Spanning the Tagus River (Rio Tejo) at its narrowest point, the soaring 5th of April Bridge (Ponte 25 de Abril) is one of Lisbon’s most recognizable landmarks. Housed within one of the bridge’s pillars, the Pillar 7 Bridge Experience offers visitors a unique perspective on the bridge, complete with an all-glass viewing point and immersive experiences.

A peaceful escape from some of Sintra’s busier landmarks, the Chalet of the Countess d’Edla is an Alpine-style 19th-century retreat on the forested grounds of Pena Park, not far from the UNESCO World Heritage site of Pena National Palace. Visitors to the building can learn about its namesake, the Countess of Edla, while admiring the ornate interiors and beautiful gardens.

Set within the complex for the 1998 World Expo in Lisbon, the Vasco da Gama Shopping Center is one of Lisbon’s largest and most beautiful shopping malls. Today, it comprises over 150 stores, as well as a multiplex cinema, a wide selection of restaurants, and a health club. Walkways connect it directly with Oriente station, one of Lisbon’s main transit hubs.

One of central Lisbon’s most beautiful parks, Estrela Garden (Jardim Da Estrela) is an oasis from the bustling neighborhoods of Bairro Alto and Chiado. Go for a stroll here to see tropical trees, sculptures, a small lake surrounded by an old English cemetery, and a wrought-iron gazebo. Some visitors combine a walk or picnic in the park with exploring the 18th-century Estrela Basilica (Basilica de Estrela).

In Lisbon’s affluent Lapa district, international embassies stand beside grand homes, including the official residence of the Portuguese prime minister. Neighborhood highlights include its historical mansions, the 15th-century São Bento Palace, and the famous Basilica da Estrela. Providing a welcome break from the buzz of central Lisbon, Lapa is especially popular with those seeking green space; the English-style Estrela Garden (Jardim de Estrela) boasts a pondside café for wine and snacks.

With its elegant landscaping and meandering pathways, the Gulbenkian Garden provides a serene retreat from Lisbon's busy city streets. Here, nature lovers can explore garden trails that wind past a variety of plants and trees, and around a large pond. Plan a visit here to relax during an open-air concert, attend a talk or workshop, or simply kick back with an ice cream at the café.

The Casa-Museu Amália Rodrigues is dedicated to the great Queen of fado, Portugal’s most famous musical genre. Her three-story former home now features more than 30,000 of Rodrigues’ personal items on display for fans to discover. Visitors can see her glamorous outfits, portraits, awards, jewelry, and recordings on display.

Across the red 25th of April Bridge (Ponte 25 de Abril) from Lisbon begins a prized strip of coastline called the Costa da Caparica. Extending for about 16 miles (26 kilometers) from a city of the same name down to the Arriba Fóssil nature preserve, the area is a Portuguese mainstay for surfing and sunbathing. Head to its windswept beaches to watch fishermen and kitesurfers in action, then take in the scenery from a different angle on clifftop trails.

Visible in the distance from any of Lisbon’s famous seven hills, the Tagus River (Rio Tejo) is a lasting symbol of the city. Not only is it the longest river in the Iberian Peninsula, but its port is one of the busiest in Europe. Plus, on the banks of the Tagus River, you’ll find some of the capital’s top attractions, including the UNESCO–listed Belém Tower.

An ornate baroque palace located in the heart of Lisbon, Foz Palace (Palacio Foz) was built in the 18th century and received extravagant interior updates in the 1800s. The halls of this palace are typically not open to visitors, but that doesn’t stop the building from adding class and color to Restauradores Square. Various institutions, including the National Museum of Sport and a tourist information center, have taken over parts of the palace.

Shopping, dining, and coworking are just a few of the things you can do at LX Factory, a retail destination beneath Lisbon’s landmark 25th of April Bridge (Ponte 25 de Abril). The cluster of 19th-century factory buildings, now decorated with murals and art installations, houses more than 50 stores and eateries selling everything from books and brigadeiros (a type of dessert) to vintage clothes and quirky souvenirs. On Sundays, yet more vendors gather at LX Factory for a weekly flea market.

Casa Fernando Pessoa is dedicated to the life of one of Portugal’s most prolific writers. Fernando Pessoa called this apartment in Lisbon’s Campo de Ourique neighborhood home for the last 15 years of his life. Today it is now filled with his personal possessions including his writing desk, handwritten letters, paintings, and tapestries.

The historic Dom Fernando II e Glória frigate was the Portuguese Navy’s last wooden sailing warship. Featuring 50 cannons, the vessel has been restored to appear as it did when the Portuguese Navy launched it in 1843. The ship, now dry-docked just outside of Lisbon, is one of the best-preserved examples of a wooden-hulled frigate in the world, making it a must-visit for travelers interested in maritime history.

The sunny-yellow Bica Funicular (Ascensor da Bica) has been hauling passengers from Lisbon’s waterfront to the historic Bairro Alto district since 1892. More than a means of transportation, the funicular follows a scenic route along one of the city’s most picturesque (and steepest) streets, providing views of lively plazas, brightly painted buildings, and the azure Tagus River from the top.

The world’s oldest operating bookstore, Livraria Bertrand’s Chiado outlet has been serving bookworms since 1732. Now one of roughly 60 bookshops, the azulejo-tiled frontage with its art deco sign houses a café, historical paintings and murals, and areas dedicated to the giants of Portuguese literature. In addition to signings, it runs book clubs, courses, and classes.

Situated on the River Tagus (Rio Tejo) in the center of Lisbon’s downtown, Lisbon Cruise Port is conveniently located for cruise passengers wanting to explore this charming city’s many attractions. However, it also serves as a jumping-off point for venturing farther afield into the surrounding countryside and beyond.

Stalls at Mercado de Santa Clara (Feira da Ladra) sell a wide range of items, including antiques, vintage pieces, handicrafts, and all sorts of knick-knacks. This twice-weekly market has been a moving fixture in Lisbon for centuries, before it settled in the São Vicente neighborhood. While you’ll now find souvenirs, the market still has a down-to-earth approach, with goods often arranged on rugs on the ground.

Often touted as one of the most beautiful viewpoints in Lisbon, Miradouro de Santa Luzia is a dreamy terrace overlooking the Tagus River and the capital’s Alfama district. With its hilltop location next to Santa Luzia Church, it offers views of landmarks such as the baroque National Pantheon and the Church of St. Michael. It’s also famous for its pergolas covered in climbing flowers and walls adorned with blue-and-white azulejo tiles.

One of Lisbon’s oldest museums, the Lisbon Military Museum (Museu Militar de Lisboa) dates back to 1876 and is a must for anyone interested in military history. Spread across baroque rooms adorned with gold pillars and ceiling frescoes, it’s as much an architectural highlight as a historical one. Exhibits offer a fascinating look at Portugal’s military past, and feature artillery pieces, cannons, swords, pistols, and other firearms.

Housed in a sweeping, wave-shaped white building along the Tagus riverfront, Lisbon’s leading museum of architecture, design, and engineering definitely looks the part. Open since 2016, the Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology, or MAAT, leads the way with forward-thinking temporary exhibitions, events, and workshops, often with a strong focus on renewable energy solutions.

Note: The museum is closed for renovations until 2026. The National Archaeology Museum (Museu Nacional de Arqueologia) in Lisbon is filled with archaeological treasures, from Egyptian mummies to Iron Age jewelry, Roman mosaics and Moorish artifacts. Located within the western wing of the Jerónimos Monastery, the museum explores Portugal’s archaeological heritage from prehistoric times.

At the heart of downtown Lisbon, Rossio Station (Estação do Rossio) is part transport hub and part architectural landmark. Built in the late 19th century, it is regarded as one of Europe’s most beautiful train stations thanks to its striking neo-Manueline facade and horseshoe-shaped arches. Trains run from here to UNESCO–listed Sintra, the city’s most popular day-trip destination.

The Museum of Contemporary Art and Architecture Centre is an art museum that’s home to works by many influential 20th- and 21st-century artists, including Andy Warhol, Pablo Picasso, and Salvador Dalí. The permanent exhibitions are displayed in chronological order in the minimalist white galleries, which makes them easy to explore. There are also temporary exhibitions that showcase emerging artists and special themes.

Famous for its landscaped gardens and exquisite traditional Portuguese tiles known as azulejos, the Palace of the Marquises of Fronteira, or Palace Fronteira, is one of the country’s best-preserved estates. Still privately owned, the 17th-century mansion has been passed down through generations of Portuguese aristocrats. It sits on the edge of the vast Monsanto Forest Park north of Belem, putting it off the beaten path for most visits to Lisbon.

St. Anthony, also known as Anthony of Padua or the patron saint of lost things, didn’t actually hail from Padua in Italy—in fact, he was born some 1,500 miles (2,400 kilometers) away in Lisbon. The Church of St. Anthony, an 18th-century baroque landmark that’s now a National Monument, denotes his birthplace and remains a popular place of worship.

Portuguese equestrian art—a type of choreographed horseback riding performed by local Lusitano horses and period-costumed riders—dates back to the 18th-century court of King John V. The Portuguese School of Equestrian Art (Escola Portuguesa de Arte Equestre) preserves the tradition today with regular shows, and you can watch the rehearsals most mornings at the school’s riding ring in Belém.

The Teatro Nacional de São Carlos is a national monument and the only theater in Portugal devoted to producing opera, choral, and symphonic music. The Portuguese Symphony Orchestra and the Choir of the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos perform here, as well as visiting artists. It’s a great place to catch a concert in Lisbon or to admire its neoclassical facade during sightseeing tours.

Lisbon has no shortage of stunning viewpoints—it is, after all, known as the City of Seven Hills. From various spots around the city, you can enjoy vistas across the roofs of colorful buildings and the Tagus River (Rio Tejo), while on a clear day, you may see all the way to Almada. Miradouro das Portas do Sol—translated as the Gates of the Sun viewpoint—offers one of Lisbon’s most famous views.

Centrally located in Lisbon’s Chiado district, the National Museum of Contemporary Art (also known as the Chiado Museum or MNAC) is home to a vast collection of almost 5,000 pieces of Portuguese modern art. Spanning from the late 19th century to today, its galleries showcase Portuguese romantic, naturalist, modern, and contemporary works, with highlights such as pieces by Almada Negreiros, and Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso.
