Kenny was a phenomenal guide. We booked this last minute and had a great time. Bring a coat and scarf, it can get chilly on the water. Our guide was knowledgeable and funny, kept our attention. We grabbed a hot alcoholic drink down at the bar which was very tasty. 10/10, choose Wendell’s company for your cruise and pray you get Kenny!

Efficient and fun way to learn about Chicago history and architecture

Kelly_D, May 2026
Great way to learn so much about Chicago with amazing narrative and views!! Took 10 family members in this trio and they all loved it. Super knowledgeable guide was easy to hear and understand even on open deck if the boat. Bathroom and no host bar are the icing on the cake!

Bobby did an amazing job...

Walker_W, May 2026
Bobby did an amazing job talking about Chicago and dozens of buildings along the river! This is something everyone should do in Chicago at least once.

Very disappointing...

Angelia_R, May 2026
Very disappointing experience. Everyone pays the same price for this boat tour, but the seating is definitely not equal when it comes to the view. Our tour was scheduled for 11:00 AM, and we arrived and got in line by 10:30. By the time we boarded, every seat on the top deck was already taken. We were stuck on the bottom level, where you can only see from one side of the boat. To actually see the height and beauty of the buildings, you have to stand for the entire tour. If you book this tour, make sure you arrive at least an hour early if you want any chance at decent seating. That information should really be communicated better in advance.

Architecture on the river

Really-a school field trip!!!

Gregg_M, May 2026
They booked our group of 4 adults with a third grade and a fourth grade class field trip. The kids were SOOO loud we couldn’t hear the docent describe the buildings! I’ve asked for a refund but have yet to receive a response from Viator.

Chicago River 90-Minute Architecture Tour – A Must-Do Experience in the Windy City

WILLIAM_B, May 2026
If you’re visiting Chicago, the Chicago River 90-Minute Architecture Tour is absolutely worth adding to your list. At first, 90 minutes sounded like it might be a long ride, but honestly, the time flew by. Our tour guide was outstanding—very knowledgeable, sharp, and naturally comical, which kept the entire experience engaging from start to finish. You could tell he was genuinely passionate about Chicago’s history and took pride in making sure everyone actually learned something about the iconic towers, architecture, and stories behind the skyline. One thing I really appreciated was that this wasn’t just someone talking at you the whole time. At the end, he turned it into a fun game show-style “check on learning,” which made the experience interactive and memorable. Nice touch. They also gave us opportunities to pause, take some incredible skyline photos, and enjoy the views without feeling rushed. Bonus points for having access to refreshments downstairs at the bar—because a good tour with a drink option? That’s a win. Bottom line: great experience, educational without being boring, and perfect whether you’re a first-time visitor or just want to see Chicago from a different angle. Highly recommend.

Best local knowledge in architecture

Claudia_N, May 2026
Great tour guide. She was a wealth of knowledge. 47 years of experience. Service was good. Was a bit hot. Sunscreen and sun over a must.

Can't See!

Clark_M, May 2026
Tour was oversold. No room to sit on top deck. 50 - 80 people had to sit on lower deck. You could not see anything the guide was talking about. Moved to the front and could see some, but we stood for all 90 minutes.

The tour is worthwhile....

CherylandEric_C, May 2026

Great tour! Lots of information with a touch of humor. 90 minutes goes by quickly. Perfect for a hot day.

Do not recommend

Andrea_K, May 2026
This tour was very disappointing. There were not enough seats for everyone, and on the lower deck it was difficult to hear the announcer clearly. On top of that, the announcer made inappropriate/unfunny jokes and laughed loudly at his own jokes, which made the experience uncomfortable rather than enjoyable. We also couldn’t help but wonder what he was drinking from his cup during the tour. Overall, it felt unprofessional and poorly organized. I would not recommend this tour.
