Itinerary
Choose a departure time to suit you, and then meet your personal guide at your Budapest hotel or another location of your choice in the city.
Hop inside your private, air-conditioned car or minivan (depending on size of your group), and journey northwest through picturesque hills to Eger, northern Hungary’s second-largest city.
Composed of tree-lined streets, elegant baroque and rococo houses, and a medieval castle, the city and its surrounding countryside is also famous for producing high quality red and white wines, including Egri Bikavér, commonly known as the 'Bull's Blood.'
After about 90 minutes on the road, arrive and take a guided walking tour of Eger’s landmarks. Stroll through the handsome streets and visit Eger Basilica, the impressive 19th-century neoclassical cathedral.
Admire the statues, portico, and painted domes of this vast church, and stop to see the city’s 17th-century red sandstone Minaret — the northernmost Turkish minaret in Europe.
Wander around Széchenyi Street and Dobó István Square to take in the beautiful Minorite Church and other baroque and rococo architecture, and afterward, head to Eger Castle to explore its 13th-century battlements, chambers, and museums.
Soak in sweeping views over Eger from here, and after a break at one of the city’s atmospheric cafes, continue to a local winery. Meet your friendly winemaker host and enjoy tastings of up to five local red and white wines, including Egri Bikavér.
Savor the different flavors and aromas and learn about each wine’s history and production. Complement your wines with a typically Hungarian ‘peasant’ meal, including a tasty country dish from the area and a hearty goulash stew.
Appetite sated Hungarian-style, drive back to Budapest where your day trip concludes with a drop-off at your hotel or your chosen central location.

First-class guide included conversation on Hungarian history which I thoroughly enjoyed on the ride over to Eger from Budapest and back. A tour and tasting of two local excellent wineries, lunch in a local fine hotel, a brief walking tour of Eger a charming town not to be missed, and the opportunity to purchase some of the local famous wines. Highly recommended and I live in the Napa Wine Area of California!

This was a wonderful tour of Eger. Our guide Gabo was excellent. His knowledge of Hungarian history was most impressive. Our lunch and wine tasting was very good.
