This guided Super Jeep tour takes the guesswork out of the experience by carrying you beyond the city’s light pollution in a custom-built vehicle designed for Iceland’s rugged terrain. Travel in comfort as your guide monitors weather and aurora activity in real time, adjusting the route to reach the best possible viewing locations.

Along the way, learn how the aurora borealis forms and why Iceland offers some of the most reliable conditions for spotting it. While sightings depend on natural factors and can’t be guaranteed, you’ll have the option to rebook at no extra cost if the lights don’t appear (subject to availability). After the hunt, return to your hotel in Reykjavik.

Even though we only saw a glimmer of the aurora, I still loved the tour overall. The guides were great and were really dedicated in their attempt to get us to those lights. I am sure that I will come back to Iceland someday, and I would not hesitate to go out again with this crew!

Great tour guide

Tour guide was creative and honest about conditions. He found a spot for us to see lights even w bad conditions. Courteous and funny. Highly recommend

The tour guide was amazing , he knew the spots to go to! If you’re trying to go see the northern lights this is the place to book with

Great night .

Excellent northern lights excursion, great off road vehicle that can get you away from other larger groups of tourists. Great tour guide/driver / photographer. Great night . Hot chocolate great touch on freezing night . Would highly recommend. 👍

Check the weather before booking.

The Mercedes Minibus was not a super jeep. I understood this would be a more private family only tour. We had a rental car and there was no pickup option where we could safely park our vehicle. We were staying in Keflavik and asked about being picked up outside of Reykavik, no options then the tour took us back to Keflavik. We were to receive hot chocolate with biscuits but they didn’t bring any cups but they brought shot glasses for liquor. We enjoy a good beer or wine but not liquor. We understand that environmental conditions determine the success of seeing the Northern lights and appreciated the tour guide’s attempts to find a location and it was raining most of the evening there was one gap where we saw the green hue across the sky. Note, you see it better in pictures. Overall we laughed through the tour at the absurdity of the experience.

Jackpot!

Kassidy_G, Mar 2023
Because of the un-predictability of the Northern lights we waited on booking, and when we heard the forecast was perfect for a sighting we called around 6pm day off to book. The less expensive tours were sold out already so we went with this. Thankfully the forecast was right and we got to see what the guide described as “the jackpot” of auroras! Con: it’s really a mini bus with 4WD, were ~20 seats on the “super jeep” so manage expectations if you’re thinking it would be more intimate. Pro: guide was funny, good driver and photographer! We had the best time.

Do not book with Viator

Paul_S, Jan 2023
We booked the Big Jeep tour, but on the night it was a minibus that took us on the tour. The guide explained that the Jeep was broken but we would get a partial refund for the cost of the difference between the Jeep tour and minibus tour. However Viator are refusing to give a partial refund.

Although the clouds...

Sandra_D, Jan 2023
Although the clouds prevented us seeing the northern lights, we really enjoyed the guide and the super jeep. Unfortunately it rained almost every day we were in Iceland and the northen lights were not meant to be. I would do this tour again weather permitting!

Yikes - avoid this Northern Lights tour...

Matt_R, Dec 2022
On my first night in Iceland, I booked this tour. The forecast for the Northern Lights was very high that evening. The driver was not a very good guide and did not share much valuable insight into the Northern Lights during the tour. He drove to one location, where we sat for four hours in the cold without seeing much but a small streak of the Northern Lights. I understand the lights can't be controlled, but sitting in one location all evening was not the best chance to see the lights (and even if it was it was not the best way to experience them). I learned this for sure when I chose a different operator the following night and had an amazing experience. Even though the other operator took us to a location where the Lights were strong, we continued to find new and cool locations to see the lights the entire evening - they actually put effort into "hunting" the best views and different perspectives - which this tour did not do in any way. Don't book with these guys unless you want to sit in a cold, windy field all night and hope the lights show up... there are much better companies to book with in Iceland.

Fantastic trip

Our guide was very knowledgeable and went out of his way to find the lights. Would definitely choose the hero tour.

Super jeep bummer

mark_h, Nov 2021
We went on a northern lights trip and did not see any lights and we had a free rebooking if we did not see any. I called to rebook and they said that they were sold out. I was able to rebook a trip on my own, but had to pay full price.

Just pure awesomeness

Dakota_L, Oct 2021
The tour guide was knowledgeable and friendly, a lot of fun to talk to. The northern lights put on an amazing show, which is out of their control, but we wouldn’t have been able to see them without the tour guide taking us to a perfect spot. 10/10 would recommend.

Misleading tour description

Fatemeh_B, Mar 2020
This was not a small group as expected . 20 people is not a group. Maybe there should be more details on vehicle pictures ( Super Jeep was a mini bus and not a Jeep ! ) as well as the number of people that would join the tour instead of small group which can be confusing.

Recommend!!

S_R, Mar 2020
Guides were great and appreciate the effort to find a good location with clear sky. Did manage to see the lights and had a fantastic time! So glad to have picked this trip over a bus ride out from the city.

Absolutely Amazing

Ryan_C, Mar 2020
Our tour guide was funny, full of facts and fictional information about the lights and even provided shots and hot choc with cookies! We were lucky enough to see the lights, they were absolutely incredible, even once we’d left the original site our driver pulled over quickly because they became stronger for a short time! Our guide took plenty of photos of us all and really helped capture the amazing experience! Nothing bad about this trip, it’s just VERY VERY cold so wrap up warmer than you think you’ll need to!

Cancelled tour. Referenced website to reschedule. Website didn’t recognise booking reference and therefore didn’t work. Didn’t respond to any other communication (email or text). Pick any other northern lights tour over this one.

We saw the northern lights and it was amazing! Tour giver was very informative and friendly, took lots of photos of us

Tried and failed

Allison_E, Jan 2020
On one hand, I have great respect for this company because they won't waste your time if there's no chance of seeing the Northern Lights. The day we had scheduled was stormy, so they canceled and re-booked for the following night, which had some chance of clarity. But on the other hand, there's still no guarantee you'll see them, so be prepared for some disappointment. The tour was really exciting and the driver was the MOST amazing at driving in snowy and windy conditions that I've ever seen...he was also a really nice guy that was obviously trying to hustle and find a place where we could see the Northern Lights. Unfortunately, it didn't happen. The company honored its guarantee and re-booked us, but they had to cancel (it was our last night, so we didn't get to see the Northern Lights). I think you have to go into this tour knowing that nature will do its thing and there's no guarantee that you'll see the Northern Lights. That said, I believe this tour will give you the best shot because their vehicles can go places a bus NEVER could.

Fun, but Cold :)

Brooke_W, Dec 2019
Its about 45 minutes to the area in the middle of nowhere with abandoned houses and a couple hours outside in the cold or in the bus waiting and hoping for the northern lights which we didn’t see. If you don’t, you can re-book a future trip at no charge. We were glad we tried, but it was a waste of time sitting on a bus in the dark in the middle of nowhere. About halfway through they put up a table and give you shots of “black death” and cookies. If you sit in the back of the truck, hold on especially over bumps. If you get carsick, sit up front. There wasn’t any information given over the loud speaker on the way there so there really wasn’t much to learn. We met some cool people on the bus and played some games while we waited like Heads up. A bunch of other jeeps are parked out there with you and your travel in pairs with another super jeep. When they pick you up, they are high vehicles, but they have stairs that you climb up into the vehicle on.

Northern Lights Tour

Marilyn_D, Dec 2019
The tour guide was very gracious and eager for us to enjoy the tour. The hot chocolate and biscuits were good and the hot chocolate helped to warm us. It was a cold night and the wind was strong. We could just faintly see a touch of light color on the horizon. We tried a different location but the colors were not brighter. The stars, however were brilliant. We were allowed to book on another tour at no additional fee.

Making the best of a good thing!

cvrountas, Dec 2019
Our guide, Aron, was fun. Brought the Brennivin to keep us warm as we waited for the lights to appear. They did! Patience paid off!!

Great experience

Monica_O, Nov 2019
The tour itself was great and Magnus, the tour guide, was excellent. He is a local and deeply experienced on the Northern Lights. I will recommend this tour in a heartbeat. The hiccup was with Viator due to lack of communication with the local company, after numerous emails confirming the number of people for the tour, they still weren't clear with that information to the local agency, which created a problem but thankfully it was resolved by the time we got picked up.

Amazing experience & guide

Samuel_M, Dec 2018
We visited the northern lights, we were very lucky & got to see them in all there glory. Our guide Omar was truly amazing & made the experience much more enjoyable. Would 100% recommend this tour.

I gave this tour five stars even...

MarthaE_P, Apr 2018
I gave this tour five stars even though we didn't get to see the northern lights, it was a really well planned and friendly tour, with a very small group too. It's a real shame we didn't have more time in Iceland, but the weather overall was really bad the four days we were there. We'll go back for sure!

Tour operator cancelled on the first...

Darin W, Apr 2018
Tour operator cancelled on the first night due to bad weather which was fine but their communication after that was pathetic. Didn't respond to inquiries to rebook and then sent us an email no call 2 hours before a 10 pm departure two nights later that we were good to go on a night when there was pretty much zero chance to see the lights. Get an app which shows you when there is a chance to see the lights Aurora is good and find a different operator to use for the tour. Viator did their bit trying to contact the operator - all on the operator here.

Great idea but unfortunately weather...

Benjamin_T, Apr 2018
Great idea but unfortunately weather didn't hold up and no sign of the lights. Got to caravan with three super jeeps to a spot near a church were they made us hot chocolate and we drank icelandic schnapps and ate cookies. Not really icelandic pastries as it says but still good. Was last night of my trip so couldn't go again but they did offer to let me on for up to the next year. Not sure if I will make it back before then but it would have been much appreciated if I had taken this tour earlier in the trip.

Didn't get to see lights but always...

Faith_S, Apr 2018
Didn't get to see lights but always a risk. Thought the term super jeep meant a small vehicle. It is still a shuttle so group was still larger than Inexpected. We had about 16.

Total rip off. Stick to the amazing...

Usama A, Mar 2018
Total rip off. Stick to the amazing glacier / snowmobile / Golden Circle Tour where you need to invest in a Super Jeep and the benefits they bring. Our tour started an hour late for pick up and we were notified very late this would be the case. Once picked up we then waited for 45 minutes parked in a petrol station for other jeeps because we had the hot chocolate for later which they would share and the other jeeps were late coming off the glacier. We watched many of the far cheaper large tour coaches drive past on their way to catch the small window of Northern Lights whilst we were stationary looking at cars pump petrol. Eventually we left and drove no more than 20 km outside Reykjavik where light pollution was high and we positioned ourselves 150 metres down a track slightly off the main road no need to have invested in a super jeep to arrive when the larger tours were already set up and had been viewing the Northern Lights for sometime - unfortunately by the time we arrived it was extremely cloudy and snowing. Our final destination was a shell of a delipadated house complete with spray can graffiti that looked like a snowed in crack den not exactly into the wilds of Iceland!. Three super jeeps then parked together in order to share hot chocolate and a table and cups which only out tour had been equipped with so no need to have paid for a smaller intimate tour. Our tour guide was unapologetic about the experience and gave little insight to the Northern Lights and none on Iceland to keep us entertained. On the way back to Reykjavik she repeatedly stated that we had seen the Northern Lights 2 mins, small glow through cloud, very poorly, only visible through a long exposure camera and not the naked eye with light pollution. This would mean that we would not be eligible for a 2nd chance experience. On attending the Northern Lights Museum the following day and talking to an expert they explained that they were surprised that either the tour was not cancelled due to weather conditions and late pick up. They explained they cancelled and reschedule their tours that left late and rescheduled to not disappoint clients. They also explained that they expected that a super jeep looking to have a the best chance of viewing the Northern Lights should travel farther out on that evening. I understand there is no guarantee to see the Northern Lights but for this cost we expected the guides to offer us the best chance and unfortunately those on the cheaper coach tours were given that as we lost 105 minutes of the total tour due to slack planning and delays in pick up. No offer of any second trip, discount or refund was forthcoming. Overall highly unsatisfactory and a night to remember for all the wrong reasons.
