1 Day in Houston for First Timers

What I remember about my first trip to Houston is that it was hot, so very hot, and we went to Space Center Houston (a dream for someone who once wanted to be an astronaut). Visits after that repeated the experience, including the same high temperatures and a visit to the always intriguing Space Center, but now I've branched out to explore Houston's food and art scenes while I'm there, too. There's plenty in this expansive Texas city to keep you busy for many days.

With only one day in Houston, make sure you visit the Museum District for an (air-conditioned) stop at the Children’s Museum of Houston, the Houston Museum of Natural Science, or the Museum of Fine Arts.

If you only have time for one thing, make it Space Center Houston.

For most of the year, Houston is hot and humid, with a chance of afternoon rain—dress accordingly.

Morning

If you want some colorful pics to memorialize your visit to Houston, this tour of Houston's street art scene is the perfect option. Cruise around in an open-sided electric cart and hop out to snap a selfie in front of hidden murals most locals don't even know about. Your savvy guide will share information about the artists who bring this artwork to life. It's a fun way to explore the city.

Afternoon

When the afternoon temps heat up, head out of downtown to Space Center Houston to learn all about NASA's space program. Check out space suits worn by astronauts, then go inside the shuttle replica mounted on top of the original NASA shuttle carrier aircraft. The best thing about the Space Center is all the interactive exhibits that let you experience a tiny bit of what it is like for the men and women who go into space.
