Consider going on your own...

BethWilcox, Sep 2025
2 tips for attendees: #1 dress code must be observed to enter the monastery, #2 monasteries and churches charge an additional entrance fee that is not disclosed ahead time. The tour we participated in allowed for entry into 1 monastery, however we personally witnessed larger tour groups pushing to the front of the line to enter the monastery ahead of our group that did not have a guide pushing ahead of everyone else. It was quite frustrating to see other guides advocating for their group when ours did not. We were not able to see the interior of the 1 monastery that was identified for our tour because of the excessive vistorship of a single monastery. The government, Orthodox church and tour operators appear to act without limits to the number of visitors which negatively impacts visitors. If we go again, we would go independently early in the day and avoid the tour group rush.

Response from Host, Sep 2025

Thank you for sharing your feedback and useful tips about dress code and entrance fees. The monasteries are extremely popular and during peak times the visitor flow is managed by the monastery staff themselves, not by the local agencies or guides. Our company always respects the sacredness of the site and the rules of the monasteries, which is why we never push ahead or disrupt the experience of others. We believe every guest deserves a respectful and meaningful visit, even if that sometimes means waiting a little longer. We’re proud to be the most organized local agency in Meteora, and our guides are committed to sharing history, culture, and hidden perspectives beyond just the interiors of the monasteries. For a quieter and more intimate experience, we often recommend our morning or sunset tours, where the flow of visitors is more relaxed. We hope you’ll give Meteora another chance with us we’d love to show you the area at its very best.

A nice way to spend an afternoon in Meteora

Mary_V, Sep 2025
Note that you only go inside one monastery, a small one at that (St Nicholas). And we weren’t told about the bus WiFi so it was only when reviewing the reservation just now that I saw that. But the views were great, and the church pretty (no pics allowed inside though). If you don’t want to do too much walking you see a lot for a little effort.

Response from Host, Sep 2025

Thank you for your feedback! We’re glad you enjoyed the incredible views and the visit to St. Nicholas Monastery. Just to clarify, for the Sunset Meteora tour it is standard that only one monastery is visited internally. We appreciate your insights and hope you still had a memorable Meteora experience!

Recommended Meteora Sunset Tour

barbara_c, May 2025
It is quite a long trip (nearly 4.5 hrs from pick yp and drop off, with a fair amount of twisting roads in nice minicoach. But this guide and driver (Vassilika was the guide) were both excellent both in term's of knowledge and english. The Aunset Trip we did included a stop for about 40 minutes at Ag Stefanos Monastary which is inhabited by Nuns not Monks and has the easiest foot access. It was lively, and as with Churches, interior photos or videos cannot be taken. The grounds and views are lovely, as were the interiors our trip also included the Byzantine Church of the Holy Virgin-very interesting history and secret garden residents! We also made a stop at The Hermit Caves, sadly roo steep for me and my husband to walk up to, so 3 of us stayed at the bottom. The group were up there about an hour. We made a number of stops along the way for photo stops, ending at ‘Sunset rock’ to clamber onto the rocks (be careful) but aadly the sunset was too shy and hidden behind heavy clouds today! But the view was still awe inspiring. The tour operator ‘Meteora Thrones’ also offer tours in other languages, morning tours and trekking trips. They all offer different monastery visits.

Response from Host, Jun 2025

Thank you for your detailed and thoughtful review! We're happy to hear you enjoyed the tour with Vassiliki and found the experience enriching, even if the sunset didn’t fully cooperate. Each stop, from the monasteries to the Hermit Caves, offers something unique, and we’re glad you could take in so much of Meteora’s beauty. We’d love to welcome you back for another tour in the future!

Great tour

Good for Morning and Afternoon Tours

Somya_S, Jan 2025
There was some duplication from the morning tour but all in all , it was a good day. We covered substantial ground. Tip - If you plan to visit all monasteries, you can do a combination of this two tours and then on your own. In December, it should cost about $20 to visit these monateries.

We touched heaven

I loved how the guide built up the suspense as we ascended into the mountains. She had a personal connection to St Stephens monetary which made it particularly special.

George_D, Jul 2024
Informative tour guides, comfortable bus, small group, beautiful scenery and monastery. In the future I will drive myself however as the roads are well maintained and I have benefited already from a tour guide.

Best Meteora Tour for any age

Artemis_S, Feb 2024
I love this tour and I've taken different family members on it three times, even though I had a car. The tour took us places I did not know about the first 2 times I visited Meteora.

Meteora Monasteries

Kara_H, Jul 2023
This was a great experience and tour! Our tour guide was so informative and fun to interact with. She considered the group's needs with the extreme hot weather we experienced, but made sure we saw all the sights.

Great tour!

rene_c, May 2023
Excellent tour with knowledgeable tour guides. This tour gave us visibility to all of the monasteries and time to visit, see, and take pictures. Great mix of picture time, small hike, and time to visit. They provided interesting commentary and a small group environment. Definitely a must do!

What a site!

Barbara_P, May 2023
The mountains are majestic and the monasteries are inspirational not only for those who built them but also for all that work to keep them open. This is a site not to be missed. Our tour guide was not as knowledgeable as other Viator tour guides but he took us to all the right spots. Also, going on the sunset tour only allows you to go into 1 monastery. I would recommend a tour earlier in the day to see more of these unbelievable sites. The roads are in perfect condition so if driving you can go back for the sunset yourself.

Fabulous Experience

Monita_C, Apr 2023
We enjoyed the rich history, thoughtfulness provided by our guide and driver throughout the entire tour. 👍

An Amazing Experience!

Michael_R, Mar 2023
The tour was fantastic! The guide originally from Toronto was VERY knowledgeable of Greece, the sites, and the culture and kept the tour informative and fun! The churches and monasteries easily conveyed a sense of awe and there were many opportunities to stop and take pictures along the way of the beautiful locations! Highly recommend this tour!

Magical experience! Must do on your first night!

Brooke_D, Jan 2023
Pick up was on time. Bus was modern and new. Clement our tour guide was very friendly and knew his information. Watching sunset is magical! It is definitely a must do whilst in Meteora. It would have been nice to know what Monasteries we would be visiting to make sure that we didn’t double up on a previous day. Unfortunately we had been to some of the same monasteries that morning. This is a tour you should definitely do on your first night in Meteora as it gives you a good idea of what to do on your upcoming days.

Wonderful guide, stunning tour and views!

MANOELA_W, Jan 2023
Clement was an absolutely fantastic guide. Very knowledgeable, extremely personable. He answered all our questions and also gave us some time to explore the monastery and take in the views at the rock. We made a lot of stops along the way, to other monasteries and views, some of which he said were unplanned. Highly recommend the tour and Clement as a guide!!!

Fantastic!

Voula_M, Aug 2022
Amazing! The guide and driver were fantastic. So kind! The trip is fantastic! Once in a lifetime and breathtaking.

Avoid booking this trip - No added value

Sebastien_C, Aug 2022
I wish I had not made this booking. Very long tour with too much time spent on visiting a church and stopping by at a cafe. The guide did not share enough of his culture / knowledge. Trip that can be made on your own …

Response from Host, Aug 2022

Dear Sebastien , Thank you for your time We are sorry that this 5 star rated tour hasnt met your expecations. The incident with the behaviur of the youngsters in the tour maybe it was a reason. We hope to join another tour with us and make you feel happy Have a nice summer Thank you

Offers an Overview of the Area

Sandralee_K, Jun 2022
Guide was very knowledgeable about the Orthodox religion - it’s beginnings and beliefs, which I found interesting. I enjoyed visiting the church. If you’ve already done a monasteries tour though, you do tend to retrace your steps somewhat. We did get to visit saint Stephens - the last of the 6 remaining. I would have liked more time on Sunset Rock to enjoy the view.

Great photo options with multiple destinations

meridth_l, May 2022
Great views. Only got to visit inside one monastery due to timing of event. Did enjoy the church. Bring good walking shoes as there are a lot of stairs. Would recommend for the transports between locations. Great snack stop/ beverage stop at also.

Beautiful!

Paul_B, May 2021
Chris was VERY enthusiastic... we loved his energy. He gave us theories of the geology of Meteora... stories of how the monasteries came into existence... background into the Greek-Orthodox Church... and much more. We had the best views and pictures. I would definitely recommend!

Wonderful Place

Chadi K, Jul 2019
The service was great the Hotel we booked is awesome with the pool outside and after a long trip by train you can imagine how it feel to have a swim. the food is delicious. the tour is extraordinary the guide and the driver were so helpful and provide you with a lot of information. it is a wonderful place to see and feel the majestic moments

Excellent tour

chengyvo, Nov 2018
We went to Meteora in winter for a day-trip from Athens. The tour guide and mini-bus picked us up directly at Kalambaka train station. (They also dropped us off at Kalambaka station at the end of the tour in time for the train back to Athens on same day.) Tour guide Chris and driver George were both excellent. They knew all the best spots for panoramic views, very informative and friendly. We had enough time to visit inside two monasteries (Varlaam and Holy Trinity) as well as make half a dozen photo stops. Highly recommended.

After booking and confirmed, no one called me or emailed me anything to confirm the tour. Ended up me calling them and found out that the pickup time is different from what's written in the voucher it is actually 3.30pm instead of 4.30pm. The pickup was relatively on time, just a few minutes late. Chris was really friendly and enthusiastic but his English tends to become non-understandable at times when he starts to get too enthusiastic and his speech can go on for quite long holding up everyone in the bus. The driversorry i forgot the name was really helpful and nice too. Good that the driver really knows where to bring us for the best photo spots. Overall a value for money tour.

This is an excellent tour. Vasilis, our tour guide was great. I highly recommend this tour. My only advise is to visit as many monasteries as you can at your own, because you only going to have the chance to see the inside of St. Stephen's monastery during the tour.

Wonderful tour, excellent service, highly recommended! I am the only visitor that day! They still conducted the tour, very trustworthy. Rich knowledge about the history in the area, the 4 hours are full of fun. Not only visted monasteries and historical sites before the monasteries, but also showed me the top spots to take great photos - even help take photo of me. It made my day in Meteora.
