Overview

Sumo is a Japanese style of full-contact wrestling that requires immense strength and skill. Few travelers are lucky enough to see behind the scenes of a sumo stable (training hall)—considered a sacred space. On this insightful tour, see behind the scenes and visit the sumo stable of Tatsunami-beya—accompanied by a National Government Licensed English Guide Interpreter—and watch sumo wrestlers train during morning practice. Better still, this sumo stable is home to an active Yokozuna, the highest rank in professional sumo. Afterwards, snap a picture with the wrestlers and shop exclusive mementoes.
  • A rare opportunity to see behind the scenes at a traditional Japanese sumo stable
  • Talking is prohibited while watching the practice, but an audio guide is available
  • Gain a deeper understanding of an ancient sport
  • When practice is finished, snap a photo with a sumo wrestler

Great to see top level wrestlers practice at their Stable

Jet_P, Feb 2026
The tour was well organized and informative. We had great seats and had a great view of the practice. We were able to meet and take pictures with the wrestlers at the end of practice, including yokozuna, Hōshōryū Tomokatsu. That was special.

Thoroughly recommended

This is a fascinating insight into sumo and felt like a real privilege to see the wrestlers going through their paces. It was well narrated by our host. Very informative. Thoroughly recommended.

Not what I expected

John_L, Oct 2025
If you enjoy going to the gym and watching guys work out, this is the tour for you. You sit in total silence while 6-8 sumo trainees do exercises. That’s it. Wish I’d found a sumo tour with a little more going on.

Response from Host, Oct 2025

Thank you for your valuable feedback. We regret the tour wasn't more engaging as you had hoped. Your comments are crucial for our improvement, and we are committed to enhancing our offerings. We hope to provide you with a more satisfying experience in the future.

Great sumo experience.

Sumo practice

Mihriban_K, Apr 2025
Watching the live practice was a great experience. It was amazing to see the wrestlers so close in front of us. The only drawback was the poor English of the guide and the audio devices they were using. We couldn’t understand what the guide had to say about the practice and the sumo wrestlers.
