I recommend starting early in the Tesla with Francisco to avoid the crowds. He asked our interests so we had a customized itinerary with plenty of walking, gardens, delicious pastries and lunch, and a variety of palaces. A superb day trip from Lisbon! So gorgeous! Francisco is a safe and knowledgable drive and patient and enthusiastic with all of our questions. Very kind and mellow soul.

We were able to see all we wanted to, including Pena Palace, Moorish Castle, National Palace, Quinta Regulaira, and even Monsereat. We were taken to the best restaurant in town, and, with our tour guides name, got a lovely table by a window with a view - lunch was excellent and inexpensive. We were taken in a Tesla, which was comfy and let us bypass most of the crowds, and our tour guide dropped us off and picked us up as efficiently as possible.
We had a great time, except our tour guide, Miguel, talked endlessly and loudly, with useless chatter and didn't actually listen to any of our questions or information, so we blew an opportunity to have a quality discussion about what we were seeing or more about Lisbon or Portugal. We'd happily do it again, but with a different driver.

I couldn't imagine a better guide than I had in Margarida for my Sintra tour! I was traveling solo and she took some of the best pictures from my entire trip to Portugal. She was knowledgeable and a great driver. I had the best day, which also happened to be my last day in Portugal. It was a fantastic way to end my trip!
Some things to know - the itinerary listed on Viator is ambitious. I had chosen his tour because I wanted to see it all, and it was the only one that listed everything I wanted to see. However, the reality of Sintra is that there is a lot of traffic and few places to park. It isn't very realistic to see the inside and outside of all of the places listed so I had to decide which were the most important. I missed out on one of the ones I wanted to see due to closing times, but I got to see most of what I went there to see. As for tickets, I chose to buy ahead of time the ones that are all day tickets and I bought the timed tickets day of. There should be enough tickets left for a time slot the driver can work around.
You can't go wrong with this tour!

Our best day in Portugal. Miguel Alvarez was our guide. He was absolutely the best guide we've ever had when traveling abroad.
Very knowledgeable on all sites, and on Portugal history. We felt very safe and saw all the sites important to us. He picked us up at our hotel and dropped us off there. The money spent was soooo well worth it, I wouldn't choose any other way. I will be recommending this tour - with Miguel to my friends who will be traveling later this year.

This was a waste of money. The "guide" and driver was supposed to go into places with us. He went with us into the Pena Palace but the information he provided was scant and not terribly interesting. In the afternoon at the Regleira he didnt go in even after we called him and asked him to join us since the navigation was difficult inside. In addition instead of dropping us off infant, he had us walking up a steep inclined road and again had to be asked to pick us up. Terrible guide and a waste of money.

Parking at Quinta da Regaleira is impossible, and that is why the driver did not accompany the tour.
Yes, the driver accompanied us on the tour of the other monuments and even offered a visit to Cabo da Roca, which was not included in the program.

We enjoyed our tour and Filipe was very knowledgeable about the history and cultural significance of all the places we visited. He also guided our tour in a manner that took into account our individual interests. Overall we had a great experience. We just wish he had more time to be with us as we toured each place ( versus just dropping us off and given instructions coz I think we’ll appreciate the tour more if he was walking with us ) but understand that the lack of parking in Sintra made that extremely difficult.

Francisco was a pleasure, very knowledgeable.
I felt this tour cost way too much and should not be considered a private tour. I almost felt like it was private car, not tour. We were on our own most of the time.

Best way to see Sintra and surrounding areas! We started our day off with Margarida! Lucky for us she was by our guide! We spent the rest of the day touring around with Margarida. With such ease. The roads and traffic are hard to navigate but Martina is a pro! The area is absolutely stunning from all angles. We also saw places we would not have seen on our own! Margarida also took many photos through out our tour. We are so happy that we had so many pictures with both my husband and I in them. Honestly the photos were taken with such thought and precision that they all turned out amazing! We can’t thank her enough for all the attention she gave us. We had the best day possible and we have the photos to prove it! By the end of our day we were dropped off at our hotel and said good bye to a new friend! The best day trip experience we’ve had! Great day out with a very friendly and chatty driver. We managed to visit all the places we wanted to go. Lots of walking involved but it was a great experience and would highly recommend rather than taking trains and busses. Don't forget to take the transfer at Pena Palace or it is a long walk uphill to the palace. Thank you to Philipe.

This is THE way for you to enjoy the 5 main sites of Sintra (Moorish Castle, Pena Palace, Sintra Palace, Quinta de Regaleira, Park and Palace of Monserrate) at your own pace. You even have time to enjoy Sintra for yummy pastries at Casa Piriquita and a tasty lunch at several available restaurants.
Our guide was Filipe and he was simply AMAZING. His passion for sharing his country's history, animated story telling, and his great sense of humor really helped you see beyond the physical beauty of these sites. He is prompt and incredibly efficient at getting you to and from each site.
I was a bit concerned at the price of the tour without any tickets included - but if you've been researching how to see the best of Sintra on your own, you know that private vehicles aren't permitted and even those few vehicles that are permitted, there is extremely limited parking. It is long, hilly hikes between some of the sites, and transportation is required if you want to reach them all. Wouldn't it be nice to have a friend grab you from your hotel, drop you off at each site with instructions on how to best see what you need to, and then pick you up to take you to the next one when you're ready - not necessarily when they are ready- telling you great stories and history along the way? IT IS WORTH IT!!! We were certainly tired when we got dropped off at the hotel!
As for the tickets, I chose to get 3 of them ahead of time (Moorish castle, Sintra Palace, Park and Palace of Monserrate) as they are "all day" tickets. The tickets for the Pena Palace and Regaleira are timed entry and I wanted the flexibility to ensure we weren't rushed to meet these entry times. This strategy worked well, but keep an eye on ticket availability online as these 2 venues are incredibly popular and they do sell very quickly.
This tour was just amazing! And if you're fortunate enough to get Filipe as your guide, you're not only going to learn an incredible amount about Portugal and Sintra's unique history and lore, you're also leaving Sintra with a new friend. He was GREAT!

Not sure if this was typical, but it is VERY crowded in Sintra. Long slow lines everywhere, especially Pena Palace. Unless you are really into 19th century furniture, it isn't worth the crowds. And the village is just touristy and commercial. There are some beautiful buildings and gardens in the area...but be prepared for hoardes of people.

Even though I had a terrible accident of falling backwards over a retaining wall my driver Jorge took me to the hospital and waited and translated for me. I ended up with a spinal compression injury. He took me to the special store to get a brace and then to the pharmacy to get medicine. He is such an angel. Even though the day wasn’t quite what I had planned I can’t say enough nice things about this caring person. I hope to come back another time and actually see Sintra. I’m sure he is a wonderful guide.

The tour was fun, but I am not sure if I would recommend hiring a tour guide to see Sintra. The tour guide did not come with us to the attractions because he could not get a parking spot. So the tour guide's job was mainly to drive us around. But here is the problem: the tour guide drove the narrow and curvy streets in a way that made me uncomfortable. He even scratched a parked vehicle despite us shouting that his car does not fit and once we heard the scratching sound he kept on driving, pushing away the parket vehicle.

About driving the driver has already been scolded and I hope it doesn't happen again my sincere apologies for his discomfort.

Felix was very nice and friendly. Excellent English. 37 min late, very little knowledge of history, so it wasn't a historically guided tour. Not easy to get parking so basically we did our own tour. He only came in to our last stop, Monserrate. Friendly and personally but I wouldn't consider him a tour guide as I said before very limited knowledge on any of the places we went to, he's familiar with it. So do your homework and reading about history of Pena palace, Moorish Castle, Center of Sintra and Regaleira. - met a woman @toursbyana during our self guided tour who knows so much about the history of Portugal and each place. Best to contact her. Felix was a great driver and super nice and friendly, but don't expect a guided tour as he doesn't even go inside with you and knowledge is not even basic

As the owner of the company, I apologize for Filipe's delay at the beginning of the tour, usually when it happens we compensate at the end of the tour.
As you saw in Sintra, it is not easy to find parking for the car and when that happens the driver does not accompany the visit, he has to stay in the car.
Filipe is not an official guide but he has a great knowledge of the history of Sintra and its monuments, which can be confirmed by Filipe's assessments.
The official guides come with large groups, because to hire an official guide the price is €250.
