we only had 12 minutes to eat by the time we finished with our guide at Pompeii and the food was delivered. Not ideal with a 3 year old.. My mother and I were looking forward most to the climb at Mt Vesuvius but were disappointed in how hurried this was. We were not given adequate time to get to the top at all. On the bus ride back to the cruise ship we learnt that only 2 people made it to the top and they are experienced trail runners who jogged up to the top! The bus ride back was terrifying! Our driver was speeding around the tight turns coming down the mountain. At one point I could see the speedometer and we were doing 110km/h in a 50km/h zone! I was never more thankful than when we arrived back at the cruise ship!

Parts of tour were good

William_P, Apr 2023
Tour group was huge. Bus was comfortable and our tour guide on the bus was OK. Tour guide at Pompeii was very good. Pizza lunch was terrible. Weather did not cooperate. Average tour.

Astonishing Pompeii and Vesuvius in a day

David_K, Oct 2022
Really great day that we enjoyed so much. Brilliant Pompeii finished off with a lovely pizza before being zipped off to conquer Vesuvius.....well the last 200m anyway. The hosts were great and made sure that we got back to our ship in time despite very busy traffic in Naples

WOW Pompeii

Cynthia_M, Oct 2022
Pompeii was much larger a city than I thought. The ruins just went on and on. Needs to have more of the people casts on premises.
