Overview
Naples can throw the most careful plans out of whack with anarchic traffic, heat, and crowds. With this skip-the-line guided tour, bypass the often-long ticket lines and break from the drama by going underground, some 130 feet (40 meters) below the city’s historic center. Tour subterranean air-raid shelters, Greek-Roman aqueducts, caves, a garden, and a Roman theater—it’s all part of Naples’ unconventional history.
- Avoid lingering in the heat for a ticket with a skip-the-line tour
- See a different side of Naples, and hear its history from a guide
- Enter the theater through Emperor Nero’s former dressing room
- Upgrade your tour, and finish on a high note with Neapolitan pizza

I was one of about 30 people on the tour. The guide was very personable and knowledgeable, and he made the tour entertaining with interesting stories and a bit of humor. Physically, this could be a challenge for some folks, as you must traverse lot of stairs to descend 40 meters underground to see 2000 year old chambers and tunnels. When hot outside, this was a great escape to the cool underground, but you get to come back up to see the last part of the tour, which includes the excavated portions of a large Roman amphitheater.

Worth going to, fairly well organised and tours guides know their subject. A bit difficult to hear them when two tours going on but still definitely worthwhile.
Christine_M, Jul 2026
The tour itself was pretty interesting. The bad thing was that they allowed our group to have 50 people which was in my opinion too many.
Andrew_Y, Jun 2026
Great experience and a very knowledgeable guide but didn’t realise when I booked it that we would only be spending 45 of the 90 minutes underground so a bit disappointed also did feel a bit rushed at times with other groups around also dosing the tour.

This tour was perfect for the hot afternoons of Italy as you travel underground to see former aquaducts turned air-raid shelters during WWII. It does involve a LOT of stairs and the tour group was huge. It was difficult to hear the tour guide as there were no audio sets offered for during the tour and our guide skipped over any questions that were asked during the tour. Thravelling through the narrow passegeways of the aqueducts was optional if you are claustrophobic. You also go see the remnants of a Roman theater that was discovered underneath modern apartments--which was a surprise.

This was an excellent tour and one of the highlights of our trip to Naples. Our guide was both knowledgeable and entertaining, making the experience informative and enjoyable from start to finish.
We chose the full experience, including the very narrow underground water tunnel, which was exciting and added a real sense of adventure to the tour.
If you're visiting Naples, we would definitely recommend adding this tour to your itinerary. It's a fascinating way to learn about the city's history and see a completely different side of Naples.

Very educational and interesting. The negative reviews here are overstated. Yes, if you are morbidly obese or 6'8" or taller, you probably should not do this. Guide was very knowledgeable and communicated very well.
Josh_C, Jun 2026
So interesting to know how far the tunnels go and all their uses! It’s a must do tour whilst in Naples

Very cool to see the underground water system and survival of war. Expected to see more than tunnels. Was hoping to see more of city ruins.

The Naples Underground Official Skip-the-Line Tour was one of the most fascinating experiences of our trip to Naples. Being able to skip the long lines was definitely worth it and made the experience much smoother and more enjoyable.
The underground tunnels and chambers were incredible to see, and learning about the history beneath the city gave us a completely different perspective on Naples. The guide was knowledgeable and explained how the underground areas were used throughout different periods of history, from ancient Greek and Roman times to World War II shelters.
The tour was well organized, interesting, and unlike anything we have experienced before. Some of the passageways are narrow, but that added to the adventure and authenticity of the experience. We would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Naples who enjoys history and wants to see a unique side of the city.

Well worth an hour of your time. Not suitable for people who don’t like steps or small spaces. We learned an awful lot about the water systems in Naples - unbelievable that the Roman stucco still provides protection to this day.
Abigail_K, May 2026
Lots of stairs, so be ready. Knowledgable guide, had great answers to questions and made sure everyone was comfortable. Cool locations, well planned.
Testarosa64, May 2026
Guide was very knowledgeable, funny and the history of the tunnel was amazing. Highly recommend this tour.

Diane_f, Apr 2026
Brilliant experience though maybe not for the clostrophobic as some parts are very narrow you do have option of passing on those bits though but they are well worth the squeeze to see yhe viaduct our guide was very knowledgeable and funny at times after the tunnels you go into naples to look at afew buildings close bye well worth the visit

Very nice experience with a very well-informed guide (Ivan)! A special activity which you don’t find elsewhere.
Joanna_D, Mar 2026
This activity was just alright. The tour group was massive which made it hard to hear the guide at some points. The underground neat but I thought we’d get to see more. My advice for the next visitor would be to do research on which underground tour to attend because there are different entrances.

This experience exceeded my expectations! The tour under Naples was very educational and the added bonus of exploring where an old theatre used to be added to this. Our guide was very knowledgeable and eager to answer any questions.

Your tour guide will make or break this experience, unfortunately, our tour guide broke it. Four years ago I took this tour and it was AMAZING! The tour guide stopped in every room to tell you about the history, point out interesting items, and tell great stories with a sense of humor that made the experience all come together. It was so great that when I had the opportunity to bring my family to Naples the tour was at the top of the list. The tour now is such a horrible disappointment and such a waste of time and money. The guide spoke very briefly at the beginning, very briefly in the middle, and once in the Roman amphitheater. He would stop in rooms to make sure everyone was together but otherwise say nothing. He would just mumble through an answer to a question that came up along the way. It was awful. There is a place in the amphitheater that you can easily step up and see the “new” apartment built right over the old, he never even pointed it out. Most in the tour never even saw it, he just moved on. He did not give any history as to why they stopped using the water system or when. The WW2 history is just barely mentioned. It felt like before this tour had licensed, (and as part of the license) well educated tour guides. Now they just have hourly employees paid to walk large crowds of tourists through underground spaces. Another couple we met on the tour also said their friend had taken the tour before and it was a “must do!” This tour walks the same steps, sort of, but sadly it is no longer the same tour. Save your money and try somewhere else.

Very worthwhile and interesting tour. Definitely should be included with any trip to Naples. The history is fascinating and the engineering is a marvel, from ancient times through WWII.
Ron_M, Jan 2026
I quite enjoyed this tour of underground Naples covering its Greek era cisterns and buried the Roman temple. Note that there are a lot of steps, dark passages, and times where you need to walk on your side. Not for the claustrophobic.

Great way to spend time while in Naples. Fascinating experience, great guide. Highly recommend unless you’re claustrophobic!
Angela_B, Nov 2025
It was fascinating to see a whole underground world and guide was good giving information it was excellent
Michael_U, Nov 2025
This was a very interesting tour. Don't worry if you have claustrofobia as you can skip the narrow section although it is quite safe anyway.
Jean_M, Oct 2025
The guide took just the right amount of time and was very clear with just the right amount of historical fact and background. She warned us of passages that might be uncomfortable with instructions on how to exit if necessary. VERY enjoyable to hear both the ancient history of Naples as well as the underground’s place during world war II.
Memorie_N, Oct 2025
Overall, the experience was a bit underwhelming. The tickets were definitely not "skip the line"--they just mean you don't have to buy a ticket there. We still had to stand in a line for about 20-30 minutes, and the staff at the front managing questions and the lines were not friendly.
The groups they put you in are also quite large, so sometimes it was difficult to hear and see. Our tour was in English, and although our tour guide was very knowledgeable and did speak English, her accent was very thick so I could not understand some of what she was saying--although if we had been in a smaller group, this may have helped with understanding her.
Jessica_C, Oct 2025
Amazing to see what Naples history lies beneath the surface…Our guide was so informative and professional…Definitely recommend!
WilliamDouglas_H, Oct 2025
Total confusion starting with the smart mouth guides in front of the entrance. Groups are too big for the tour and can’t understand a word due to guide’s acent
Julie_M, Oct 2025
Very cool experience. The narrow tunnels really are narrow and you truly do need to use your phone flashlight. No joke!
Shelton, Sep 2025
Very enjoyable tour around a section of the accessible underground tunnels with some interesting historical facts and an amusing tour guide. Also an extra bonus was seeing a more recent find of a Roman theatre.
