Volcano tour

Sandy_D, Jul 2025
A 3 hour round trip hike to get up close to the volcano that we could see magma bubbling from. The majority of the hike was on relatively flat ground but it was muddy and slippery and windy. The last few hundred metres was across recently laid lava which was quite difficult to walk across. Overall it was an amazing experience and made all the better by our guide Ottar. It was a tough walk though so you should definitely be aware of that.

Volcano hike

Great day out with perfect weather. The views were fantastic and our guide Peter was excellent and very knowledgeable. Tiring on the legs, but well worth the experience, you would never get anywhere else.

Awe Inspiring Volcano Hike

Awe inspiring trip to the volcanic site. It was good to walk out and experience the terrain. The trip also included a stop off at the coast and the tectonic plates. A great day out with knowledgeable guides.

Fascinating nature tour

Great trip

Benjamin_L, Nov 2024
Got to walk on lava, see the steam boring from the fields. Guide stopped off at multiple locations prior to the Lava hike which had fantastic views. Very enjoyable

A bit of a hike but well worth the effort

Jose_F, Nov 2024
My wife and I booked this tour many months prior to the actual tour hoping that the volcano would be active. Although it was not erupting, we were simply amazed by the site of the solidified lava flows and to be able to see it still steaming was most impressive. We took a lot of photos of this beautiful area, but there just isn't a photo that does the place justice. You have to experience the sights and sounds and with a really great tour guide like we had to truly appreciate the experience as a whole. I would recommend this to anyone who can appreciate the magnificence and power of nature.

Great hiking experience

APAC_C, Nov 2024
It was a good tour. Great experience. I enjoyed the scenery , insights about volcanos and the of the sites history. My only disappointment is that there were no available bathroom stops.

Response from Host, Nov 2024

Dear APAC_C, Thank you for your feedback! We’re glad to hear you enjoyed the breathtaking scenery and insights into Iceland’s volcanic history on this tour. Regarding restroom facilities, we understand that this can be a concern. The volcanic area is indeed quite remote, with no buildings or infrastructure nearby. However, we are actively looking for solutions to better accommodate our guests’ needs on this journey, including identifying potential stops along the route where facilities may be available. Thank you again for joining us, and we hope to welcome you on another Icelandic adventure soon! Warm regards, Andrius

Great hike but no lava

Allison_R, Oct 2024
I am an avid hiker so I really enjoyed this excursion. The volcano still has some heat present with steam but we were not able to get close enough to see any lava at the surface if that is what you want to see you would need to book shortly after an eruption

great experience

Kausha_S, Oct 2024
Our Tour Guide Tom was very well-informed about volcanos and even made a detour to take us to Grindavik. very scenic trip.

Spectacular volcano hike w/ a great guide

Kim_n, Sep 2024

Unique Hike

Heather_W, Jun 2024
Rare opportunity to hike this unique landscape. The hike has some steep inclines for flatlanders but is doable. It was a long and informative day. Recommend you pack a lunch and dress in layers. It was cold and rainy the day we hiked and I wish I had dressed warmer.

Very good!

Stephanie_G, May 2024
We had a great guide! Very knowledgeable & showed us plenty of stops along the penisula . Tour included pick up & drop off ! We had a great time

Amazing day!

Katherine_W, May 2024
What a great day! The volcanic areas are fascinating and our guide, Sara, was knowledgeable and fun. A few cautions: There is more uphill hiking than I expected. There are no stops that include food so pack snacks and water. Bathrooms are limited. It’s all fine, just good to be prepared.

Fantastic Afternoon

Melanie_A, Mar 2024
Tour guide was friendly, informative and great (if I remember right his name was Karon? Sorry if that’s wrong I am terrible with names). The tour was great seen lava from 2021 and also from the more recent activity. It’s hilly and rough terrain so my advise would be to be prepared with correct gear. We were lucky to have clear blue skies and no wind and the view from the top was awesome. Take water and snacks.

Must be in good shape

Linda_S, Aug 2023
We scheduled a pickup at the artic comfort hotel. THIS IS NOT A HOTEL, IT IS Refuge center. It was very uncomfortable. It should not be a pick up. You should note that it was a 4 mile hike to the volcano and 4 mile back to the bus. My husband is 67 and I am 65. It was a warm day. We made it but it was difficult.

The guide, an Irish guy, was not really interested. He never even stopped in the long hike halfway through. He seemed more bothered to be back home early.

An active volcano? Go!

Mike_A, Jul 2023
Excellent tour with safety prioritized. It is a long hike so prepare for a long day. Our guide, I forgot her name, but she was positive, enthusiastic and happy to share her knowledge of Iceland. I mean, it’s an erupting volcano in an absolutely beautiful county! Props to the bus driver as well!

Amazing experience!

Renee_P, Jul 2023
It was a long hike, but definitely worth every minute of it! See the volcano was epic, and a once in a lifetime experience to see the newest volcano on Iceland being born.

Fantastic tour given by my HBO. Great way to see the volcanic side of Iceland. The hike was steep but not too arduous for us, worth the climb even if we didn’t have great visibility. HBO was super informative and friendly, with great insights into Iceland. We particularly enjoyed the Icelandic music to accompany the trip! Thanks!!

Iceland Funn!

Mary_O, Dec 2022
It was definitely a challenge but so worth it. Our guy was wonderful and so accommodating with all of us. Great trip!
