Fantastic experience with our guide Alain, he has a l9t of information and knowledge to share. Being able to get up close to a volcano and appreciate the vast amount of lava that once flowed around it, its a real eye opener, then to be able to walk on that very lava fields is phenomenal, you can literally feel the heat below you if you sit down and if you put a hand between a crevice you can feel the steam from inside, you have breath taking views along the whole route, once you reach the top you have spectacular views out to the coastal village of Grindavik and the current eruption site. I would 100% recommend this tour

It was an amazing day with all the differences in weather that one can imagine from rain to mix to snow to blizzard. The volcanic land scape is like being on another planet. Be prepared of any weather. Day we went, early spring, the ground was soft and sloppy. Wear good water proof boots. Overall our guide was extremely knowledgeable.

Wow wow wow, this did not disappoint! From frozen lakes to hot springs to lava fields and volcanoes - what more could you want from a day trip! Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and made sure he chatted to the group individually aswell as a whole which was lovely. The lava fields from 2 years ago was just an epic experience.
The hike over lava fields can be abit unsteady as you have to be precise and the hike itself is around 4 mile. Some people on our trip were complaining about the hike so don’t be shocked when you go on a volcano hike you have to hike 😅
Mind blowing experience… would definitely recommend

It’s a good hike. The views are absolutely stunning. We enjoyed every step of the way. Our guide gave us a steady pace and well-timed stops to take some great pictures. The highlight was reaching the 2022 lava flow which filled the valley in front of the volcano. It was fascinating to see steam pouring from the crevices and fissures like an alien landscape. A truly special walk.

Wonderful trip, excellent hike to the volcano site. Very educational, good description of past events that has led to the geographical features seen.

My wife and I had a great time visiting the volcano eruption site and the other sites we went to. It was amazing to see that the lava was still steaming after having erupted several years ago. We visited an ancient fishing village, an ancient fault line and the beautiful southern coastline. Our guide Tom who was born and raised in Iceland was a wealth of information, not only about the sites but Iceland overall. He explained the history of Iceland and the Icelandic culture as well. It was all very interesting. This tour was well worth going.

The tour is well organised. We made multiple stops in different areas (geothermal and volcanic areas, cliffs and bridge between continents).
The guide (Elias) was extremely nice and professional and provided us with interesting information regarding volcanic phenomena.
The hike was fun.

Our guide was informative and very helpful at a few of the more challenging points of the tour. The bus, unfortunately, had mechanical problems which delayed our start (we waited to be picked up for over an hour), but we still had plenty of time to visit all of the locations listed in the itinerary. The replacement bus was full and uncomfortably cramped for the long rides required to reach all of the sites.
The hike up to the top of the volcano was unfortunately a little more challenging than we anticipated, which was no fault of the guide, of course. Walking atop the cooled lava flow at the bottom later, where steam vented eerily from fissures, more than made up for that! While helping us across, the guide took one of our phones and shot numerous pictures of us together through the billowing mists.
The Reykjanes drive by, which doesn't sound all that interesting from the itinerary, proved otherwise. The largely abandoned town of Grindavík, where a volcanic eruption in 2023 impinged on its development, was fascinating, if slightly uncomfortable because of scale of the destruction. The cooled lava flow between the homes and the cracked pavement and buildings were remarkable. We stopped there for lunch at a local cafe serving truly fresh seafood. a point omitted in the itinerary, for those concerned about stopping for something to eat during the long drive (and really should be added to the itinerary).
The stop near the lighthouse atop a tall hill, which could be viewed from a distance but not actually visited, would benefit from a more detailed description. The coastline there, though stark, was incredibly beautiful! Yes, there were some awesome sea stacks, but just a short hike from the parking lot, waves breaking in the "troll baths" (some very large tide pools), sent water high into the air above the viewing platform. From the location, it was possible to photograph both the lighthouse and rising moon to the east, as well as the setting sun sitting just above the ocean far off to the west.
Our greatest disappointment was the "Bridge between the Continents", which was anything but. Although the itinerary claims it spans the rift between the tectonic plates, the gap is actually just a small gorge and the plates do not meet there at all. It might appeal to those looking for a fun photo op, but won't be of much interest for those looking to explore a genuine geological feature. It was, nonetheless, a fun way to end the long day.

Elias was a great guide, really personable and knowledgeable about the history of Iceland and volcano in particular.
The views were sensational from the top of the hike in all directions and although a little challenging if you dont walk much, nothing too strenuous.
All of the other stops were also fantastic. It can be challenging fitting in so much at this time of year with limited light, but Elias did more than enough to ensure we saw most things.
If you want something a little different to the usual tours, then this is the one.
Ps dont forget to bring crampons in winter, you'll need them 😬

The tour was great cover many places in shorty time and tour guide was amazing and knowledgeable about the area
Ted_T, Nov 2025
Loved this tour. Ottar was an amazing guide. Loved the hike through the lava fields and the drive around Grindavik. Saw a lot of the lava devastation in the town from the recent eruption.
Scott_B, Aug 2025
Good day seeing the site of the recent eruptions. Also got to see some other cool things including where the North American and European tectonic plates meet. We did also stop by Blue Lagoon and got to look in. I'm not sure why there is so much interest in it, given that it's man made, filled with geothermal plant water and has a backdrop of a geothermal plant. There are so many natural wonders in Iceland to see!

Incredible tour, over 20K step day and worth every step✨🥂🌋…. incredible views, incredible sights, & friendliest tour guide!!!!

This was a fun tour covering a lot pf places. A little fast paced but it’s really fun if you would like to visit a lot of places in short time

Be ready for a good workout hiking to the crater. Plenty of sites to see afterward. Excellent adventure.
Ming_H, Mar 2025
The guide, Sarah, presented a lot of information, history and incidents about the places we visited. She also played multiple icelandic musics. These make us learn more about iceland. We were given sufficient time to walk around the scenic spots. This tour has good picks of scenic spots. The volcano hike is not difficult but the view was quite magnificent.
Annica_R, Feb 2025
Had a great and enthusiastic guide who took us to see the lava fields and tell us all about the recent eruptions.
Leanne_B, Feb 2025
This was amazing and our guide was so knowledgeable, would highly recommend. So well planned and various stops along the way
Gary_C, Feb 2025
We took this day tour during a short stay, in order to maximise the number of sites we could see. Was a great day out and we felt that we achieved a large amount during the day.
We got picked up from bus stop 6 by coach at around 8.30am, the coach was comfortable and warm. It was raining heavily on the day so make sure you have the correct waterproof gear on, including backpack covers or you'll be in for a soggy day. As an aside, bus stop 6 does not have any shelter from the elements, so get your waterproofs on before you leave the hotel, we joined a large group of other travellers seeking shelter across the road in an office doorway, not sure the office staff would have been pleased if it was later in the day!
The views were simply stunning and it was great to stop regularly and to hear commentary local history from out guide.
The hike element of the day is not too taxing, we were out for about 2 hours. The weather was not too kind to us on the day we went with high winds and driving snow, so the views were limited but, seeing the smoking lava fields were superb. I would give 2 bits of advice:
1) If you are going outside the Summer....... take the right outdoor gear, layers, waterproof top and bottoms, hat and gloves, it gets really cold and the weather can change quickly. Hiking boots are also essential. I would also take a change of footwear, socks and bottoms. You can leave your bags on the coach, so it is worth taking extra clothing to stay warm and enjoy the whole day,
2) Make sure you eat a good breakfast before you go and take some snacks with you. You can stop and eat at the Blue Lagoon but, that is not until around 1.30pm, so you would be seriously hungry if you skipped breakfast. I would also take a flask or a insulated mug with a hot drink in next time, was cold when we got back on the coach from the hike.
Our trip dropped some people off at the Blue Lagoon whilst we went on to the lighthouse and the continents bridge, both great photo opportunities.
It is a full-on day trip, we didn't get back until after 6pm but, if you are on a short stay trip it is a great way to get a flavour of Iceland, the stunning scenery and the geological make up of the island.
Overall, I would recommend this trip and enjoyed it thoroughly.
Hats off to our driver and guide for making it such an enjoyable day.

this tour was cancelled. The alternative trip was Glacier lagoon tour which is excellent. The volcano tour was probably possible if it was kept at a safer distance.
Response from Host, Sep 2024
Dear Nonette_P,
Thank you for sharing your experience with us. We’re glad to hear that you enjoyed the Glacier Lagoon tour, which we offered as an alternative.
The safety of our guests is always our top priority. Unfortunately, due to the volcanic eruption and the unsafe conditions it created, we had to cancel the Volcano Hike. We understand that this may have been disappointing, but ensuring the safety and well-being of everyone involved is paramount.
We hope the alternative tour provided you with a memorable experience, and we appreciate your understanding in this matter. If you have any further comments or would like to discuss your experience, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us directly at info@bustravel.is
Thank you again for choosing to travel with us, and we hope to have the opportunity to welcome you on another adventure in the future.
Kind regards,
Andrius

the hike was a great experience, even though the weather did not cooperate. Joanna was and excellent tour guide.

From majestic lakeland scenery to exciting boiling mud pools. A great overall view of the volcano and surrounding area after a relatively moderate hike. Got close to and even on the volcano too. The two guides were incredibly knowledgeable and informative. I've done lots of tours and this is probably the best one I've done.
Valeska_P, Oct 2023
The tour guide was obviously a very knowledgeable and keen volcanologist who was very informative and dedicated to providing a good tour.
This would have been very good for half a day but this lasted for a whole day with the afternoon onwards to the coast following drop off of some to the blue lagoon and then picking them up afterwards. It felt a little like a fill in and was too much.
This tour should be half day if possible for the lava fields and optional for blue lagoon OR coastal tour in the afternoon to be made clear if you want a full day.
The guide was very interesting though and we welcomed his knowledge.
Not a good tour for kids. It isn’t entertaining enough for them for the day.
Response from Host, Oct 2023
Dear Valeska_P,
Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback about your recent experience on the Volcano Eruption Site & Reykjanes Geothermal Tour. We genuinely appreciate your input as it assists us in enhancing our tour offerings.
We're glad to hear that you found our guide knowledgeable and dedicated. Your commendation of their expertise and passion for the subject matter is genuinely appreciated.
It's important to clarify that the tour encompasses a combination of a volcano hike and the Reykjanes Geothermal area exploration. While we aim to offer a comprehensive experience, we understand and acknowledge your feedback regarding the tour's duration exceeding what you had anticipated. Additionally, we recognize the need for clarity and options for different tour lengths to cater to varying preferences.
To address this, we do offer a separate, shorter Volcano Hike Tour that focuses solely on the volcanic hike without additional activities or sightseeing. We'll ensure to communicate this distinction more clearly for our guests seeking a specific experience.
Regarding the tour's suitability for children and your insights on the optimal tour length and options, your feedback is incredibly valuable. We're committed to refining our tours to cater to the varied preferences of our guests and to ensure a more transparent and satisfying experience.
We apologize for any inconvenience caused and for not meeting your expectations. Your observations will significantly contribute to our efforts to offer more tailored and satisfying experiences for our guests in the future.

We were not pleased with this tour at all. Keep in mind when you book this tour, that they combine 2 different tours on the same bus, meaning that some people were going to the Blue Lagoon and the bus drives them all the way to and from the lagoon with the rest of the passengers on board. We lost quite a lot of time because of that. The stops are very rushed, the only stop where we had plenty of time was the lunch stop, apparently the tour company is in business with this restaurant as the tour guide kept advertising it all the way and gave people a whole hour to eat there while the majority of people brought their own food and just spent this hour sitting in the bus waiting. The guide does not maintain accountability of the guests, one time he almost left us at the stop and we had to run after the bus not to be left behind. On the lighthouse stop, we were only given 25 minutes, we are physically fit people and we walked very fast, but still did not have enough time to get even close to the lighthouse. On the way back to pick up people from Blue Lagoon, the guide rushed us from the bridge between Europe and North America because he wanted to get coffee at Blue Lagoon. He told us that he wanted to give us an opportunity to see the Blue Lagoon, which none of the guests were interested in, as this was not what we paid for. The actual volcano hike, which is the highlight of this trip, was cut short to account for these logistical mishaps. Overall, a very poor organization and time management, left us frustrated and disappointed. The volcano area itself is beautiful and unique, so definitely worth seeing, just not with this tour.

I wanted to see the 2021/22 eruption site at first, but I'm glad I booked this tour instead of just the volcano hike. The hike itself was shortened due to picking up wind, but all the other things we saw were incredibly beautiful. Josip was a well-informed and nice guide and I loved the musiic he played in the minibus :)
Kelly_B, Mar 2023
Had an amazing time! Loved the tour, was given enough time to explore, the guide was knowledgeable and gave an insight into how volcanos form and work. Was abit of a climb but the guide made sure to give everyone enough time to climb and was very encouraging. Would highly recommend! Was picked up and dropped off at my hotel and had lunch at a local restaurant nearby the volcanos.
Asmaa_T, Nov 2022
Very nice trip, our guide Thomas was very helpful and friendly. The trip was for 11 hours but we didn’t feel the time with him. Thanks to him to make this day unforgettable
John_C, Sep 2022
I’d recommend this trip only to friends who are physically fit and have stamina, as it’s around 11km with much of it being steep uphill. The lava and volcanoes, even though they are no longer erupting, are very impressive and the heat radiating from them can be felt from even tens of metres away.
Emily_K, Sep 2022
It was a great but challenging hike, along with many other cool sites to see! Unfortunately the volcano was no longer erupting, but we got to see the lava from the 2021 and 2022 eruptions.
Dionne_K, Mar 2022
I travelled with Tom in The Beast. Tom was an amazing guide, he was funny and knowledgeable and it was like hanging out with an eccentric Viking friend, and I know everyone wants that in their lives. The trip to the lava field was brilliant, it's a bit of a climb (uphill there and back) but I think the main difficulty was that we were calf-deep in snow most of the time. We stopped periodically to take pictures of the scenery, had a nice wander around some craters, it was a good time! The bus could have been a bit more comfortable, but honestly, that's just trying to find a negative. Lunch was incredible, too. Highly recommend!
