An absolutely wonderful way to visit Sintra and get an engaging review of its history! It was a beautiful day for a walking tour. Joao was a charming and gracious guide and he takes great (but outwardly modest) pride in his home. And well he should!

This was a fantastic tour of Sintra... Joao was friendly and knowledgeable, mixing history with geology (yes!) in fascinating stories and little-known gems about Portugal. All while leading us on quite a walk/hike! He took us on some of the quieter routes to avoid the crowds, which made the experience so much more special. FWIW, we are a family with two teenagers, who also loved Joao and the tour.

João was an amazing tour guide — born and raised in Sintra, he has incredible knowledge of the area and Portuguese history. We visited the Moorish Castle, Pena Palace, and Quinta da Regaleira. The tour is a truly unique experience, walking through the forest and learning history along the way.
Be prepared: it’s a bit of a hike with plenty of uphill and downhill walking, so bring snacks and water since there’s no stop for food during the tour. João speaks excellent English and is a personable, easy-to-talk-to guide. If you want a quick bite before the tour, Café Cynthia at the meeting point has great snacks.
Highly recommended for anyone who wants a deeper, more local experience of Sintra.

8 miles of walking and 81 flights. But the history , flora, views were awesome . Joao was a wealth of knowledge and took me on paths with less people . The description of the castle and palace were detailed and interesting

One of the best guided tours we've experienced. João was an extremely well prepared tour guide! We covered so much territory--literal and historical--it was obvious how much care he had put into this tour, because we never felt overwhelmed or rushed. Highly recommend!

João our guide was very knowledgeable so we had a very interesting tour. Although there were many tourists João took on paths that were away from the crowds when it was possible.

This was the best way to experience Sintra! We walked up to both the Moorish castle and the Pena Palace. João was extremely knowledgeable and did a fantastic job making all the history easy to understand. Bring your walking shoes (we tracked 8miles) and be prepared to learn a lot. We could not recommend this tour enough!!

If you want to see Park Pena and the palace in a personal and detailed way, take this tour with Joao. You will take paths that avoid the crowds and give you a more personal view of the beauty of the city, the park and the palace. Wear good walking shoes as you’ll be climbing hills and lots of stairs!

Amazing. I'm not a big review writer, but I have to share my enthusiasm for how João is promoting and preserving Sintra's history. His knowledge of history- geological, literary, cultural... over the centuries and interwoven throughout the hike really brought Sintra to life in all of its beauty. Be prepared to walk several miles uphill and downhill if you want to see more with this tour. With that said, it's clear that João can easily modify the hike with different routes for a full experience.

Joao is an amazing gudie, having grown up in Sinatra he knows the town, monuments and historical figures exceptionaly well.
Be ready for a walk but he tailors the tour depending on your interests (and tiredness) which is much appreciated.

João made our trip to Sintra truly magical. He was extremely knowledgeable (he is a local here) and told us many interesting facts about the different locations, from the fascinating history of this place right down to the different species of trees and wildlife here in Sintra. The route was really scenic, and João often led us to little hidden gems that we otherwise wouldn’t have noticed! We definitely felt that walking this route made us feel more connected to the place, and although it was sometimes quite steep in places (so do wear comfortable shoes), it was so worth it! At the end of the tour he also gave us fantastic food recommendations!
