- Self-Drive Option: Only for travelers with their own rental car for the full tour. No seats in guide’s vehicle if you arrive by taxi, transfer, or shuttle. Without a car, book the pickup option.
- Meeting Point: Self-drive tours meet in Grindavík at 10:45 am (exact location sent after booking). Parking fees not included.
- Post-Hike: Self-drivers may follow the guide to Seltún and Kleifarvatn in their own car or leave independently.
- Fitness Level: Moderate hike on uneven ground. Private tours recommended for slower pace or extra breaks.
- What to Bring: Layered waterproof clothing, sturdy hiking shoes, water, snacks, gloves, phone/camera. Walking poles and crampons provided if needed.
- Lava Visibility: Glowing lava only visible during active eruptions—never guaranteed. Tour adapts to any new accessible areas.
- Extra Stops: Seltún and Kleifarvatn only included for tours returning to Reykjavík. Weather permitted.
- Weather Impact: Hiking time and route may change due to weather for safety and comfort.
- Safety Rules: Tour follows official volcanic activity guidance. If access is closed, the route changes to safe alternative volcanic sites.
- Winter Driving: Roads can be icy, snowy, or windy—allow extra travel time when driving to the meeting point.
- By booking this tour, you confirm that you have read and understood the full tour description. While the volcano area is publicly accessible, joining a guided tour is a personal choice made for added safety, local knowledge, and deeper context. In the case of an active eruption, the itinerary may be adjusted to prioritize access to the current eruption site and main viewing areas. Although we may follow the same trail used by others, this remains a fully guided experience.

Our guide, Gudni, was amazing! Very well prepared and knowledgeable. The hike was fun, the views amazing and the lava fields incredible. There is a wonderful surprise in the middle of the tour that will absolutely amaze you, I guarantee it.

Great excursion! Great scenery, walking on lava was really cool. Tour guide Oddi was very friendly and informative - cooked hot dogs over the hot air between the lava rocks. Also, Carlos (office administrator) was very helpful in helping us work around my screwup on the pickup point.

Wonderful hike and guided tour of the volcano and surrounding area. The guide even heated us up Icelandic hotdogs from the geothermal heat. It was windy, but that’s normal for Iceland. Expect it!

This hike is for experienced hikers! The incline was steep and coming down you hike along rocks The ground is uneven and slippery rocks. It was absolutely fabulous! We had a great guide who thoroughly explained the landscape. I highly recommend this hike if you are experienced.

The gentleman that did the hike was very knowledgeable, better yet he broke the hike up into manageable chunks. He would tell us were to hike to, we would all stop as a group and he would pass on history, legends or important culture. There were surprises along the way, and a bunch of strangers became friends. I would highly recommend.

Our guide, Oddi, was fabulous. He was knowledgeable, entertaining, and kept us motivated as we walked up 265m to the lava field. The scenery is breathtaking and it’s humbling to realize you’re standing on lava that is only five years old. Wear good shoes, dress for the weather, and plan for a full day.

Dora is an amazing guide! She was very knowledgeable and answered all my tour related questions and silly questions about Icelandic culture. She was also very good at ensuring all members of the group at various hiking levels were comfortable. Had an amazing, memorable experience. Highly recommend!

Several local stops to witness evidence of eruption and disruption in town followed by a moderately strenuous three hour hike to magnificent views of the lava flows. No active lava at this time. Our guide Sigrun has expertise in volcanology as well as a locals perspective and stories of recent eruptions. She was personable and authoritative and very helpful. There was even a fun surprise and treat at the peak of the hike.

Haffi was amazing, we really enjoyed understanding the history and context behind what we were looking at. I appreciated that a local person led this, and Haffi was able to relay the seriousness of recent eruptions with some funny anecdotes in between. The surprise in the middle made this experience 100/10.

You can hike this solo but felt the tour guide brought much knowledge and a really cool trick at the top of the volcano hike that I won't spoil. Knowing where/how to talk and where to look at the fissures was probably unique and missed had we done this hike by ourselves.

Haffi was great, knowledgeable and funny and able to hike backwards. This is a hike so wear appropriate shoes and get ready to work a bit but the pay off is worth it. You will witness the history of Grindavik and how it has dealt with living in a literal changing planet with awe inspiring vistas and truly surreal and heart breaking stops.

I highly recommend booking this hike. Although you can hike independently, you'll miss out on the volcano's history. Oddi, our guide was an expert who kept us safe and brought proper gear in case of an active volcano. The hike was very easy. I definitely recommend having a guide! Feel Comfortable being able to walk on lava.

We got lucky to get Oddi as a guide. 100% hands down the best guide we’ve had on an excursion. Outrageously knowledgeable and courteous of all the people on the excursion. He does this hike all the time so he knows EXACTLY where is safe and where isn’t to walk when you’re on the volcano surface. Very unique and awesome experience doing this tour. Just be warned the hike up does take effort and time so prepare yourself with snacks, water and proper weather gear just in case Mother Nature turns sour. Does get extremely windy as you get higher on your hike be cautious of that. Would HIGHLY recommend this tour especially with Oddi

Oddi went above and beyond our expectations for this Volcano hike. He was very personable and adjusted the locations we saw and stopped at, based on our hiking abilities and what we wanted to accomplish. We had an amazing day experiencing the "warmth" of the 2021 eruption and seeing various hot springs. definitely would hike with Oddi again!

The lava fields truly are something else, and we’re glad the surprise along the way left a lasting impression. At 2Go Iceland, we always aim to make each tour unforgettable.
They’re not kidding about being prepared for wet weather, so bring waterproof outers if you want to stay dry. Very interesting tour, lots to see and learn (unless you’re already a volcanologist). We walked out onto the 2023 eruption crater, cool enough to walk on with shoes/boots, but still hot enough to steam vigorously when it rains. We had a hotdog repast at the crater, provided by our tour guide (Ott), cooked with energy emanating from fissures. Hot dogs here are goo-ood!.
If you’re not as fit as you think you are (like me!), you’ll get winded on some of the uphills, but it’s doable and the guide is attentive. Lastly, wear boots.

Your tip about waterproof gear and sturdy boots is absolutely spot on — being well-prepared makes all the difference out there!
Oddi was amazing! My husband is fascinated by volcanos and he was geeked out the entire day. A private tour is a splurge— but in this case well worth it. Even in a small group the tour has to be accessible to everybody. But with a private tour we were able to go further and Oddi even had time to take us on a few extra stops. He surprised us with hot chocolate and homemade goodies at the top, let us measure the temp of the steam, took us to a black beach, etc etc. He clearly loves his country and what he does for a living. It was the best way to spend our last day in Iceland.

This hike was one of the true highlights of our trip to Iceland and Norway. It is strenuous, but if you are fit you don't want to miss it! Our guide was wonderful and the landscape was surreal.
