Beautiful Meteora
The bus ride of 4 hours each way is a little daunting, but Meteora itself is awe inspiring. There was no commentary at all during the 8 hrs there and back. When we arrived in Kalambaka, we picked up our guide Clement who was lovely and informative. We walked up at least 700 steps, definitely got the cardio today! I don’t remember it being quite as difficult 30+ years ago. Food was cafeteria style, got us in and out. Bathroom stops were clean and ok.

Amazing Tour
Exploring Meteora with our guide was hands-down the highlight of our trip to Greece. While visiting the main monasteries was already on our bucket list, what made this tour truly extraordinary was our guide's deep knowledge of the area's off-the-beaten-path locations.

Meteora is such a special place and the experience was amazing. Our driver and guide Harry was friendly and informative throughout the tour! Our conversations not only covered Meteora but also all things related to Greece. It was a long day but totally worth it!

Meteora byzantine monasteries perched on top of steep rocks, Greece
  • Wear comfortable shoes, bring sunscreen and water, and prepare to walk---all but one of the monasteries is reached by steep steps.

  • Visitors to the monasteries must have their shoulders and knees covered, and wraps are provided at the entrance.

  • The best options for restaurants and cafés are in Kalampaka, so bring a packed lunch if you plan to spend the day.

  • Be sure to check the opening days and times of the monasteries in advance, as they vary.

  • Plan to visit two or three monasteries on a day tour---to visit all six, you will need a 2-day tour.

  • St. Stephen's Monastery (Agios Stephanos) is the only wheelchair-accessible monastery.
