- Self-Drive Option: Only for travelers with their own rental car for the full tour. No seats in guide’s vehicle if you arrive by taxi, transfer, or shuttle. Without a car, book the pickup option.
- Meeting Point: Self-drive tours meet in Grindavík at 10:45 am (exact location sent after booking). Parking fees not included.
- Post-Hike: Self-drivers may follow the guide to Seltún and Kleifarvatn in their own car or leave independently.
- Fitness Level: Moderate hike on uneven ground. Private tours recommended for slower pace or extra breaks.
- What to Bring: Layered waterproof clothing, sturdy hiking shoes, water, snacks, gloves, phone/camera. Walking poles and crampons provided if needed.
- Lava Visibility: Glowing lava only visible during active eruptions—never guaranteed. Tour adapts to any new accessible areas.
- Extra Stops: Seltún and Kleifarvatn only included for tours returning to Reykjavík. Weather permitted.
- Weather Impact: Hiking time and route may change due to weather for safety and comfort.
- Safety Rules: Tour follows official volcanic activity guidance. If access is closed, the route changes to safe alternative volcanic sites.
- Winter Driving: Roads can be icy, snowy, or windy—allow extra travel time when driving to the meeting point.

While the volcano area is publicly accessible, joining a guided tour is a personal choice made for added safety, local knowledge, and deeper context. In the case of an active eruption, the itinerary may be adjusted to prioritize access to the current eruption site and main viewing areas. We got lucky to get Oddi as a guide. 100% hands down the best guide we’ve had on an excursion. Outrageously knowledgeable and courteous of all the people on the excursion. He does this hike all the time so he knows EXACTLY where is safe and where isn’t to walk when you’re on the volcano surface. Very unique and awesome experience doing this tour. Just be warned the hike up does take effort and time so prepare yourself with snacks, water and proper weather gear just in case Mother Nature turns sour. Does get extremely windy as you get higher on your hike be cautious of that. Would HIGHLY recommend this tour especially with Oddi

Oddi went above and beyond our expectations for this Volcano hike. He was very personable and adjusted the locations we saw and stopped at, based on our hiking abilities and what we wanted to accomplish. We had an amazing day experiencing the "warmth" of the 2021 eruption and seeing various hot springs. definitely would hike with Oddi again!

They’re not kidding about being prepared for wet weather, so bring waterproof outers if you want to stay dry. Very interesting tour, lots to see and learn (unless you’re already a volcanologist). We walked out onto the 2023 eruption crater, cool enough to walk on with shoes/boots, but still hot enough to steam vigorously when it rains. We had a hotdog repast at the crater, provided by our tour guide (Ott), cooked with energy emanating from fissures. Hot dogs here are goo-ood!.
If you’re not as fit as you think you are (like me!), you’ll get winded on some of the uphills, but it’s doable and the guide is attentive. Lastly, wear boots.

Oddi was amazing! My husband is fascinated by volcanos and he was geeked out the entire day. A private tour is a splurge— but in this case well worth it. Even in a small group the tour has to be accessible to everybody. But with a private tour we were able to go further and Oddi even had time to take us on a few extra stops. He surprised us with hot chocolate and homemade goodies at the top, let us measure the temp of the steam, took us to a black beach, etc etc. He clearly loves his country and what he does for a living. It was the best way to spend our last day in Iceland.

Our guide, Silgrún, was wonderful…friendly, knowledgeable & fun…we learned a lot! We also got a LOT of steps in (~6 hours, ~4.5 miles). The massive scale of the lava field is difficult to describe, as is the wide variety of different lava types all over.

We embarked on a privately guided journey to the Reykjanes Peninsula, where we climbed the Fagradalsfjall volcano (eruption 2021). With the guidance of our knowledgeable tour guide, we carefully traversed the vast expanse of black lava fields, mindful of the potential dangers beneath our feet. The seemingly solid surface of the lava fields can easily crack and split, revealing treacherously deep crevices. We took a break to enjoy the experience, indulging in steaming cups of hot chocolate and homemade Icelandic desserts. Our efforts were rewarded with a view of the newest additional volcanic landscape near Grindavik.

This tour was great! Oddi did an amazing job customizing the tour for my 18 yr old nephew wanting a challenge and my 70 yr old father, fit, but not as young as he once was. My nephew got to walk on lava, while remaining safe with the very experienced guide. They also got some extra treats, which were well received. Oddi was wonderful and an informative guide! We learned about the history of Iceland, the volcanic eruptions in Iceland and how they differ from other types of volcanic activity in other parts of the world. Well I thought this would be a bit of a walk, how wrong was I haha. It was amazing even though I’ve never been hiking before, I didn’t really know what to expect but the guide Sigrun made sure we were ok all the time and took it at our pace. She was so knowledgeable and we had a great time. The views were breathtaking!! It didn’t feel real at the top of the mountain so peaceful. To stand on the 2021 larva and feel the heat in the cracks was incredible, thank you so much!
