1 Day in Dallas for First Timers

Curated by Kate Lowetha writer who loves learning about Dallas history.

When I brought my history-loving kids to Dallas for the first time, we dove deep into John F. Kennedy's history and visited the museum to learn about his life and assassination. Subsequent visits have allowed us to explore even more of the city, with the Perot Museum of Nature and Science becoming our new favorite. With one day in Dallas, you can spend some time exploring the art, music, and brewery scene in Deep Ellum, and you'll still have some time for a museum or two. Here's how to do it.

If you only have time for one thing, make it a stop in Deep Ellum for a food crawl.

Summers in Dallas are hot and muggy, and winters can be cold and windy.

Morning

Start early if you want to take in as many Dallas sites as possible. Focus on John F. Kennedy's history by visiting Memorial Plaza and then swing by Dealey Plaza and the museum nearby to learn about the former president's life and assassination. See the massive bronze sculpture in Pioneer Plaza memorializing the area's cattle-drive history, and then wrap up your morning with a stop at Dallas' Giant Eyeball sculpture (because, why not?).

Afternoon

An afternoon in Deep Ellum is required to see all that Dallas has to offer. The neighborhood is the musical and artistic hub of the city, where you can enjoy live music performances and tons of colorful street art. Visit one of the many breweries in the area, like Deep Ellum Brewing Company, and shop the boutiques for vintage treasures.

Night

Deep Ellum has some pretty hopping nightlife, but if you want to see the city lit up, head to Reunion Tower. Its indoor/outdoor observation deck will give you 360-degree views of the cityscape, and you can dine at Crown Block if you'd like to enjoy a steak and a whiskey old-fashioned with the city lights in the background. It's the perfect way to end your visit to the "Big D."
