Meet your guide at a centrally located meeting point in Berlin and board the train to the Sachsenhausen Memorial and Museum in Oranienburg (you must have an ABC pass for the train; tickets are not included).
More than 200,000 people were imprisoned here between 1936 and 1945. At first, the prisoners were primarily political opponents of the Nazi regime. However, people who were defined by the National Socialists as racially or biologically inferior were later included.
By 1939, there were a large number of citizens from the occupied European states imprisoned here. Tens of thousands of people died of starvation, disease, forced labor, and mistreatment, or they were victims of the systematic extermination by the Schutzstaffel, otherwise known as the SS. Thousands of other prisoners died during the “death marches” that followed the evacuation of the camp in April of 1945. At that time, approximately 3,000 sick prisoners, along with the doctors and nurses who had stayed behind in the camp, were freed by Soviet and Polish soldiers.
Not for the faint of heart, this tour features a visit to the punishment cells, gallows, gas chambers, and burial pits located inside the prison. Hear stories of prisoner bravery as well as the chilling atrocities that took place at the camp, which now serves as a national memorial to the prisoners who lived and died here.
The tour ends with a return train trip to Berlin.

We had the best trip. Obviously such a sad destination to visit but learnt so much and catered to our 3 children well. Having the guide meet us at our hotel and taking is us via two trains was such a relaxed experience as I would have struggled and been stressed.

This was a private tour, just 2 of us as a couple, and Rick, our guide an American, living in Berlin for 7 years was very nice and extremely informative with his knowledge of this subject. He met us outside our Hotel and we walked to train station to catch a couple trains to get where we had to go. A lot of walking g, which we love, and you get on and off public transport plus use stairs. All up it was 6 hrs 10am to 4pm and Rick made sure we got back to our hotel with the correct trains, and deposited us at our front door again, which was Awesome! It was a beautiful day wouldn't recommend it on a rainy day and even though we moved through things fairly quickly at the camp, it was enough with Ricks running commentary, and if we had really wanted, we could have stayed on after it finished, or finished up somewhere in town, Rick gave us that option. We chose to go back to the hotel. He then kindly wrote down all the info we needed via trains/buses, for us to get to the airport the next day, which proved invaluable! Just one thing, I think the ticket needed for the trains to get there and back, should have been included, rather than us having to buy them on the day. Even though they were only 7.70 euro each, it would have been a nice touch

Our tour guide happened to be a fill in for the usual guide that day, so I can't speak for the usual guide themselves. However, the guide who brought us, Sam, gave us the history behind each quarter, and allowed us time to view the entire museum segments as well. We especially liked this, because you can miss a lot of info if you don't go into the museums. The one thing I would mention - if you or your family is hardcore history buff, I would recommend a full day. 6 hours didn't cut the amount of information that you can read / listen to there.

Entire trip was well organized from start to finish. Jonny was a most knowledgeable and experienced guide. He shared a wealth of information, bringing as much emotional understanding of one of the world's most tragic and shameful periods of history. Will use the service again. Worth every penny.
