1 Day in Jackson Hole for First Timers

Curated by Kate Lowetha writer who loves a national park visit more than anything.

Jackson Hole holds a place in my heart, and I'm always eager to visit, whether in the summer for fishing and national parks visits, or in the winter for sledding and time in the snow. With Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone National Park nearby, it’s easy to head out and explore the winding roads and stunning landscape.

With one day in Jackson Hole, you should get an early start to head out to Grand Teton, the closest national park. You can spend some time in the park before choosing an afternoon activity, such as white-water rafting or horseback riding. Here's your 1-day Jackson Hole itinerary that's designed for first-time visitors.

If you only have time for one thing, make it a visit to Grand Teton National Park.

Snowy winters and warm summers are typical for Jackson Hole.

Morning

Start your morning in Jackson Hole early to make the most of your visit. Jackson Hole is the perfect jumping-off point for a visit to Grand Teton National Park, and you'll find plenty of day trips offering early morning pickup for those who want to see the sunrise from the park. You'll have fewer crowds to deal with, and it's a great time to see wildlife, such as bears, bald eagles, and bison.

Afternoon

Once the day has warmed up a bit, head out on the water for an afternoon of river rafting. The 1,080-mile (1,735-kilometer) Snake River stretches from the Oregon border to Yellowstone National Park, and you'll find plenty of outfitters in the Jackson Hole area offering guided rafting trips for all levels. Learn about the landscape from your guide, and bring your camera to capture any bald eagles you spot. It's guaranteed to be fun, and you're guaranteed to get wet!

Night

End your day in Jackson Hole the cowboy way, with a horseback ride and cowboy dinner. You'll get all geared up to ride along the Buffalo Fork River and Snake River to take in the Tetons in the background. If you're looking for an evening option that doesn't involve livestock, there are plenty of restaurants with dance floors in the town of Jackson, such as the lively Silver Dollar Bar & Grill inside The Wort Hotel. Be sure to wear your dancing shoes!
