Itinerary

Start your day trip with a pickup from central Naples.

Once on the coach, travel inland, away from the coast to the ancient city of Pompeii. Famous as the city that lay buried beneath mounds of volcanic ash after the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius, Pompeii today is one of Italy’s largest—and best preserved—complex of ruins.

See its highlights on a guided tour with a guide, and wander through the historic streets to see old Roman baths, villas, and forums.

Leave Pompeii after your tour, and head onward to Mt. Vesuvius, traveling to an altitude of 3,280 feet (1,000 meters). How you spend your time at the crater is up to you; a local mountain guide is on hand, should you want a guided tour at your own expense.

Later, return to Naples with your group, and finish with a drop-off at the start point.

Must book!

Ivo_G, May 2026
Best guided tour I have ever been. Roberta really made Pompei and Vezuvius come to life. The bus driver Andrea drove us safely and calmly to both locations.

Could not have been better!

KIM_N, Apr 2026
We have wanted to visit Pompeii for quite some time and the visit did not disappoint. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and relayed the info in a very interesting manner. The hike to the top of Mt. V was great!! We felt like we were in good hands the entire tour. Highly recommend!

Response from Host, Apr 2026

Dear Traveler, Thank you for such a nice review! We are so happy to hear that after waiting to visit Pompeii, the experience lived up to your expectations! It is wonderful to know that our guide succeeded in making all that history come alive for you in such an engaging way. There is nothing quite like the thrill of standing at the top of Mt. Vesuvius, and we are glad you felt safe and "in good hands" with us the whole time. Thank you for choosing us for such a long-awaited bucket list trip: your high recommendation means the world to our team! See you on your next adventure, Kind regards The IAMME IA! Gray Line Team

Response from Host, Apr 2026

Dear Traveler, Thank you for such a vibrant review! We are so happy to hear that we exceeded your expectations. It is wonderful to know that Martina made Pompeii fun and that Roberta kept the energy high on the bus: they are both experts at making sure the journey is just as enjoyable as the destination! The hike up Mt. Vesuvius is definitely a workout, but we agree that the breathtaking views from the crater make every step worth it. We're glad it kept you energized for the rest of the day! Thank you for choosing us, and we hope to see you again for more adventures! Kind regards, The IAMME IA! Gray Line Team

Day in the past

Darya_K, Apr 2026
Easy to find host, she has a red flag at the end of stick. Good pick up location, easy to get to and very visible. Good pace, easy to understand the English. Great guides. The restaurant they stop for at lunch is very good. Fantastic view and you can have an all inclusive meal with starter, pasta main, desert, water and wine (20euros in 2026) or you can do your own thing. We really had a good tour of pompei. Went there first and it wasn't as crowded. We went in April and couldn't see the theater because it was already being set up for summer performances but the guide showed us pictures on his phone of the venue in action. A lot of walking but not too bad. I am a bigger girl and I made it up the volcano in an hour. Wear good shoes, going down is very slippery. 10 out of 10 would recomend.

Response from Host, Apr 2026

Dear Traveler, Thank you so much for the 10/10 recommendation! We are so happy that you found the meeting point easily and enjoyed the pace of our tour. A huge congratulations on reaching the top of the volcano: that is a fantastic achievement! While the tour itself does not include lunch, we always love providing different options to make your day even more enjoyable and convenient. We are so glad you liked the restaurant and the views. We appreciate your helpful tips and truly hope to welcome you back again soon! Kind regards The IAMME IA! Gray Line Team

Dear Traveler, Thank you so much for your "6-star" review! We are so happy to hear that everything ran smoothly from start to finish. We truly value having Roberta on our team; she is a fantastic guide and we are so glad her friendly approach made such an impact on your trip. Congratulations on conquering the climb to the summit of Mount Vesuvius! It is certainly a challenge, but those breathtaking views make it all worth it. We are also happy you enjoyed the historical wonders of Pompeii. Thank you for choosing us for such a memorable day. We would love to welcome you back for another adventure whenever you are ready! Warm regards, The IAMME IA! Gray Line Team

Perfectly organised excursion

Nora_P, Mar 2026
It was very well organised and everything worked out perfectly! The guide in pompei was very knowledgeable and we had a great day! We appreciated the possibility of not returning to Naples but continuing our journey towards the coast from mt vesuvio.

Response from Host, Mar 2026

Dear Traveler, Thank you for your kind feedback! We are so pleased to hear that your tour was perfectly organized and that you found our Pompeii guide knowledgeable. It is great to know that our flexible drop-off service allowed you to continue your journey toward the coast seamlessly. Not to miss experience

MariaEdna_C, Mar 2026
Great to visit a city buried for centuries from volcanic erupties and now a lot to tell about how it was before and the legacy it left behind.

Response from Host, Mar 2026

Dear Traveler, Thank you for your kind words. It truly is a profound experience to explore the history and legacy of a city frozen in time. We are so glad we could share this journey with you, and we hope you will join us again soon to discover even more of the incredible wonders our region has to offer! Warm regards, the IAMME IA! Gray Line Team

Great, but more solo time would be good.

Anthony_D, Mar 2026
Overall, my family and I were pleased, however, we would’ve liked to have had some free time to explore on our own. Maybe one hour guided and one hour on our own. The staff was friendly and helpful.

Response from Host, Mar 2026

Dear Traveler, Thank you for your valuable feedback. We are pleased to hear that your family enjoyed the service provided by our team. Regarding your suggestion, we aim to offer the most efficient experience possible by dedicating the time in Pompeii to a comprehensive guided tour. This ensures our guests cover all the essential historical highlights. We then provide ample free time at Mount Vesuvius, allowing you to explore the crater at your own pace. We appreciate your comments as they help us refine our tours, and we hope to welcome you back in the future. Best regards, IAMME IA! Gray Line Team

It was a good, quick...

Jennifer_G, Dec 2025
It was a good, quick overview of Pompeii. I was disappointed that the guide skipped the Lupanar (brothel) although it was mentioned in the “what to expect” part of the full itinerary. Because of weather, our second (independent ) day in Pompei was last week and I purposely didn’t go here because I thought it was part of this guided tour. Having read “The Wolf Den” trilogy, I was looking forward to seeing this particularly.

Response from Host, Jan 2026

Dear Traveler, Thank you so much for your feedback! We’re so glad you enjoyed the tour, though we’re truly sorry to hear you missed out on the Lupanar, especially being a fan of The Wolf Den trilogy! While the itinerary online shows our standard route, our guides sometimes tailor the walk to ensure the best experience for everyone. That day, to avoid a very long queue and keep the tour comfortable for the children in the group, the guide chose to skip the wait and show you the fascinating northern area currently under restoration instead. We really appreciate your understanding and would love to have you back with us for another adventure soon! Warm regards IAMME IA! Gray Line Team

joseph_C, Nov 2025
It was awesome a must do when u visit Napoli highly recommended it staff very friendly hiking up 200 kilometers to get to the crater.

Great guides, weather made it very unpleasant

Erin_S, Nov 2025
I want to first say our guides were very nice and informative and this is nothing against them or their ability to conduct a tour. I had very high hopes for this experience and the Pompeii exhibit was very interesting however I highly recommend canceling if it is supposed to rain. We had umbrellas, ponchos and rain jackets and were absolutely soaked. Our clothes, shoes, etc. This tour is entirely outside and there is no cover from the rain. Trying to walk around with other tourists who are bumping umbrellas is very difficult and the puddles accumulate very quickly. The weather also canceled our visit to Mt. Vesuvius, but we did not know that until after we drove an hour up the mountain. We did get reimbursed within a few days and the tour guide was very apologetic. I recommend to all travelers to check the weather forecast before booking the tour.

Guided tour of Pompeii

Wonderful, informative, well paced tour from Roberta our tour guide who was excellent and very knowledgeable. I would definitely recommend this tour to friends.

Highly recommend

Michelle_V, Oct 2025
Roberta was the best guide. Her insights on the tour were exceptional. Very easy meeting spot. The pre arranged lunch was efficient and delicious. Highly recommend!

Response from Host, Oct 2025

Dear Traveler, Thank you for the fantastic review! We're absolutely delighted to hear that you had an exceptional experience. We'll be sure to pass on your high praise to Roberta—we agree her insights are exceptional! It's also great to know you found the meeting spot easy and enjoyed the efficient and delicious pre-arranged lunch. Your recommendation means the world to us. We look forward to welcoming you back again soon!

The tour is great but the...

Carolyn_N, Oct 2025
The tour is great but the group is too large to keep together, especially in a crowded area. Our guide, Isabella, did an awesome job waiting for everyone to catch up and to see various sites at Pompeii. We missed some sites on the itinerary because there were too many other groups in the area, but we saw others that weren’t scheduled. Isabella was excellent at explaining what we were seeing and adding depth to the discussion. I can’t really review the Vesuvius part of the tour as the weather didn’t cooperate so we didn’t see anything. But we had the opportunity to walk up to the crater.

Pompeii and Versu ius

Allen_B, Oct 2025
Tours are very time specific and are not altered based on individual delays. However, when we experienced delays in meeting our tour group ( due to canceled and late trains to meeting point) the company was very responsive and communicative to our questions and attempts to catch up with the tour when we were able to join. The company coordinated the meeting point and kept in communication with us to the extent possible to follow up with our joining the group! Additionally, Roberta, the tour guide, was welcoming, informative, and extremely knowledgable for the part of the tour we were able to be present for!

Great historical attraction

John_C, Oct 2025
Excellent! The tour was well organized from the meeting point to the end of the tour. Our tour guide was very informative. At the end of the tour of Pompeii we had time for a tasty lunch at the restaurant at the site. We were quickly seated in a reserved section for our tour group. Pompeii is a do not miss historical attraction. Our tour also included a visit to Mount Vesuvius. However, the weather changed from hot and sunny while touring Pompeii to very foggy and rain. We did drive to the site of Mount Vesuvius but it was closed for safety reasons. A disappointment but it was due to nature and not anyone's fault. We were quickly reimbursed part of the tour price.

Looking back and looking down on Napoli.

George_V, Oct 2025
Pick up and drop off from outside Napoli Centrale Train station worked al for a 8 tour of Pompei Ruins (very crowded) and delivery to Vesuvius base for coaches and access to a walking climb to photograph into the Volcano and the surrounding seascapes and Napoli from a great vantage point.

Great Pompeii Guide! Great Vesuvius Hike!

Ann_D, Oct 2025
Roberta is a great guide—informed, knowledgeable, energetic. The bit about skipping the line? She really made that happen, in part by making sure we were among the first (if not THE first) tour group(s) to arrive. She helped us imagine what life was like for the Pompeians. Where they bought their fast food, how their forum was organized, how they lived in general. We loved the unguided Vesuvius hike. I have always wanted to peer down into the funnel of a volcano, a quiescent one anyway. The first half-mile of the hike is steeper than the typical hairpin trail; the rest of the trail is gentler. While there are two snack shops on the trail, there are facilities only at the base. The best views are at the end of the trail, but all the views—the Bay of Naples, the mountain ridge across the valley, the first glimpse into the volcano—are great. One of the hikers was late returning to the bus. You better believe Roberta wouldn’t let the bus leave without that hiker. She searched until she found the person.

Stare down at the crater

Shuktara_S, Oct 2025
The hike was not the easiest but you can go at your own pace. I saw people of all ages and various levels of fitness doing it. I took my time and did it.

FOMO - felt like I was in class on Pompei. Mt V. - worth the climb!

Renee, Oct 2025
Pompei is vast and if you’re the type who wants to see more and not stand to listen to the guide half the time, this is not for you. With only 2 hours (or less) the FOMO is real as you’re standing just listening to the history when we could have walked and talked. Guide explained her intent was to give you the background so that you can go back another day to see the rest of the 2/3 (yes, the tour barely covered 1/3) and understand what you’re looking at. MT Vesuvius was a nice climb. Guide did not accompany to the top, wasn’t necessary tho. It takes about 30 min with a couple of short stops to catch our breaths, quickly snap a couple of pictures and rush down. Only allocated about an hour at MV. Bus ride was comfortable and tour coordinator is very nice and took good care of the 30+ ppl in our group. Lunch stop is over priced, so see if you can opt of of the set menu and order on your own. We fell for the set menu €18 and it wasn’t really worth it

Response from Host, Oct 2025

Dear Traveler, thank you for sharing your thoughts. We completely understand that Pompeii can leave you wanting more: and that’s exactly the point. With over 66 hectares of archaeological ruins, it's simply not possible to cover everything in a short visit. Our tour is designed to give guests a carefully curated introduction to the most significant areas, providing the historical context and key insights that allow you to understand and appreciate what you're seeing, rather than just walking through the site without meaning. The guide’s goal is not only to show you a few highlights but to equip you with the background knowledge that will make any future visit, whether self-guided or otherwise, far more meaningful. As for Mt. Vesuvius, we’re glad you enjoyed the climb! While the guide does not accompany the group to the crater, the experience speaks for itself, and we aim to balance structure with flexibility throughout the tour. Thank you again for your feedback; we always strive to improve while remaining faithful to our goal: offering an informative, comfortable, and enriching experience within the time available. Kind regards The IAMME IA! Gray line Team

Exciting climb up Mt. Vesuvius

Carmen_V, Oct 2025
Our tour of the Pompeii ruins and the climb up Mt. Vesuvius was an unforgettable experience! Roberta was a terrific guide, very knowledgeable and informative. The buses were clean, everything was on time, and we enjoyed our stop at the restaurant/rest stop along the way. Highly recommend!!! Viator has always been reliable for me.

Don’t pay for skip the line!

Mary_M, Oct 2025
We paid for skip the line access but our guide took us to the back of the line with all the others that did not pay extra for skip the line. When I asked he said no one skips the line!!! He was not a very good guide !

Roberta’s a Rockstar!

Robert_M, Oct 2025
Roberta (not Rebecca) was our guide. She kept the tour on time even with a few hiccups throughout the day. The entire trip was very knowledgeable and I would recommend to anyone traveling by themselves, with a partner, group or even a family (including children). Really great job/time!

Response from Host, Oct 2025

Dear Traveler, thank you for your wonderful review! Roberta will be happy to hear she kept the tour on track and made the day enjoyable. We’re so glad you found the trip informative and suitable for all kinds of travelers. We’d love to welcome you back anytime for more memorable journeys! Kind regards The IAMME IA! Gray line Team

Great tour but group to large

Jessica_R, Sep 2025
Overall the experience was good. We had Roberta as a guide who was great. One complaint is that the tour group was to large. As Roberta was explaining things if you were in the back of the line you couldn’t see what she was explaining. Hard to see monuments with such a large tour group.

Response from Host, Oct 2025

Dear Traveler, thank you so much for your feedback! We’re happy to hear you enjoyed the tour with Roberta. We understand that in larger groups it can sometimes be tricky to see everything perfectly. Please know that our group sizes are carefully kept within the official guidelines of the archaeological site to ensure both a great experience and preservation of this incredible place. We truly appreciate your understanding and hope to welcome you again for another wonderful visit! Kind regards The IAMME IA! Gray line Team

Skip-the-Line Pompeii & Mt. Vesuvius

Vince_S, Sep 2025
You must take this tour. Pompeii is impressive and you cannot beat the view on top of Mt. Vesuvius. Getting an eyes on view of the crater and lava fields from eruptions is an essential. The guides were top-notch as well.

Excellent trip!

Adela_D, Sep 2025
Great experience, lots of history explained! Had a great driver Lelo at Vesuvius! Angie was great! Did the combination trip of Pompey and Vesuvius! Well worth it!

Confused…Viator as World Tours?

Rachel_C, Sep 2025
We were at the pickup destination at the Star Hotel Terminus but they left us! It was very chaotic there as there’s no clear sign of the tour group. We didn’t see Viator sign but later found out that most of them were World Tours only to find out that they cater to Viator customers! We found this out when we left for the next tour the next day to Sorrento, Positano and Amalfi Coast. Now that one is a wonderful experience! We booked thru Viator as well for that tour but World Tours picked us up. I am not sure if they changed their name but no one recognized Viator when I showed my voucher when we were leaving for Pompeii and Mt Vesuvius. That left me confused! I like Viator and will continue to be their patron but was clearly disappointed on this one. My sister and I went to see Pompeii on our own because we don’t want to ruin our day by not going anywhere that day. At any rate, I have to leave 1 star on this review as I cannot post this unless I pick a star.

Response from Host, Oct 2025

Dear Traveler, thank you for sharing your experience, and we’re sorry to hear about the confusion at the pickup. We want to assure you that our guides are always clearly identifiable, and our meeting points are well communicated ahead of time to avoid any misunderstandings. Additionally, we are reachable at our support number throughout the tour to assist with any questions or concerns and to offer help resolving any issues quickly. We truly regret that this caused frustration and appreciate your feedback as it helps us improve. We hope to have the opportunity to provide you with a seamless and enjoyable experience in the future. Kind regards The IAMME IA Gray Line Team

Great way to see Pompeii

Mikaela_B, Sep 2025
Great way to see Pompeii as it is much larger than you would anticipate. It was helpful having a historian walk around with you to point certain things out and describe the importance and meaning. Highly recommend.

Response from Host, Sep 2025

Dear Traveler, thank you so much for your kind words. We're glad you enjoyed your visit to Pompeii: it is indeed an impressive and expansive site! Having a knowledgeable guide can really bring the history to life, and we're happy to hear it made a difference for you. Thank you for the recommendation! Kind regards The IAMME IA! Gray line team
