The tour was absolutely brilliant and incredibly informative. The guide - Lewis - commanded the group and was an excellent source of knowledge. He added humour and passion to Berlin’s dark history, making this one of the best tourist experiences we’ve ever encountered. We would highly recommend this for anyone visiting the city as it gives a great grounding for further exploration and reading.

This is a wonderful way to see Berlin. Beny, our tour guide, was very knowledgeable and fun. There were lots of stops and great insight into the life and history of Berlin. We even stopped for light refreshments to get out of the snow. I recommend getting a cup of gluwein to keep you warm! Book this tour! You won’t regret it!! Ask for Beny!!

Itinerary

Take a walk back in time as you explore the many layers of history found in Berlin, covering everything from its Prussian period, to its violent 20th century and the present period of rebirth. History fans and those interested in the remarkable renaissance of Berlin’s urban center will enjoy this insightful, half-day trip past the city’s key monuments.

Start your day at Neue Promenade 3 where you'll meet your guide. Listen to an introductory overview of the strange, winding history of Berlin, covering the city’s founding and continuing with stories about the turbulent years of war and modern era as the tour moves forward. Walk down Berlin’s Unter den Linden boulevard, a thoroughfare that links Stadtschloss royal palace with Pariser Platz and Brandenburg Gate. By the 19th century, this elegant street was among the most famous in the city, growing even more grand as Berlin’s boundaries pushed further west.

Head next to Museum Island, pausing at the Berlin State Library (once the workplace of Albert Einstein) and the Neue Wache memorial as you continue. Travel beneath the monumental Brandenburg Gate, which forms the beginning of Unter den Linden, and check out the Reichstag, home of Germany’s parliament, just nearby. Then explore Pariser Platz, the location of Hitler’s bunker and the Holocaust Memorial, commemorating the many Jews that lost their lives during the Nazi regime.

Trace the path of the “death strip” to Checkpoint Charlie, the infamous crossing point for those traveling between East and West Berlin, and visit Bebelplatz, the location of an infamous 1933 book burning by the Nazis. You’ll then have time the stroll along the Berlin Wall, demarcating the boundary between East and West during the Cold War, and hear details about its triumphant downfall in 1989.

Take a moment to stop at the Topography of Terror Museum, situated at the former Gestapo and SS Headquarters. Hear from your guide about the significance of the museum’s location, which the city’s leaders consciously chose to help confront and reconcile the awful moments of Berlin’s past. Look down into the building’s excavated cellars, a haunting spot where political prisoners were once tortured and killed.

Tour with Steve

Bailey_M, Apr 2026
Fabulous tour! Really enlightening. From Prussian History, WW II history, the Jewish memorial, to the division of Germany and Berlin. The wall which actually encircled West Berlin to the fall of the wall in 1989. A complete overview told brilliantly. It opened my eyes! I love being able to see from a different point of view. And I decided I really liked Berlin and Berliners. They have come through a lot of hardship over the last 100 or so years! Thoroughly recommended. Thanks Steve…the young man from Ireland! 😀

First visit to Berlin

Diane_R, Apr 2026
We met Jake at the designated spot. He was very friendly and we felt assured that we were in good hands. He started right off with Berlin’s humble beginnings and then we took off walking in the shoes of all who lived in this beautiful city. Jake was very knowledgeable and described how the city became what it is and how it changed over the years. At every stop we learned of the historic event that happened there. The walking was very easy and we had a convenient break at a cafe before it ended. While walking we met other travelers in our group from all over the world. We highly recommend this walking tour.

Quincy was a great tour guide and very in depth. Lucky for us he has a master's in history, and when asked where he studied, he pointed to the Humboldt University of Berlin, which we were standing right across from. Great sites, great information, and he was able to answer most of our questions. At the end of the tour, he provided us with recommendations for different cuisines to try as well as other activities to do, and sites to see. I highly recommend.
