Visiting Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp was one of the most powerful and sobering experiences of my life. This is not a typical tourist attraction—it is a place of remembrance, reflection, and education. Our guide was outstanding: deeply knowledgeable, respectful, and able to connect history with the broader lessons that remain urgent today.
The camp’s design itself tells the story: the triangular layout, Tower A as the only entrance, and Station Z as the “exit” where industrialized killing took place. Standing by the roll call square at dawn, hearing how thousands were forced to line up in the cold, was chilling. The details were harrowing but important—prisoners living packed 700 to a barrack built for 150, the absurd forced labor meant to break spirits, and the systematic dehumanization where a person’s worth was reduced to their ability to work.
The guide wove in survivors’ testimonies that made the history painfully real. One prisoner described feeling like “an insect trapped in a jar.” Another spoke of how survival required both hope and community, because “you cannot survive a camp alone.”
What made this tour exceptional was how it placed Sachsenhausen in the wider context: Nazi propaganda, international failures like the Évian Conference, and even the postwar use of the camp by the Soviets. The guide did not shy away from modern parallels, noting how extremist ideologies still persist and why memorialization matters.
Practical advice: wear comfortable shoes, bring water, and prepare emotionally. This is a large site with limited amenities. The visitor center has an excellent museum and audio guides if you prefer to go at your own pace.
This is not an easy visit, but it is absolutely essential. Sachsenhausen teaches not only about the past but about our responsibility today—to recognize hatred, resist indifference, and preserve the voices of those who endured.

It’s wonderful that our guide was able to provide historical context, survivor stories, and important reflections that brought the site’s history to life while connecting it to broader lessons for today.

Maria was an amazing wealth of information. The tour was paced very well & we spent ample time exploring the camp. Unlike visiting Yad Vashem or the US Holocaust Museum, the focus of this tour was not the victims as much as the horror the Nazis maliciously & purposely planned. This site was the “innovation center” to the horrors that unfolded.
Response from Host, Sep 2025
Thank you for your thoughtful feedback! We’re delighted to hear that Maria provided such a well-paced and informative tour. We appreciate your reflections on the focus and unique perspective of the site, and we’re glad you found the experience meaningful and insightful.
All the best,

Natalie was the best guide we’ve had this trip. We did a private tour and she was highly knowledgeable, friendly and patient. My mom was in a wheelchair and she was able to find a route that was accessible to her. I highly recommend a private tour if able and with Natalie.

Her knowledge, friendliness, and thoughtfulness in accommodating your mom’s wheelchair truly make a difference. We’re thrilled you enjoyed the private tour and would highly recommend it to others.

Tour Company, Tour Berlin, was top notch. We booked the tour without much notice. Within minutes of booking, Mike from the tour company called me to confirm the tour details. He said our tour guide would be Klaus, and he would be at our hotel lobby waiting for us. We went down to the lobby 15 minutes early, and there was Klaus, already in the hotel lobby! Klaus provided us so much information, not just about the tour we were about to go on, but other details and helpful tips to know as a tourist in Berlin. (Your dinner suggestion was exactly what we wanted—-thank you, Klaus!) The tour wasn’t something uplifting, but Klaus provided so much rich history and details, and he answered all our questions. He also seemed to know when to stop and let us just be. The sign of an experienced guide. Overall, highly recommend this tour and tour company. We felt like we scored the bonus prize by having Klaus as our guide.

Our Guide Paul was wonderful and we learned so much about history and Hitler's rise to Power. The only downside, which is why I rated it a 4, is there was a lot of walking getting to and from the Train to the Camp,. That was remedied by hiring a couple of Taxi's.
Response from Host, May 2024
Dear Robert,
Thank you for sharing your experience with us! We're delighted to hear that Paul provided such an insightful tour, offering valuable insights into history and Hitler's rise to power. However, we apologize for the inconvenience caused by the amount of walking involved in getting to and from the train to the camp. Your feedback is valuable to us, and we're glad to hear that hiring taxis helped remedy the situation. We'll take your feedback into consideration to improve the overall experience for our future guests. We appreciate your rating and hope to have the opportunity to provide you with a seamless and enriching experience on your next visit.

We just completed the Private Tour of Sachsenhausen. Our guide, Nickolai, met us at our hotel right on time and then we took the train to Oranienburg Station and walked from the train station to the Sachsenhausen (about 20 minutes). Nickolai gave us an introduction of the history of Sachsenhausen while on the train and continued as we walked. This tour provided information about the location, operation, leadership, etc. with a great deal of reverence and respect. We came away feeling that the entire day was designed for us (the biggest advantage of a private tour with the professional guide) and far from the generic tour our friends went on. Be forewarned though, we walked close to 11,000 steps on this tour, some of it on uneven pavement.
Response from Host, Nov 2023
Dear ian,
It sounds like you had a comprehensive and personalized experience during your private tour of Sachsenhausen with Nickolai. The fact that he met you at your hotel and provided historical context during the train ride and walk to the site adds a layer of depth to the experience. The attention to detail and personalized approach likely contributed to a more meaningful and impactful visit to Sachsenhausen compared to a generic tour.
It's also helpful that you mentioned the physical aspect of the tour, noting the number of steps and the uneven pavement. This kind of information can be valuable for future visitors to be aware of, especially those who may have mobility concerns.
Overall, it seems like you had a well-organized and thoughtfully guided tour that left you with a deep understanding of the history and significance of Sachsenhausen.
All the very best.

I would most definitely recommend her to anyone who is looking to travel to Berlin.

I made a last-minute booking (24 hours) with the team at Insider Berlin tour team. Firstly, Mike - the representative from the tour company was a great communicator and promptly confirmed my tour, provided further information regarding the booking and answered all my queries.
For a tour of such gravity, I had the pleasure of spending the day with Ioana (pronounced Joanna). She was really the subject matter expert, and I couldn't have asked for a better and more knowledgeable guide. We met at the front of my hotel at the selected time and experienced local and regional trains out to Oranienburg, where we opted to catch a short taxi ride (about 6 Euros) to the camp. With Ioana's explanation of the thoughts and impact that was put behind the camp with historical background, the context of how Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp fit into Nazi history was an eye-opening and humbling experience. Ioana was professional and kind, offered excellent local knowledge in between WWII conversations, and completely tailored my experience based on my knowledge.
It was a long day (16,000 steps by the time I got back to the hotel) but thoroughly enjoyable. For those contemplating a private tour, it was worth every penny (or Euro in this case) I've spent.
Thank you, Ioana and Insider Berlin tour team, for a great experience!
Response from Host, Oct 2022

Totally misleading write up on what to expect. We decided to spend over $400.00 for this in that we thought with hotel pickup and drop off, a vehicle was involved. But it was not, the tour guide comes to your hotel and everyone takes a train to the city and if the bus is gone, you walk 25 minutes to the museum after a 30 minute train ride . First, they assumed we had a train ticket and the worst part was that the actual tour was only 2 hours at best. The guide was knowledgeable but we felt like he was in a hurry and rushed us. Don’t spend the money here when you can buy a cheaper tour with a bus ride or go on a group tour where you meet the tour guide at the freidrichstrasse stop which is easy to find.
Response from Host, Sep 2022
Dear dorisho…
Thank you for your review.
The title of the tour that you booked was 'Private Tour: Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp Memorial from Berlin by Train'. You will note the 'by Train’ part. Why you then thought a vehicle was involved is not something that we can answer. Our guide did not assume that you had train tickets, but did ask if you had train tickets, which you did. The guide hurried because he felt that you were in a hurry.
Our guide enjoyed his time with you both on the tour. In particular he enjoyed the conversations he had with you about things not related to the camp memorial, and he did comment on your generousity at the end of the tour. We were very happy to refund half the cost of the tour because you were unsatisfied with it.
Thank you again for your review.
Kind regards,
Gerard

My son and I enjoyed a very worthwhile experience in the Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp Memorial tour from Berlin by train.
The trip via public transit exposed us to everyday experiences of Berliners. The tour itself of Sachsenhausen was thorough, thought provoking and historically poignant. Martin was the consummate guide, enthusiastically sharing his extensive and exquisite knowledge of the camp, as well as life in communist East Germany. Martin’s affableness, candor, and insight was surely a bonus that added to the enjoyment of this tour.
Response from Host, Jul 2022
Dear Gina_K,
Thank you for your kind review of our Sachsenhausen concentration camp memorial tour with Martin. He grew up in the area and worked in the memorial itself for a long time so he surely knows more than most about this place. Add to that his top personality and he is sure to impress.
Kind regards,
Gerard

Chloe was a fantastic guide who really knew what she was talking about. She has done a lot of research on her own and makes her tour of Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp interactive. We were a small group of eight and Chloe provided door-to-door service, meeting us at the hotel, walking us to the train station where we caught the train to Oranienburg, then the bus to Sachsenhausen. She was prepared with return transportation tickets for all of us. She took her time and didn't make us feel at all rushed; if we wanted to spend a few minutes longer in a specific area, we could do so. I would highly recommend this tour and, specifically, Chloe as a guide.
Dermot O, Aug 2019
Our guide - Brian Bell was really excellent - very well informed on current affairs in Germany and extremely knowledgeable about Sachsenhausen and the political/social backdrop against which it was built and the uses to which it was put to.
Meander48570300199, May 2019
Walid, our guide, was amazing and made the day enjoyable and educational for everyone in our 7 person group. His sense of humor, flexibility, and commitment to make sure everyone was engaged were very much appreciated. Even though we weren't staying at a traditional hotel, Walid still found our Airbnb and started our day from there. A few people in our group would have had difficulty with all the walking this tour requires so Walid helped us out by getting a taxi to and from the train station in Oranienberg. Don't forget to pack your lunch and prepare for the day as amenities are a little scarce during most of the day. That said, if you are prepared you will find this tour to be an engaging and thoughtful experience. We were thankful to have Walid as our tour guide and would recommend him to anyone. Thanks for a great day Walid!

I'm so glad we took this tour of Hitler's first concentration camp. Pip was the best tour guide. She taught us so much in a friendly, informed way. I came away from the day understanding how important it is to never lose sight of our humanity. As time goes by, and fewer Holocaust survivors are here to bear witness, memorials like this one grow ever more important.
Kathi W, Feb 2017
This was a very moving, somber experience but a must for everyone to see. Our guide was very informative and knowledgeable. He picked us up at our hotel, had subway passes for us and brought us back to our hotel. Good thing too because I would not, have been able to find the camp as there was. O signage once we got to the town. Worth the money.
Yvonne_T, Jun 2016
Our tour guide, Taylor was amazing. He knew so much. We couldn't have asked for a better explanation of nazi Germany's rise and the use of concentration camps. We were given time to look to explore the exhibits but Taylor was always there to answer our questions. Station Z was chilling.
Judy.taitz, Nov 2015
I already responded once but guess you didn't get it. We thought this tour was ridiculously over priced and we had to pay extra for the train and not having a driver made it too extremely long and exhausting. Other people said they had tours that lasted 3-4 hrs and was 300.00 with a driver. We felt completely overcharged for what we got and will not pay the full amount
Piyuse D, Sep 2015
Maria was an excellent guide though this somber experience through the camp.
Thank you for taking your time to share the history with us
Eric, Sep 2015
Nikoli met us at our hotel and took us to the train station for our trip to Sachsenhausen. Due to the content of the tour, I cannot say it was wonderful as it was - appropriately - horrifying. However, Nikoli was expert in explaining the history of the camp. He made it a memorable experience and did it with great intensity and knowledge. I mean this in an excellent way...he was terrific and the tour was exceptional.
