Itinerary
After pickup from selected central Vienna hotels or Vienna State Opera, it’s a scenic 3.5-hour coach ride to Hallstatt and its crystal-clear lake.
Start your visit with a guided walking tour, learning about the town’s 7,000 years of history and the salt mines that made the region rich.
In summer, follow this with a boat ride across the lake—a perfect opportunity to capture pictures of the town framed by mountains. In winter, visit the Hallstatt Ossuary, home to 1,200 human skulls dating back as far as the 12th century, many hand-painted and arranged in family groups.
There’s free time to explore and grab some lunch at one of Hallstatt’s restaurants and cafés (own expense) before returning to your hotel or the opera house.

First and foremost Hallstatt is beautiful. Also the journey to Hallstatt is breathtaking. In general, this trip is mainly for sightseeing and enjoying the picturesque view. If you are visiting during winter time, you should think about wearing snow shoes. Our tour guide Stefan was a great guy with humour who was more than willing to show us around and suggest us ways to pass our time.

Our trip was amazing. Our tour guide,Karen, was incredible and very funny. She is very knowledgable from the start of the tour explaining parts of Vienna to the end! The bus ride was a great way to see parts of Austria we may not have been able to see. Hallstatt is a beautiful lake town. The mountains and town are so picturesque that everywhere you turn offers a beautiful view. The boat ride at the end of the tour is a perfect way to bid farewell to the charming city.

We had a wonderful time on our day trip to Hallstatt. Our tour guide Christopher, was a wonderful guide. Very friendly and has lots of information for everyone. This is along day trip, so this isn't really for children. You'll have two stops, one on the way there and one on the way back for bathroom break and meals. The tour bus very clean and neat, the driver was very good and kept everyone safe. Hallstatt is very picturesquest. It is crowded with tourists, so be patient. Lord of walking around and lots of restaurants and shops.

It was an amazing experience but I recommend to take the tour from Salzburg which is much closer
But the weather is also very important

Memorable experience. The commentator Theodora was excellent. Her commentary made a difference. This trip gives you ample time to relish this magical view.

The guide is very knowledgeable and shares plenty of interesting information about the country. The place is magical and we had enough free time as well to do our own thing.

Hallstatt is an extremely beautiful town and we loved exploring it but be forewarned, it takes over four hours to get there so when you consider the round trip travel time, your talking about almost nine hours in a bus to spend barely four hours in Hallstatt. There was also a baby on the bus which did not help! The guide and driver were excellent

Amazing trip with beautiful landscapes and good explanations even if the road is quite long with a baby

Beautiful lake area and town. Worth the drive and the battle with the crowds. Tour guide needs to have clothes or sign that really stand out. Was easy to get lost from her. Also, people of the tour should be given handout of highlights of areas to see and map of meeting points and times.

Nice and relaxed travel. 4+4 hours travel, with good 45 mins break after 2 hours.
Spent 3-3.5 hours at Hallstatt which included beautiful boat ride as well.
Katelyn_M, Sep 2025
Hallstatt is beautiful and you should definitely go see this gorgeous place. The tour guide was very nice and helpful! The boat ride was beautiful and a great way to enter into the town! However we did not know it would be a lot of time on the bus, expect at least 4-5 hours there AND back on the bus due to stops at rest stops for extended periods of time.
Isabel_R, Sep 2025
Trip was great but would have been better without the tour guide (or with a different tour guide). Tour guide rambled on for 2 hours non stop without breather jumping randomly in somewhat broken english between history, trivia, and whatever else came to mind on the way in and for another while on the way back while tour guests tried to drown out the sound using headphones.
Hallstadt and the boat trip where beautiful - 5 stars if it wasn t dor the guide
Margaret_F, Sep 2025
it was great all of it and Hallstatt wow it heaven on earth dont miss it and even the tour leader and the coach driver where great
Rita_P, Aug 2025
Good visit however bus stops for food and beverage too long. It was 45 minutes twice. Too long as we ended up arriving at drop off location at 8:30pm at night.
Nur_Y, Aug 2025
Hallstatt is amazing and you should definitely visit no matter what. The tour was very long and felt like mostly driving. 8 hours spent on the bus and just a few hours in the most beautiful town. The tour guide basically coerced you into taking her guided tour and it left very little time to go take the funicular and explore by myself. I was literally running around. The tour guide also talked wayyyyy tooooo much
susan_t, Jul 2025
Beautiful place but just choked with so many tourists that you can hardly move.
Long bus trip to get there first a short while.
Christine_D, Jun 2025
Hallstatt is a nice place to visit but the trip was a bit too long due to the length of breaks we took.
vincent, May 2025
Long way from Vienna, but worth it. Beautiful little town, experienced your guide made the trip smoothly.
Francisco_R, May 2025
This tour is extremely lengthy and tiring for what you get. You will find that the village is quaint but lacks facilites for tourists. I can understand why the people who reside here would not be open to tourists- i actually felt uncomfortable invading their space.
Response from Host, May 2025
Dear Francis,

The guide was very informative. Knew his details very well. Had a great time. It was a long day with a 4 hour drive either way, but still I would not want to stay in Hallstat so the option of a daytrip from Vienna was great.

Modern comfortable bus, hotel pickup, knowledgeable guide, definitely worth the money. Great experience.
Yamin_A, Nov 2024
The tour guide was really nice. The trip was lovely. Even though it was raining heavily we fully enjoyed the trip
Judy_M, Oct 2024
Beautiful place but way too crowded for me. Very touristy however The tour guide was very knowledgeable and the bus very comfortable. Was a bit confused with the selection of the morning pick up place.
AraceliD, Oct 2024
I am glad that I get to see this amazing place. It was raining when I went there but still worth it.
Donna_M, Oct 2024
Good tour but long drive on bus that stops at rest areas that are way overpriced. Bring food and don’t get sucked in.
Kimmy, Oct 2024
Hallstatt itself is absolutely beautiful. Four hours there is way too long as there isn’t anything to do.
The drive there is very long and they take you to an overpriced rest stop on the way there and the way back.
