We always like to try local cuisine when we travel so we try to always book a food tour. The food tour in Deep Ellum with Stephen was wonderful. Great selection of foods and the wide variety of establishments. He’s very full of knowledge of the history of Deep Ellum and the establishmentsand made great selections of food.
Response from Host, Feb 2026
We’re glad you took the time to share this. When the walk feels cohesive from start to finish, it tends to leave a lasting impression. You’re always welcome back on Secret Food Tour!
Cheryl_G, Feb 2026
Not much history given. The food was good, but portions of each single item were extremely small. Side dishes should be provided with brisket and taco, and the surprise dish was a joke. I’ve been on many food tours and this was the worst one .
Response from Host, Feb 2026
Thank you for sharing your perspective, Cheryl. Our tours are thoughtfully curated to showcase a variety of what makes the local food scene unique, with each stop selected to highlight different flavors and stories, rather than full meal portions. Guests often appreciate the balance and pacing, as it allows them to experience multiple specialties in one tour. We do understand that preferences can vary, especially for those who have joined other food tours, and your feedback is noted as we continue refining the experience. We hope you'll consider another Secret Food Tour in the future.

Morgan was GREAT. Professional and well prepared. 5 different and interesting stops. Morgan also introduced us to Deep Ellums incredible history back in the late 1800.
Highly recommendable experience with a cute personal touch. Thanks Morgan. KR Tom & Maryanne, well travelled foodies from Denmark.

Be prepared if there is rain in the forecast. We got soaked, so the experience could have been a 5 if the weather was better. A bit difficult to hear our tour guide, as each venue we went too was packed with other customers & loud music. Food was good, best part was the tacos.
Response from Host, Feb 2026
Thank you for sharing your feedback with us. It’s encouraging to know the food wasn’t just tasted but remembered. Another Secret Food Tours would be a pleasure to share with you!

Great food. Two different deserts at the end were good but a little much. If rain is in the forecast you might want to cancel and rebook. Valentine’s Day was thunder, lightning and very wet, flooded streets, etc. A tip for the guide: If you have a large group, present somewhere where it is quiet. Four of the five stops were lots of people and loud music. Black’s bbq was not a great choice at 1:30 in Deep Ellum. No tables, hundreds of people, but the Pecan pie was good.
Response from Host, Feb 2026
Hi Scott, thanks for joining our Deep Ellum food tour and for sharing your thoughts. Deep Ellum is a lively district and part of the experience is visiting popular neighborhood spots at their peak energy. Guests often mention they like seeing the area exactly as locals do, but your point about hearing our guide with larger groups is fair and we will pass that along so guides can better position the group when sharing stories.
Weather in Texas can also turn quickly and Valentine’s Day certainly delivered a dramatic one. Tours run rain or shine, though guests who prefer a calmer walk often choose to reschedule when heavy storms are forecast.
Still, we appreciate you taking the time to outline the experience and hope the flavors still made the day memorable. Until your next Secret Food Tour!

This Deep Ellum food tour was an absolute highlight, and our guide Morgan made it even better. She was amazing, friendly, engaging, and incredibly knowledgeable about both the neighborhood and the food scene. As we walked through Deep Ellum, she brought the area’s vibrant street art and rich history to life, making the tour feel immersive rather than just a series of food stops.
The food itself was outstanding and perfectly showcased bold Texas flavors. The slow smoked, cowboy style BBQ brisket was tender, smoky, and packed with flavor. The Texas chili con carne was rich and hearty, with just the right amount of spice. The adobada (al pastor) taco was a delicious contrast—savory, juicy, and full of authentic seasoning. For dessert, the boozy Southern pecan pie was indulgent and memorable, and the vintage soda was a fun, nostalgic touch that tied everything together.
Being a private tour created a relaxed, social atmosphere that made it easy to connect with fellow travelers while still feeling personalized. Between the incredible food, the fascinating stories, and Morgan’s excellent guiding, this tour was the perfect blend of culture, history, and indulgence. Highly recommended for anyone wanting to truly taste and experience Deep Ellum.

You get a history of a very cool Dallas walking area that has concentrated food establishments, mostly unique to that area. Delicious BBQ - cant get much better than Pecan Lodge. 5 different stops. A bit hurried, but that's ok. Not much walking as everything is conveniently located next to everything else.

Being in Texas everything was beef except dessert. Damian, our guide offered a chicken option for the taco if we wanted but we chose to stick with the beef. Brisket was exceptional and all the dishes were delicious. Our group was only the four of us traveling together so Damian took us around the murals and had time to give us more of the history of the Deep Ellum area. Damian was very personable and knowledgeable of the area.

Overall great experience.. things we never would have saw in Dallas..,started of with the brisket place.. was very good.. then the candy shop(which was fun with the aged sodas and candy) then great chili with a beer.. the chili was good.. then a optional stop which I think is a must see is the mozzarella place (where you see mozzarella cheese made by 30 plus employees.. the owner came out and spent a great deal of time with us explaining how’s it made.. then stoped at the oil and spice place (optional although I think a must see) could taste over 50-70 different oils of all flavors flown in from Italy.. along with all kinds of spices.. (must see if you cook at all) then ended the tour with a pie place that the pie looks like a 1lb of pie of choice of 6 different.. the murals on the alleys were great to look at.. the extra stops that were not advertised were great and he took time for us to go their

I’ve done many food tours across the world and this was my least favorite. It felt disorganized and it didn’t match the description. According to the description, we had a “secret” food item and a warm biscuit with honey, neither of which were on the tour. There were three heavy beef items in a row, brisket, chili and a taco. We spent a long time in a candy shop where everyone was just standing around and waiting to leave. None of the restaurants felt ready for us (except the chili place). I wanted to love this, but it was a bit of a miss. We were expecting 6 stops and we had 4 (plus the candy shop) in 3 hours. Every other tour I’ve been on has more than 4. It felt dragged out.
Response from Host, May 2025
Hi Jennifer, thank you for taking the time to share your experience with our Dallas food tour. We value feedback from well-traveled guests like yourself, especially those familiar with the food tour scene. It’s clear you came in with high hopes, and we’re disappointed that the tour didn’t meet those expectations.
Our goal in Dallas is to showcase the bold, hearty flavors the city is known for—especially its rich barbecue and Tex-Mex heritage. Many guests have praised our selections as authentic highlights of the experience, but we hear your concern about the repetition. We strive for variety and balance, and your point about having three heavy stops in a row is fair. That’s something we’ll be reviewing closely with our local team.
As for the pacing and number of stops, we always aim for sufficient food-based experiences along with cultural insights throughout. In some cases, a stop may offer more than just a bite—it could include storytelling, local history, or an inside look into the neighborhood’s character. That said, it shouldn’t feel like time is dragging or that any stop lacks purpose. Your note about the candy shop in particular is helpful; while some guests enjoy the nostalgic, relaxed feel of that moment, we understand it needs to stay engaging for everyone.
We appreciate your honesty and the detail in your feedback—it gives us the insight we need to make meaningful improvements. While this Dallas tour may have missed the mark for you, many guests have had fantastic experiences with our other locations around the world. Each city has its own distinct flavor and rhythm, and we’d truly love the chance to welcome you again on another tour that might be a better fit for your preferences. If you’d like to discuss this further, please feel free to reach out to us at info@secrettours.com.

Morgan was a wonderful guide and went above and beyond suggesting other things to do on our adventure of Dallas. For the tour she has us try each each bite in different ways with certain sauces, with/without addition items too creating many more to each dish. The walks between each stop is extremely short. Highly recommend.

I almost cancelled my tour due to personal reasons, and boy I'm I glad I didn't! This secret food tour was one of my favorite activities while I'm Dallas! Our tour guide Isaac was amazing and very knowledgeable about the area and different restaurants we visited. He was really laid back and showed us additional places. The art murals were breathtaking!
