Grand Army Plaza dates back to the 1860s, when it was designed by landscape architects Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux (also the designers of Central Park) as the grand entrance to Brooklyn’s Prospect Park. The public plaza was designed as a memorial to Union soldiers who fought in the Civil War.
