Itinerary
Begin your tour with a guide meet and greet at Friedrichstrasse train station. Ride to the Sachsenhausen Memorial and Museum in Oranienburg.
More than 200,000 people were imprisoned in Sachsenhausen between 1936 and 1945. At first, the prisoners were primarily political opponents of the Nazi regime. However, people that were defined by the National Socialists as racially or biologically inferior were later included.
By 1939, there were a large number of citizens from the occupied European states imprisoned here. Tens of thousands of people died of starvation, disease, forced labor and mistreatment, or they were victims of the systematic extermination by the Schutzstaffel, or the SS. Thousands of other prisoners died during the “death marches” that followed the evacuation of the camp in April of 1945. At that time, approximately 3,000 sick prisoners, along with the doctors and nurses who had stayed behind in the camp, were freed by Soviet and Polish soldiers.
This tour features a visit to the punishment cells, gallows, gas chambers and burial pits located inside the prison. Hear stories of prisoner bravery as well as the chilling atrocities that took place at the camp, which now serves as a national memorial to the prisoners who lived and died here. Your tour ends with a return train trip to Berlin.

We had a fabulous day and our tour guide Paul from Insider Tours Berlin was amazing. He had everything timed perfectly and gave such knowledge and interesting information along the way. Guided us through the campsite which was great. Would highly recommend it when visiting Berlin.
Thanks Paul we had a great day and will remember our visit to Sanchenhausen for a long time.
Take care

Overall train trip to see the concentration camp - keep in mind the timeframe ends up being 5 hours plus. Also, need to buy a train ticket in advance & note, must be an A/B/C ticket. Next can't assume public transport is going to be on time or worse in our case, cancel hence having to change to entirely different train and arrival location. Next, walk to / from camp from train station is another 20 minutes plus tour, a lot of walking.

This was a thought-provoking, sensitively presented tour involving some dark aspects of history. The guide, Joseph, was excellent. I left knowing considerably more about this part of European and human history than when I arrived.

Mikhail was an incredibly thoughtful and knowledgeable tour leader. Our tour was on a very grey and drizzly day and Mikhail purchased umbrellas and lent them to people who was unprepared. A very thought provoking place to visit which was not always comfortable but Mikhail handled it with compassion whist imparting his knowledge to us. Would thoroughly recommend.

Sachsenhausen is a unique camp in that it was one of the first and more of an experimental camp. It’s not a “Death Camp”, but was a camp where various techniques for imprisonment and torture were first tried. Most of the camp is gone- torn apart by people desperate for woods after WWII, so many of the buildings are not “original”.
However, it is a camp that still leaves an impact and delivers the message of man’s inhumanity to man. That message is furthered by not only the detailed exhibits, but a knowledgeable tour guide.
My tour guide was Will (or William) a well spoken and intelligent guide who took us throughout the camp and provided us with information and stories. There were times that I felt rushed through the exhibits, but then I realized that Will’s presentations covered most of what was in the barracks or the kitchen. I would have liked a bit more time in the kitchen exhibition, however.
BE PREPARED TO WALK!! The bus tour was booked so I took the tour where I took the train to the closest town then walked to the camp. It’s about a 20-30 minute walk, taking the same path as the prisoners. Then you get to the camp and walk another three hours, with several stops to listen to guide or check out the exhibits. There were three bathroom breaks during the tour. Then there is the 20-30 walk back to the train.
Will the guide, was with the group the whole way, keeping a brisk pace. He escorts the group back to the meeting train station as well.
There are no food stops on the tour, so be sure to bring your own “on the go food”: sandwich wraps, protein bars, bananas etc…Tour attendees will also need an ABC zone ticket to get to the last stop on the line- Oranienburg (the most dangerous city in Germany…due to unexploded bombs from WWII. It is actually a lovely town).
I got home around 4:30. This tour takes the whole day. There is a lot of information to process (particularly if you have a quality tour guide) and a lot of walking required.

Very knowledgeable guide, but as long as you are of good fitness and a speedy walker so you can keep up with the guide on a mission. My wife had several blisters at the end of the day. There was no down time unless you wanted to stay behind on your own after the trip and make your own way back to the train station. Very rushed at every point of interest.
Response from Host, Jul 2026
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback, and we're pleased to hear you found your guide knowledgeable.
Sachsenhausen is an extensive memorial site covering a very large area, and our guides have a limited amount of time to present its history while ensuring the group returns to Berlin on schedule. We appreciate that the pace may have felt too fast for some guests, and we're sorry to hear your wife experienced discomfort during the visit.
Your comments are valuable, and we'll discuss them with our guiding team to see where we can better balance the pace of the tour while still covering the site's most important locations and stories. Thank you again for your feedback, and we hope you otherwise found the visit to be a meaningful and educational experience.

Our guide had so much to share, and we were still bustling from spot to spot. Only a 45min train ride from Berlin, but outside the A zone, so make sure to have your extension ready to go before meeting the guides - we spent a lot of time waiting for our guide to help other participants. For the record, a 4hr tour is more than enough for the heart to take, but will only scratch the surface of what's there. But, after you do this visit, you could come back another time to see what you missed. Our tour guide answered every question, and was super friendly.

Jorgen, our tour guide was incredible. Very knowledgeable and took care of each person in our group. Some tour guides play favorites and you could tell he worked hard to engage each participant. I took a star down because we didn’t have much time at each exhibit to really experience parts of the memorial. It felt rushed. On the flip side of that, it was a long tour, so much to see, so I do understand the pace. buyer beware, if you go on a Sunday there is no bus from the train station to the memorial so add a 15-20 walk on each side of the tour. We did 14,000 steps. As for this memorial, it is interesting, and certainly historical. But also was created in Soviet Germany. It’s very different than other work camps I have toured. I had never heard of this place, I was very interested in its historical significance.

Nickolai was a wonderful guide. He spoke from extensive knowledge and respect about the subjects of the tour: the Nazis and the Sachsenhausen concentration camp. He leavened this history with touches of emotion and brief but touching individual stories. He moved the lengthy tour along quickly and efficiently, while being unfailingly courteous to slower walkers.

Ariel was a great guide. He is very knowledgeable and has a pleasant personality. He helped my family get our ABC card at the train station. The group size was manageable around 20. Our tour of the town and camp was just long enough for me but some other guests looked rather tired at the end. I have a pretty good knowledge of WWII history and still learned a lot on this tour.

Emma was an awesome guide for our full day at Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp. From the very start Emma was a strong, clear, super effective and organized guide who was exceptionally knowledgeable. She met us earlier than the appointed time to help us all get together and make sure we were all here as well as answer questions. There were some people in our large group (and I was one of them) who did not have a train ticket, so she helped us get buy them and assisted everybody in getting them validated. Once we arrived at the camp, she guided us on an excellent tour. Emma was uncommonly knowledgeable and provided us with great information prior to starting the long, walking tour as well as at each stop. While it was a slightly chilly, modestly windy day with a few mild sprinkles, Emma's energy and enthusiasm never flagged. Honestly, I learned a great deal visiting Sachsenhausen. I think it is extremely important for people to visit the concentration camps. Unfortunately, there are still people who insist this "did not happen" or it "was exaggerated." As fewer and fewer survivors are around to give person-to-person accounts of their experiences and this atrocity, it is increasingly important to preserve these camps and guide people through them. Anybody who says it can not happen again is not paying attention to current world events. Sachsenhausen is my fourth concentration camp and while it may not quite "pack the punch" that Auschwitz did, it certainly made an impact and is essential viewing for anybody seriously interested in WWII, Jewish history, our world's current political state, or humanity.

We had Irish Paul as our tour guide to Sachsenhausen and we wouldn’t have had it any other way. Paul approached this historically and emotionally-complex topic with a laudable balance of fact and feeling - delivering a depth of knowledge in a manner which demonstrated clear empathy for, not only the groups affected in that time period, but also those who continue to be affected by similar regimes to this very day.
he also gave us some great local pastry and bar recs! cheers paul for expanding our minds and our palettes!

The tour of the town and camp is interesting and moving. Our guide, Rohan, was very knowledgeable and pleasant. Be prepared for a LOT of walking. The day was hot, so that didn't help the walk. I still highly recommend the tour. A great amount of history shared.

I am so glad I booked a tour instead of doing this on my own. Our tour guide, Ariel, l was incredibly knowledgeable and brought insight to the history of the camp that was invaluable. I enjoyed that the tour gave us time to look through the exhibits, but also our guide pointed out the important pieces that could easily get lost in the fold of a large complex. The guide was also kind and willing to answer any and all questions we had. I would definitely recommend this tour to others wanting to visit.
