Lots of ground covered- lots of walking. Very customizable. Atsuto adjusted our stops according to our preferences. He was very knowledgeable and a pleasure to spend the day with. Would recommend. Happily used the subway to get around and experience different parts of the city.

Extremely disappointing experience - I would not recommend this private Tokyo tour.
We booked a 6-hour private tour expecting an experienced guide who could help us understand Tokyo, plan the day efficiently, answer questions, recommend food and shopping, and make the most of our limited time in the city.
Instead, our guide told us that he had only become certified in October and that we were essentially his first tour. Unfortunately, that lack of experience showed throughout the entire day.
There appeared to be no meaningful preparation or itinerary. The guide was repeatedly using Google to figure out where to take us, how to get there, and what to do next. When we asked questions about Tokyo, restaurants, shopping, attractions, or recommendations, he often did not know the answers. We ended up searching for places ourselves and telling him where we wanted to go.
That completely defeats the purpose of paying for a private guided tour.
We lost a significant part of our limited time in Tokyo trying to work out the plan ourselves, missed things we had hoped to see, and learned very little about the places we actually visited.
I want to be fair about one thing: the guide himself was polite, sincere, and clearly trying very hard. This review is not about his attitude or effort. The problem is that the tour company assigned a brand-new, inexperienced guide to a paid private tour without the level of preparation, knowledge, or support that customers should reasonably expect.
What made the experience even more disappointing was the company’s response afterward. We explained the situation in detail and requested a refund because the service delivered was materially different from what we believed we had purchased. The request was declined.
A private guide should add knowledge, planning, local insight, and value that a visitor cannot easily obtain by simply searching Google. In our case, we ended up doing much of that work ourselves while paying for a six-hour guided experience.
For us, this was one of the most disappointing experiences of our Tokyo trip and not worth the money we paid.
Fabulous tour, our tour guide created the perfect tour for us. Kasei was incredibly knowledgeable and educated us on Japanese culture and history. I highly recommend this customized private tour. The sushi restaurant we were taken to was amazing! Wonderfully fun day.
Our guide, Kosuke, was a wonderful young man. He was punctual, personable, full of good information and very flexible with our itinerary. We packed a lot into our 8 hours. Kosuke has an excellent command of English. It was a 20,000 step day, which we thoroughly enjoyed. We traveled by subway between sights giving us a chance to sit and relax. It was a very fun day despite the rain. This tour is definitely to be recommended.

We both thoroughly enjoyed the tour. Our guide, Izumi, was really wonderful taking us to a number of significant sights, both of cultural and personal interest. Izumi was also very generous with his knowledge of Japanese etiquette and the Tokyo rail system which has assisted us during the remainder of our stay. We highly recommend Izumi as a guide.

Mai was so helpful! We signed up for a pre-described 4-hour tour, but in point of fact, we hadn't done sufficient research on our own to be specific about what we wanted to do on this, our first morning in Japan. As we talked, it became clear that one of the things we were most concerned about was figuring out how to navigate the transportation system. Mai was graceful and tactful in helping us figure out how best to use our scarce time with her -- which turned out to be visiting 3 iconic sites, by walking a lot and jumping on various trains to transport us to 3 disparate locations. Along with way, she was also very helpful as a tutor -- how to use Suica card, how to manage transportation w/ use of Google maps, using google translate -- and what about that Imperial Palace!

This is a good way to get a quick overview of several Tokyo highlights using and learning the public transportation system. Good luck without a guide if it’s your first time.!!! I suggest skipping the anime and add some historical cultural unless you want to experience current culture. Our young guide (21) Ikuto was very polite and spoke good English. He was able to share a youthful perspective with some good historical facts added.
A must do experience especially right when you get to Tokyo! Worth the money and then some- we did the 6 hour tour.

If you want an amazing introduction to the city of Tokyo, our family highly recommends this tour. The tour was highly customizable and our tour guide Hitomi gave us lots of additional tips and tricks along the way to help us for our remaining time in the city. We had an amazing 6-hour private tour of Tokyo with Zenji! He was polite, helpful, incredibly knowledgeable, and so much fun to spend the day with. He took us to a beautiful temple, the world’s busiest crossing, and the incredible fish market. Along the way, we enjoyed delicious sushi, Wagyu steak, mochi, and sake. He also helped us navigate Tokyo’s sophisticated train system, which made getting around so much easier. Zenji made our day in Tokyo truly memorable, and we highly recommend him to anyone visiting the city!

We LOVED the private half day tour! Our guide was warm, and personable, and made the tour perfect. Yuki connected via text to confirm pick up location, then we talked through the sites we wanted to see, he offered up details and other off the beaten path options for us to add in. Then we figured out the transportation routes based off where we wanted to be at the end of our tour and we were off! He was very attentive, and took time to share history, point out unique or local events that were fun to learn about. His English was so GOOD! We had a wonderful day and enjoyed visiting the Ueno area, which was a recommended stop from Yuki. It was wonderful, and has a lovely park, zoo and multiple museums to see, including the home of the national museum, which we are planning to visit later in our visit. Yuki made this experience so enjoyable and perfect for us.

Being a private tour, we were able to see a large number of sites. Our guide ensured my wife could have a good lunch in spite of her many allergies. But our guide was fairly quiet and shared minimal information. He would only add details when we asked questions and we usually didn’t know enough about the sites to ask the right questions. Be prepared to walk a LOT if you go on this tour. Hopefully other guides are better, more talkative

On the commentary, you are right that a guide should be offering the background rather than waiting to be asked, and that is the part of the day that fell short of what this tour should be. We are taking it up with the guide directly. On the walking, this is a walking tour and it does cover distance, but private transport can be arranged as an option with 48 hours' notice, and we would suggest that to anyone who would rather not be on their feet for the full day. Thank you for setting this out so clearly.
Atsuto was an amazing guide! His English was flawless and was able to answer all of our questions. I loved that we had input as to where we went and were able to be flexible if we saw something we were interested in. The day felt more like hanging out with a new friend who knows the area and all the cool spots rather than a traditional tour. We had a great day, would recommend!

We had an absolutely wonderful experience with Zenji during our 8 hour private tour of Tokyo! We were traveling with our two daughters, ages 6 and 7, and he was incredible with our entire family from beginning to end.
Zenji took us to so many amazing places and made the day feel fun, easy, and completely personalized. He was wonderful with our girls and kept them engaged and happy throughout the entire tour.

We met our guide Atsuto at our hotel in Asakusa. He was eager , polite and full of knowledge. Of we went on a train journey of Tokyo, to discover the best of the city! Kosuke was knowledgable, patient and helped us with navigating the trains. We packed a few sites into the four hour tour, including visiting gardens and the Meiji Shinto Shrine. He shared Japans history and changes over time!

We met with our guide at our hotel which was very helpful and we had chosen to use the suggested itinerary provided by Viator. Our guide was able to show us the trains and was informative at the sites we visited. He took us to a restaurant he knew, however the wait time for a seat for six was over 50 minutes which cut into our tour unnecessarily. We requested several times to leave and go elsewhere but he was adamant we should wait. This meant we missed out on the last 2-3 locations of our tour. Although our guide kindly offered to extend the tour to make up for it, we decided to finish. We are grateful for our kind guide but a long wait for lunch with a busy schedule should be reflected upon.

This is a great introduction to Tokyo and a solid option if you want to get oriented to the city in a short period of time. It's impossible to see all of Tokyo in one day, so use this as a beginning tour to help guide future adventures.
