A great tour with our guide Andre. 6 1/2 hours of walking and information regarding Pompeii & Herculaneum. Andre gave ample water breaks and washroom breaks in the 27 degree heat. Wear good walking shoes on this tour, the cobble stones of Pompeii and Herculaneum are unforgiving with approximately 15,000 footsteps according to an Apple Watch.

Great Tour

Justin_B, May 2026
This tour was fantastic. They picked me up in Naples and drove me to Pompeii where we met our guide. Andrea was very knowledgeable and passionate about the history and daily lives of the people of Pompeii, which helped to make the ruins feel lived in instead of just the ruins of an archeological site. We then hopped on a bus to Herculaneum where we explored the ruins and water systems of the residents. Afterwards they dropped me back off in Naples. All in all it took about 6.5 hours and was well worth the money.

History was great, tour experience disappointing

Sarah_W, May 2026
It was definitely interesting to visit Pompeii and Herculaneum and our guide was somewhat knowledgeable. However, much of the time was spent standing around and waiting. Only 2-3 hours out of the 6 were spent learning. At Pompeii, we arrived to the site around 10:30. Then we were told to wait until 11. Then at 11 we had to get headsets and our guide disappeared to get tickets for 20 minutes, leaving us to stand in the hot sun. So before the tour even began, we had been standing outside in the sun for a full hour. Once inside, everything was so crowded it was a bit difficult to enjoy. We only saw a tiny fraction of Pompeii (basically the main road) and the tour wrapped at 1:15, at which point we had to sprint to make it to a bathroom and pick up a sandwich to take with us for the next shuttle leaving at 1:45. There was zero time allotted for lunch. Herculaneum was cool to see, but again we spent most of the time standing in the sun as opposed to walking around and seeing the city. I had expected a more personal experience. Instead, this was a generic walk-through and the “private transport” was just a shuttle service. Would recommend to anyone just go to the sites and do an audio tour.

Dear Guest, Thank you for sharing your feedback and for visiting Pompeii and Herculaneum with us. We are pleased to hear that you found both archaeological sites interesting and worthwhile experiences, as they remain among the most extraordinary historical destinations anywhere in the world. We would however like to clarify a few important details for future travelers considering this experience. This tour was specifically designed as a small-group archaeological experience combining both Pompeii and Herculaneum in a single day with expert guides and organized transportation between the sites. Due to the enormous popularity of Pompeii — one of the most visited archaeological sites in Europe — entrance procedures, headset distribution, security checks, ticket collection, and group coordination can occasionally require additional waiting time, particularly during busy periods and under high visitor volumes. While we completely understand that waiting in warm weather can feel tiring, these procedures are often necessary in order to ensure smooth access and organization for all guests before entering such a vast UNESCO World Heritage Site. Most importantly, we are very pleased to hear that you still appreciated the history and archaeological significance of both Pompeii and Herculaneum. This experience was created for travelers who wish to explore two of the world’s most important ancient Roman cities in one carefully organized itinerary led by expert archaeologists capable of bringing Ancient Rome vividly back to life through storytelling, historical context, and archaeological insight. Pompeii alone covers an enormous archaeological area extending far beyond what could realistically be explored in a single visit. For this reason, expert guides carefully select the most historically significant highlights, monuments, villas, streets, temples, frescoes, and preserved areas in order to provide guests with the most meaningful and engaging experience possible within the available time. Likewise, Herculaneum offers a completely different perspective of ancient Roman life, with remarkably preserved structures, woodwork, mosaics, and intimate details of daily life rarely found anywhere else in the ancient world. Many travelers specifically appreciate the convenience of experiencing both sites in one seamless day with transportation, expert guidance, logistics coordination, and curated itineraries already fully organized for them. At the same time, we fully respect that every traveler has a different preferred travel style — some guests enjoy independent exploration at their own pace, while others prefer the structure, storytelling, and deeper historical understanding provided by guided archaeological experiences. We sincerely appreciate your feedback and are grateful for the opportunity to share these extraordinary places with travelers from around the world. For travelers looking to discover Pompeii and Herculaneum with expert archaeologists, immersive storytelling, and carefully designed itineraries that bring Ancient Rome to life, we would be delighted to welcome you to Italy with Mondo Guide. Fantastic day in Pompei and Herculaneum

joannenagano, May 2026
We had a wonderful excursion to Pompei and Herculaneum with Manuela. She was an efficient, knowledgeable and highly personable guide who took care of our group very capably, guiding us through the sites and navigating the crowds to ensure that we saw the planned sites. She was humorous and informative, making the sites come alive with her explanations of daily life and the catastrophic eruption of Vesuvius. We enjoyed the tour and felt that we learned a lot about Roman life.

Response from Host, May 2026

Dear Guest, Thank you for your review and for your kind words about both your Pompeii and Herculaneum archaeologist guides. We are delighted to hear that you found them excellent, knowledgeable, and passionate throughout the experience. We would however like to clarify a small detail for future travelers reading this review. Pompeii is one of the most visited archaeological sites in the world and, particularly during busy periods, entrance procedures, security checks, ticket validations, and guest coordination can occasionally require additional time before tours begin. While we completely understand that waiting is never ideal, these brief delays are sometimes necessary to ensure the experience is properly organized for all guests before entering such an extraordinary and complex archaeological site. Most importantly, we are very pleased to hear that once the tour began, both experiences met your expectations and that the quality of the guides stood out during the day. This tour was specifically designed for travelers who want far more than a standard visit. Exploring Pompeii and Herculaneum with expert archaeologists allows guests to truly understand how Ancient Rome once lived, worked, worshipped, and evolved before the eruption of Mount Vesuvius changed history forever. From ancient streets and preserved villas to temples, theaters, frescoes, and daily life frozen in time, these sites become dramatically more meaningful when experienced through the storytelling and expertise of passionate archaeologists. We are proud that thousands of travelers choose our experiences each year specifically for the quality of our guides and the depth of the experience we provide throughout Southern Italy. We truly appreciate your feedback and hope to welcome you again for another unforgettable journey through Italy’s history, culture, and beauty. Mondo Guide +39 331 708 0962 www.mondoguide.com

Buyer be aware!

JIALE_D, Mar 2026
Do not take this tour. According to tour instruction, we are supposed to return to where tour started. They left us stranded at a different city after the tour was finished. It took us over 6 hours to get back to where our car was parked (the tour starting point). Viator doesn't take care of customers. Neither does they take responsibility.

Response from Host, Mar 2026

Dear Jerry, Thank you for your feedback, and we are sorry to hear that your experience did not meet your expectations. We are also sorry that this review was written only because you did not carefully read the selected option at the time of booking. The option selected in this case — Option from Pompeii — clearly and explicitly includes one-way transportation from Pompeii to Herculaneum, together with guided tours in both sites and entry tickets, as stated in the tour description at the time of booking. For clarity to future travelers, this experience is designed with multiple booking options, each with a specific starting point and transportation structure. The available options are clearly listed on Viator and as follows: Round-trip transportation to/from Naples (Option from Naples) Round-trip transportation to/from Sorrento (Option from Sorrento) One-way transportation from Pompeii to Herculaneum (Option from Pompeii) Train tickets from Rome to Naples + transportation from Naples (Option from Rome) In addition, Herculaneum is located a short distance from Pompeii, and it is easy to return to Pompeii by taxi . We recommend reviewing the selected option carefully before booking, as each experience is structured to match different travel plans with full transparency. Our team remains available at any time to assist and ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for all our guests. Kind regards,

Great Tour of Pompeii and Herculan

It’s very full on. There are only a few breaks, a packed lunch is useful. The tour gives you a greater understanding of the towns before the disaster and brings Pompei and Herculaneum to life.
