Driving the Seward Highway is completely free of charge; it’s the main route from Anchorage to Seward, and all pull-offs and scenic viewpoints are free, too. However, there are plenty of fun tours you can take that will handle the driving for you so you can concentrate on the scenery; guided tours start at around US$130 per person.

The 127-mile (204-kilometer) drive takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours without stops. But stopping is actually the point—with scenic pullouts, wildlife viewing, and breaks at places like Beluga Point, the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, and Exit Glacier, most travelers spend 4–8 hours on the journey. Plan accordingly to fully experience this spectacular route.

The best stops along the Seward Highway include Potter Marsh, which offers a 1,500-foot (457-meter) boardwalk for wildlife viewing; Beluga Point, ideal for spotting beluga whales; the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center with its grizzly bears, moose, and musk ox; and Exit Glacier, the only road-accessible glacier in Kenai Fjords National Park.

On the Seward Highway, expect to spot moose, bears, Dall sheep, and bald eagles throughout the drive. Beluga Point offers excellent opportunities to spot beluga whales swimming near the coast during their late-summer runs, too. The Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center guarantees sightings of bears, moose, and wolves in their natural habitats if you prefer more of a sure thing.

Yes, there are a few hiking trails along the Seward Highway: Bird Ridge Trail climbs 3,000 feet in just over a mile, offering magnificent views of Turnagain Arm. Johnson Pass, Carter Lake, Victor Creek, and Ptarmigan Creek trails are near Moose Pass. Exit Glacier offers short walks to the glacier’s tip, plus the challenging Harding Icefield hike for those who are up to it.
