Our tour guide Rebecca was very knowledgeable and extremely respectful of the things that occurred there. She was helpful in getting our train tickets squared away and getting us on the right train after the tour and willing to make recommendations if desired. A great representative of Viator who had great interactions with all in the group. The best tour I’ve ever taken thanks to Rebecca!!!

This was a must do for both of us, the Guide was fantastic, excellent knowledge and ability to communicate what matters. The site was good to give a good understanding of what was committed there. There are enough original and reconstructed infrastructure. Travel to and from was easy, the walk from the station to the comp is relevant.

Overview

Discover Sachsenhausen, one of the first concentration camps established by Nazi Germany’s Third Reich, on this guided trip from Berlin by train—eliminating the need for a rental car. Listen as an expert historian details in English the facts surrounding the camp’s creation, as well as a timeline of the atrocities that took place there. Today, the site serves as a national memorial to the prisoners who lived and died here, and on your visit, explore the various locations inside the camp, like the command headquarters and execution trench, and learn about Germany during the rule of the Third Reich.
  • Explore the camp with an expert historian as your guide
  • Visit sites such as the punishment cells and gas chambers

Itinerary

Begin your tour with a guide meet and greet at Friedrichstrasse train station. Ride to the Sachsenhausen Memorial and Museum in Oranienburg.

More than 200,000 people were imprisoned in Sachsenhausen between 1936 and 1945. At first, the prisoners were primarily political opponents of the Nazi regime. However, people that were defined by the National Socialists as racially or biologically inferior were later included.

By 1939, there were a large number of citizens from the occupied European states imprisoned here. Tens of thousands of people died of starvation, disease, forced labor and mistreatment, or they were victims of the systematic extermination by the Schutzstaffel, or the SS. Thousands of other prisoners died during the “death marches” that followed the evacuation of the camp in April of 1945. At that time, approximately 3,000 sick prisoners, along with the doctors and nurses who had stayed behind in the camp, were freed by Soviet and Polish soldiers.

This tour features a visit to the punishment cells, gallows, gas chambers and burial pits located inside the prison. Hear stories of prisoner bravery as well as the chilling atrocities that took place at the camp, which now serves as a national memorial to the prisoners who lived and died here. Your tour ends with a return train trip to Berlin.

Best tour yet made so by our excellent guide, Will. He was very well informed. He was good at explaining the things we were seeing without being condescending.

Long but good day

Kate_C, Apr 2026
Good tour for those of moderate physical abilities. Be warned that it is a long day and you MUST bring your own food and water. I wish this was more obvious in the tour listing. There is no opportunity to buy either during the entire duration of the tour. While the listing says food isn't provided, I had no idea that there wasn't even an opportunity to buy a bottle of water ANYWHERE along the trip. Some people forgot to bring water and were quite dehydrated by the end. The meeting point was easy to find, and the guide was helpful in buying train tickets. The guide, Nickoli, gave some information on the platform before boarding the train. Be warned that the walk to Sachsenhausen takes 25 mins. There is no cab or bus option to get there quickly, so this tour is not suited for those with limited mobility. Additionally, there are almost no opportunities to sit down at the camp, so you will be out in the sun for the whole 4 hours you are at the camp. Once there, Nickoli gave very thoughtful yet respectful information about the camp and those who were kept there. I do wish we could spend more time in the camp's exhibits. There were two that contained a bunch of information that I could barely get a glimpse of. However, the majority of the time was well allocated with bathroom breaks at the beginning and the end.

Lot’s of walking but so much to see to learn about this dark time in history. Gives a good overview but if you want to experience more you would need more time to see all the displays and read everything.

Sachenhausen tour

Anne_W, Apr 2026
Very informative. Be prepared for a fairly long walk to and from the train station. All part of the experience but can be tiring on a hot day. Tour gives a lot of information but can feel quite rushed at times which is necessary to get through everything. Stay behind afterwards if you want to go back and read up on more information. Nickolai was a very personable guide. Very informative and made it very interesting. It was our second tour with him, he had led our walking tour on a previous visit and we were very happy to see him again.

Highly recommend, we learned a lot

Jenn_D, Apr 2026
Jaime G did a phenomenal job with this tour. My husband and I really learned a lot. Jaime was extremely knowledgeable about German history and explained the history of the camp in a way that was easy to follow. We got a lot out of this tour, and would highly recommend it. It is a long-ish day with a lot of walking. Bring some lunch, there isn’t a lot available once you hit the road.

Amazing trip

Debbie_O, Apr 2026
We visited Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp today, and it was an incredibly powerful and moving experience. Our guide, Mikey, was outstanding from start to finish—extremely knowledgeable, engaging, and respectful of the site’s history. He provided deep insights that really brought the stories and significance of the camp to life. Despite the heavy subject matter, the tour was thoughtfully delivered and truly worthwhile. We came away having learned a great deal and with a much deeper understanding of this important place in history. Overall, it was a meaningful and impactful visit—definitely a 10/10 experience. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting the area

Ripoff,don't waste your time

RHODE_G, Apr 2026
Wasting time and money. You have to walk 40 minutes after you get off the train, ride train is about 55 minutes. Same coming back. You will only see a room with some bunk beds, toilets. The last part of tour, you don't see nothing, just some foundation were they used to cremate bodies. Don't waste your money and time. That place is a ripoff!!!

Response from Host, Apr 2026

Dear RHODE_G, It’s honestly difficult to understand how you could come away from a place like this and describe it in those terms. This isn’t a theme park, and it’s not designed to “entertain” or impress in the way typical tourist attractions do. It is a preserved historical site — a place where thousands of people suffered and died — and the experience is meant to be reflective, not convenient or exciting. Focusing on the length of the train ride or the walk misses the point entirely. The physical journey is minor compared to the historical weight of what you are there to witness. What remains — the barracks, the sparse interiors, the foundations where crematoria once stood — may seem minimal, but that absence is itself part of the story. Much was destroyed, but what is left still carries immense significance. Calling it a “ripoff” suggests an expectation that the visit should deliver some kind of spectacle or visible scale of horror. That expectation is misplaced. The purpose of visiting is to understand, to remember, and to reflect on one of the darkest chapters in human history — not to be entertained or satisfied in a conventional sense. Places like this require a different mindset. They ask for respect, patience, and a willingness to engage with history, even when what you see is quiet, incomplete, or uncomfortable. Reducing that experience to complaints about logistics or perceived value comes across as deeply dismissive of the reality of what happened there and the memory of those who endured it. Sachsenhaus Walking Tour

Graham_H, Mar 2026
Our guide Raffaello was very knowledgeable and gave a lot of insight and consideration to the information imparted. Remember to buy your train ticket to Oranienburg before meeting your tour guide, whilst you are at it pickup a lunch and snacks from the station, there will be nowhere to stop once in Sachsenhaus. Once you arrive at Oranienburg you will be walking for approximately 4 hours until you arrive back to the train. If you have difficulties standing or walking for long periods this may not be a tour for you. A very emotional and thought provoking tour definitely worthwhile. Remember to bring some currency for a tip in recognition of the hard work and research you guide puts in to your experience, these guides go beyond telling you about where you are visiting they bring passion and knowledge, gained through research and education.

A Fascinating, Sobering Tour Through History

Zac_J, Mar 2026
I almost decided against going on this tour, but I'm glad I went. Of course the subject matter of this tour is very serious, and when most people are on vacation they aren't looking to do things so emotionally heavy, but I would recommend this tour. My tour guide was Ronja, who was an excellent guide. We met as a group of around 17 people outside the train station. After covering some basic info, including having Ronja take stock of who had train tickets and who needed to get one in the station, we headed to the platform. She helped those without tickets in purchasing one, then we boarded the train to the station nearest the camp. After arriving, Ronja made sure everyone made it off the train and re-grouped before walking around 10-15 minutes through town to the site. She allowed some time for a bathroom break, before beginning the tour. The tour itself was very matter of fact. The subject matter is sad enough on its own, so I appreciated the straightforward telling of the history of the place. History about Sachsenhausen was interwoven with information about other locations, as well as a recounting about how the camp came about, how it existed during WWII, as well as what happened there afterwards. It was very fascinating to see, despite being so tragic. Again, Ronja was a fantastic guide, as she was not only very informative during the tour, but also friendly and helpful. She was open to every question, and actually said she enjoyed the very few questions she didn't have an answer for, as it gave her a reason to look something up. Sometimes she even looked some of the questions up on the spot on her phone during some downtime, though she was also open to admitting that she didn't have all the answers to such a vast topic. Also, as mentioned a bit before, she was very helpful with the transit, such as after the group arrived back in Berlin, she was helping point people to their best train options so they could get where they needed to go. Although Sachsenhausen doesn't have the name recognition as some of the other camps, I highly recommend both visiting and this tour specifically. As Ronja mentioned at the end of the tour, it is important to visit these locations and keep the memory of this part of history alive.

Response from Host, Mar 2026

Thank you for your kind words. We’re delighted that the tour was such an enjoyable part of your visit to Berlin. Safe travels Insider Tour
