Travelers seeking a glimpse of iconic Mt. Fuji are likely to pass through Shizuoka Prefecture, but further south, on deep Suruga Bay, is scenic Shizuoka City. While the mountain views are a major draw, and visitors should head to a viewpoint on a clear day, there are plenty of other things to do in Shizuoka City. The city was on the famous Tokaido Corridor connecting Tokyo and Kyoto and was once a center of feudal power. You can explore the remnants of this interesting history, among other attractions.
Shizuoka City is a year-round destination. Spring and fall are the most popular times to visit Japan because the weather is usually pleasant and dry. However, winter is an excellent time to visit Shizuoka City to see Mt. Fuji as the skies are clearest between November and March. You won’t be able to climb Mt. Fuji then, though, as the climbing season is July–September. Shizuoka City holds its traditional festival, Shizuoka Matsuri, in early April.
Shizuoka City is large but not enormous by Japanese standards, so it’s well-connected by trains and buses but not too overwhelming. The two main railway stations are Shizuoka Station (inland) and Shimizu Station (by the port), and buses also connect to these stations, which help you reach attractions that aren’t on the train lines. Make the most of the Nihondaira Ropeway (cable car) to reach a high plateau offering great Mt. Fuji views.
Shizuoka is famous for its green tea—around 40 percent of Japan’s crop is produced here. Tea aficionados, foodies, or anyone who enjoys a good cuppa should explore Shizuoka City’s tea attractions. The Tea Museum, in the city’s south, is a good place to begin. Also, visit scenic tea gardens on the hilly city outskirts to see tea growing and sample local varieties.
