Your day trip begins in central Vienna, where you'll meet up with your guide and hop aboard your coach.

Watch the scenery change from the capital’s bustling streets to the picturesque landscape of the Austrian countryside. Journey through the UNESCO-listed Wachau Valley, a 24-mile (39-km) stretch of the Danube River. Running between the towns of Krems and Melk, the area is celebrated for its blend of natural and historical beauty, dotted with vineyards, wine villages, forestland, fortresses, and castles. Hear about the history of the area from your guide as you travel.

Pass by the medieval castle ruins of Dürnstein Castle before heading to Spitz, where you hop aboard a boat. Enjoy a stunning ride along the Danube, passing the wine town of Krems.

Arrive in Melk for a visit to the Benedictine Melk Abbey (if option selected), which overlooks the river. First established in the 11th century, the Baroque-style abbey is adorned in bright frescoes and has housed monks for over 900 years.

Then, hop back in your coach for a smooth return to Vienna.

Don't miss this trip. Fabulous scenery! Excellent bus transportation and guide. Riverboat ride fantastic! Great views for about an hour. Do not miss going for lunch the restaurant food there was outstanding. I highly recommend the penne with vegetables and a grilled piece of chicken is what I had was awesome. And of course, sign up for the Abby incredible tour of the Abbey and of course the gardens were very nice. We love the trees. They look like mushrooms. Our guide. Claudia was outstanding so I hope you get her. She was excellent. Fantastic trip. Don't miss it , One of the best trips I've ever had with Viator Claudia made it extra special.

If you’re only in Vienna...

If you’re only in Vienna for a few days then I wouldn’t recommend this tour. Although it was enjoyable, I don’t think the main attraction which was visiting the abbey ( 2.5 hours out of a 10 day trip) is worth it.

Too many issues

There are a lot of stairs and the boat ramps are steep I use a cane and can walk but these made it difficult. Also time was allocated badly. Everyone was hurrying to get back to bus on time

Excellent guide - very informed and knowledgeable though he could be a bit louder and more enthusiastic. Had great knowledge of history of Vienna. We were about 35 people so at times it was hard for us to hear him speak when we were at the back of the crowd. Else, we really enjoyed the experience.

Worth the trip

The entire tour was very good. The guy who was in Spanish and English was amazing and was a constant source of knowledge. They really made sure about the logistics to get you out to about 100 km away from the city of Vienna. The first stop was a small little village, which was quaint, and then we took the boat tour, which gave you a little bit of a feeling of what it might be like to take a river cruise down the Danube the boat tour was about an hour and a half And with beautiful scenery and finally we ended up in the area called MELK. Which is close by the melk abbey which was worth the trip. The Abbey is spectacular and looks like a palace in a beautiful setting with amazing history and culture. The Abbey is a working Abby and a working school. Just the Abbey alone was worth the trip because it would’ve been really hard to rent a car just to go travel by yourself out there to see the Abbey it’s a world heritage site

Waste of time and money. Guide wasn't pleasant, too much free time, they probably wanted us to spend time on the boat restaurante instead enjoying the river, towns was nice

Danube Valley Experience

The bulk of the day’s travel was on a comfortable coach bus. The tour guide was a talented and well versed communicator and accommodated for English and Spanish speaking passengers. His commentary coincided with the countryside and points of interest as we approached by bus. The first stop was a toilet stop and short walk along the Danube to a quaint little village of Durnstein. Shortly after we were back on the bus for a short ride to meet the boat trip to Melk. The scenery was very impressive and extremely historic. At Melk we walked to Melk Abbey and had a choice of paying to visit the Monastery and/or gardens or walk down to the Melk town. After a very reasonable time we returned to Vienna by bus. A good day out with great commentary seeing a broad section of the Danube and part of its valley.

A reasonable tour for...

A reasonable tour for casual tourists. The highlight of the tour is Melk Monastery, which is reasonably interesting to general visitors for its architecture, scenery, and some internal features. The river cruise is also generally worth it. Those wanting a long river cruise or longer stay in the bank settlements should choose something else.

Our Tour Guide Tommy was...

Our Tour Guide Tommy was informative, with a dry sense of humor. The only drawback is that some of the passengers were Spanish-speaking so Tommy had to repeat what he just said in English in Spanish, so it was a bit disruptive. The village of Durnstein was quaint. The boat ride on the Danube was wonderful, since the weather was nice. Melk was worth the whole trip; we did not tour the optional Abby so we could have more time to spend wandering through the picturesque village. We found a great place to eat (there are several) and a pottery shop with great items at very reasonable prices.

So well organized from beginning to end - we met at a very clearly defined and beautiful place - The Vienna Opera House - and got on a nice bus to tour the city and local countryside. Our boat trip on the Blue Danube was a dream come true and visiting the small towns was a treat! Melk Abbey was so beautiful and a very nice addition to the experience! My watch said I got in over 12,500 steps that day too.

We left on a national holiday, May 1. So, the tour operator had to deal with street closures and mess ups with the busses. They did a marvelous job navigating the problems and giving us a wonderful experience. The true test of a tour operator is not how well they do in an ideal environment but how they adept to changing circumstances. These people did a wonderful job. As to the tour itself, it was a wonderful experience. We thoroughly enjoyed it. Our guide was friendly and informative. She was a true pleasure. We highly recommend this tour.

Wonderful tour! We absolutely loved the medieval city of Durnstein which we visited the beginning of the trip. The Boat trip on the Danube was exquisite. The boat has great facilities and it was a very relaxing exoerience. The food was excellent and there is a full floor on the boat that serves as a restaurant or you can eat on the upper deck where you get a better view as you pass through the various villages. Melk Abbey was the absolute highlight of the trip. It is such an amazing place and well worth visiting! We had enough time to do some souvenir shopping and have lunch in the village outside the Abbey. Our guide was great, though unfortunately I don’t recall his name. All in all, it was a wonderful tour that we will forever remember fondly!

Nice day trip along the Danube

Nice tour to the Danube valley that included stops in three villages and the Melk abbey. The guide was knowledgeable and provided a lot of useful information about the area and its history. My only issue with the tour was the too long self time. I would prefer one or two more stops, for example, in the old walled churches instead of free time in another pedestrian zone with Christmas market

A good tour of Danube River

The Danube River boat ride was phenomenal. So many small villages by the river which work very picturesque. The Melk Abbey tour on the other hand what's a bit disappointing. Our tour guide was very young and spoke too fast and did not quite emphasize the importance of the Abbey itself. She seemed to be either nervous or in a hurry that specific day.

This trip was very fun. The boat ride on the Danube was very relaxing and the scenery was beautiful. We had stops in a couple little towns that were very cute. One note, is if you take this trip on a Saturday, most of the shops in Melk close at noon which we were not informed about. The Melk Abby was fun to see as well. Our guide in the Abby was adorable and you could tell she was very passionate about her job.

We had a great trip by bus and boat to the Wachau region of the Danube! Our guide was very knowledgeable and helpful. The who area was just amazing. If you would like to see the wine country, the castles, Melk, Durnstein, etc. in one day this is a great way to do that.
