Naples/Pompeii shore excursion

Susan_R, Sep 2024
Our guide, Elisa was wonderful and her presentation during Pompeii was entertaining and informative. She did a great job navigating us through an extremely crowded and chaotic visit as there were many ships in port that day. The tour was booked as a half day and your literature said it would end at 1:00 pm but didn't end until close to 2:30 pm. (Fortunately, not a problem for us. Naples was extremely congested as it was raining and there was a police incident blocking the road.) Elisa also has so much knowledge of Naples it made an otherwise dreary, slow, bumpy ride (no one's fault) worthwhile.

Amazing

Nancy_M, Apr 2024
Maria our guide was wonderful. We toured Naples with a few stops. She told us about the history. Unfortunately I personally found Naples to be a dirty city. After that we headed to Pompeii which is absolutely incredible. To see buildings built over 2000 years and preserved after the volcanic eruption in 79 AD is mind blowing

Excellent

Mike_M, Apr 2024
It was just like it was posted about. I'm on a cruise ship and viator is almost 1/2 the price of the same tour. Trying to sign up in Athens now but having problems with web page.

Outstanding

Charles_R, Dec 2023
See the East and West portions of the sea and city was amazing. Pompeii was very enlightening and amazing part of history.

Pompeii was fantastic

Karen_M, Nov 2023
Naples isn't an attractive city, full of graffiti and crazy drivers and pedestrians. However the pick up and tour were very well organized. The tour guide made Pompeii come alive. The hike around Pompeii was strenuous but the guide took great care and paid close attention to all the participants. Wish there was more free time.

Interesting, informative...

Kimberly_S, Oct 2023
Interesting, informative but lots of walking. Didn’t like the fact that we changed guides in the middle of tour.

Great tour guide put pick-up was disorganized

AnnaMaria_H, Oct 2023
Maria was a knowledgeable tour guide. She was very informative, especially regarding Pompeii. My issue is with the pick-up process. The dock area had too many tour operators and we would have appreciated a VIATOR sign displayed prominently so that we can locate our tour rep. It was very stressful looking for our contact amid hundreds of passengers who disembarked from the cruise ship at the same time. Once in the van, we drove about 20 minutes before the driver picked up our tour guide at the first attraction. We would have appreciated having the tour guide greet us at the port and explain the tour at the outset.

The initial pick up was...

Steve_C, Sep 2023
The initial pick up was dead on time but then there was a period of about 20 minutes whilst we were sorted into different language groups. Again upon reaching Pompeii there was a little confusion. However, our guide was excellent and we had a wonderful tour. Pompeii is amazing - so large and well preserved. Don’t miss it.

So so tour to Pompeii

Rebecca_L, Sep 2023
I had a half day city tour and visit to the ruins of Pompeii. We were picked up at the Cruise ship terminal at 8AM and whisked off, without an explanation, to a street in Naples. We waited on the bus on this street until finally another tour bus arrived and we were told that the English speakers were to change to the other bus. Little explanation was provided by our guide Maria as to the plan. We had to ask her what the plan for the day was and she begrudging told us bits and pieces. City tour was only so so, very little description of what we were seeing and not great views. More people arrived for the tour during the bus ride when finally more explanation was given for the plan for the day. We finally arrived at Pompeii One at 11 AM; the tour guide was more engaged at Pompeii but once again we waited around for 30 minutes prior and 40 minutes after the tour. Our half day tour in the end was 6 & 1/2 hours, longer than I expected and this was due to all the waiting and picking up more people along the way. One couple was to take the full day tour but cancelled the 2nd half of their tour as we were so late in arriving at Pompeii; they were afraid they would miss the ships departure. I am glad I got to Pompeii but was disappointed in the mechanics of the tour. It was not fluid and there was a lot of wasted time.

Chaotic

Toni_K, Sep 2023
Getting to the tour was chaotic. We had to ride one van then transfer to another one. The guides were not friendly, at all. Once we got to Pompeii, you had to speed walk to keep up with the guide, as she didn’t look back for the group. The tour itself was good and the guide was knowledgeable. Leaving and getting to our bus was chaotic, as they divided groups since some were booked for additional time. Again, the guides acted like they’d never done it before. If you have any mobility issues, this is NOT your tour.

They don’t help the handicapped

Ellise_D, Jul 2023
The tour itself would have been fine but they left my handicapped husband stranded when we stopped to get pastries and they wouldn’t go back and get him. The tour guide was rude and unaccommodating and we were forced to leave the tour and take a taxi back to the ship, I have already requested a full refund and sent a note about her rude attitude.

Great tour of Pompeii

Lynda_H, Jun 2023
I've given this tour a 5 star review as the actual tour of Naples and Pompeii were excellent so the problems we had should not bring the rating down as it was nothing to do with the actual guide. The problem we had was that a taxi driver was supposed to collect us from the cruise port and drop us off at a meeting point where we would join up with another 10 or 12 guests. The taxi driver wasn't there on time, albeit he was only about 7 or 8 minutes late, but it was enough to make our tour start in chaos. We were there before the 8am meeting time, looking round the numerous name signs which the drivers hold up. When we couldn't find our name we began to think we were in the wrong spot. Luckily we hung around and sent a message via the Viator app to the tour company to ask if we were at the correct meeting place. When the taxi driver did turn up he had our name scrawled in small letters on a bit of paper which he wasn't even holding up so you could read it as he was busy checking his phone. There were 2 other guests to be picked up from our cruise ship but they were nowhere to be seen. It later transpired that they had got off the ship at 0730 so by the time 8am came round they thought they were in the wrong meeting place so wandered off along the road to where other cruise ships were docked. I feel that had the taxi driver been on time, or early as they usually seem to be, then the tour would have got off to a great start. If you are booking I would suggest letting them know the name of your ship. Our meeting point was directly outside the gates of the port... just wait there and the driver will find you... don't be tempted to wander off! We finally joined the rest of the group at about 9am outside a church in the middle of Naples. From then on the tour was excellent, albeit a bit rushed due to us joining late. The guide was excellent - I can't remember her name but she had brown very curly hair and a peach umbrella so I hope the tour company gives her some credit as she was really very good. Pompeii was amazing - I have been before but it is still as interesting as last time, probably more so as our guide seemed to tell us even more than the one years ago did. If you haven't been to Pompeii you really should go - you have to see it to believe it. Please don't let my taxi driver story put you off booking this trip as it was probably a one-off. In hindsight I think the taxi driver was probably having some sort of personal drama going on as his mind didn't seem on it and he was checking his phone a lot. The actual tour, when we joined it, was excellent.

Great excursion

Sharonpwebb, May 2023
Great excursion. Loved Pompeii but probably need a full day there. Elisa was very informative and helpful

Hearding Cats

Richard_C, May 2023
This was supposed to be pick up and drop off. Pick up was unorganized and late. Tour through city was drive by, and the one quick stop in a plaza. The bakery Gambrinus" they took us to was spectacular! Then they picked up more people. This small tour then swelled to 30. Once at Pompeii the tour was good, although chaotic to start between headsets, getting tickets and getting in. We finished up with time to shop.. we ate pizza at the sit down restaurant Suisse Pompeii and the pizza was a real Napoli pizza that was amazing!! The guide then just dropped us off told us we would be going on a bigger bus.... this was horrible They combined like 3 different tours, new guide and hearded cats for 30 - 40 minutes trying to find everyone as they put 50 people on a bus to go back to Port. I booked pick up drop off and wanted to be dropped off in the city (and had that in my reservation) this was not possible and with all the wasted time between the start and ending confusion I was not able to do what I should have had plenty of time for.... was the tour good w what we saw and did, yes. Was the tour on time, what was described as transportation and time, NO.

Response from Host, May 2023

Dear customer on high season groups are large and we use many vehicles to pick everybody up, it is normal. Regards

Naples city and Pompeii

Elaine_F, Nov 2022
The Naples tour was absolutely excellent. I was very moved by the cathedral and so glad I saw it. The stop to see the fantastic view was great. The Palace area was interesting. I loved the coffee and bakery! Pompeii was good, however, our guide, while quite knowledgeable, seemed rushed. I felt I was left behind at points, which was a little scary.

A Great Experience

Lauren_M, Sep 2022
Our tour guide, Maria, was very knowledgeable and gave us lots of time to explore Naples and Pompeii. There was a lot of time spent combining and getting groups together, but once the tour started it was great. We were met right off the cruise ship and we’re brought right back to the port. Our 4 hour tour ended up being 7 hours. Bring an umbrella to Pompeii to use for either rain or as shade.

Good snap shot of Naples/Pompeii

Antony_M, Aug 2022
We were picked up at the cruise port by a driver who was already there when we disembarked. We collected 2 guides on route to our first stop.. a large cathedral , we waited about 15/20mns for the rest of the group to arrive so we just had a more leisurely look around/take some photos of the cathedral rather than stand on the street which was nice before heading around with the group..we then drove around the city, which was nice to see...i should have wrote down the name of our guide, she was very knowledgeable and offered to take photos at the top of the city looking down towards Capri. We then headed to Pompeii, it was chaotic any another wait of 20mns alot of different guides coming together, we ended up as quite a large group..the explanation around pompeii was great, could have done with more time even 30mns , so the time that was wasted, for more leisurely view. So good but could have been better. We were directed to the bus for our return as some people were going to mt vesuvius.

Nice tour of Naples and Pompeii

lbahroo, Jul 2022
Overall a reasonably good tour of the highlights of Naples and a detail tour of Pompeii including discussion of life in Pompeii during the Roman era. A drawback was that we made several stops to pick up passengers in the city and a larger group joined us for the Pompeii tour. Slightly chaotic changing guides on the return trip as a portion of the group is going up to Mount Vesuvius. A word of caution, if you have someone with walking difficulties Pompeii can be a challenge. Also the tour guide could make a better effort to look at the needs of all the individuals in the group as we go through Pompeii.

The NON tour of Naples City with nice short exposure in the Pompeii site.

Brian_D, Jun 2022
Meting just outside of the cruise port gate area, there were many local tour operators holding up signs searching for their guests, it was chaotic and not easy to locate ours. Once we did however we stood and waited and waited with him w.hile he kept waiting for 6 more people. Finally, the group of us raised a bit of a fuss as our time was wasting and well past our pick-up time. The bus finally came in and we were greeted with a small bus already having 6 non-English speaking passengers on board. Once all loaded on we started our drive and en route picked up a lady who we thought would be our guide but shortly after at the first stop a church she traded out with our actual guide. As there was no mention in the description that we would have an opportunity to enter a church requiring shoulders covered our two wives were left standing outside. After a long wait outside I went into the church to see where the small group and guide had gone, he said he was looking for us? Well, in fact as I've stated, a couple of us had to wait outside. Reloaded onto the bus with the new guide and stopped in a glass-covered market area and I guess expected to buy stuff? Reboardeed the bus, and had very little ENGLISH commentary while making the drive to the Pompeii site. (we were expecting a drive around Naples with ENGLISH commentary which was minimal). At the entry to Pompeii, a lot of time was wasted waiting for groups to assemble and get their ear-piece/radios. But eventually, the original lady guide from earlier took an all ENGLISH group on a wonderful tour of the ruins (she was the most organized and professional portion of this tour !) With limited time she moved along, spoke the whole time, and offered lots of information and anecdotes. Once back at the starting point where we all met it was CHAOS! Various buses all headed for various destinations and instructions were basically just to get on any bus going to your destination? We did arrive back at the ship on time as guaranteed. We did have good exposure to Pompeii for the short time we had there but the rest of the tour was a waste of time.

Best way to see Naples and Pompeii!

Douglas_D, Nov 2019
We visited Naples in mid-October as the final port call on a 9-day cruise. The tour did a good job of keeping us on schedule despite having to break up and re-form groups by language. Their small luxury vans were a welcome change from the larger tour buses used by most operators. We were picked up right on the cruise pier and taken to our first stop, the Cathedral of Naples. There we were able to leisurely tour the magnificent church before it became crowded with other tour groups. The bus tour of Naples itself saved us a lot of walking and we got to see most of the scattered historic areas without draining off what little energy we had left. There was a break for excellent coffee before we moved on to Pompeii which was about 45 minutes outside the city. Our guide, Elisa, was well-informed, entertaining, and full of interesting facts about Roman life in Pompeii. I wish we had a full day instead of about 2.5 hours to see the ruins. They are fascinating! Elisa made sure we saw the highlights of Pompeii and we hope to get back there again some day. The van dropped us back at the cruise pier in time to still walk around the historic area of Naples, shop, and have coffee and cannolis in the indoor shopping center, Bohemki: Galleria Umberto I°, a must see for its soaring glass roof, statues, and marble floors. This is a premium tour and well worth the fee to see the highlights of Naples and Pompeii with great guides.

Chaotic process

1house62, Nov 2019
Passed between 3 different guides and each one was disinterested in doing what we were paying for, there was a baby on the tour and she wanted to play with her we had to ask for info about where we were and she acted like she was offended. All 3 were unfriendly if you asked a question they seemed annoyed.

Very poor.

rmd1244, Oct 2019
Picked up in a small van which was too crowded and uncomfortable for our small group. Tour of Naples was very disappointing. A church. Stop to take photos by the sea. Then a square and bakery. Pompeii tour was well-done. Guide was informative and humourous. Headsets were cheap. Total disorganization at the end. Over priced. Would recommend researching another company.

Late start but ended well

Christine_R, Oct 2019
The guide was late. Things seemed a little off but one he arrived his English was fairly understandable. He was knowledgeable and with a nice sense of humor. We loved the tour.

Good Guide, but some confusion with logistics

Susan_K, Oct 2019
I was pleased that our driver was on time at the appointed meet-up point at our cruise ship port. He had difficulty finding our guide and drove around the city trying to locate him. There was confusion with who was to be our guide and which passengers were to be on each part of our tour. It would be helpful to have a step stool for use when existing and entering the mini-bus/van as getting off required some "jumping". For older passengers, this is hard on their knees. Our tour guide, Andre, was very knowledgeable and answered our questions. It was nice to have the earbuds so that you could hear what he was saying when you were not close to him. Overall, I was pleased with the tour, tour guide and service provided.

Naples Pompeii Half Day Tour

CherylFox12, Oct 2019
Was not impressed with Naples. It’s a very dirty city. We spent the first hour waiting for our tour operator who was delayed due to the subway system closing. Then we spent the next 30 minutes picking up people. Pompeii was nice, but overall not impressed with the whole tour.

confusion

Lynell B, Aug 2019
Our specific tour guide, Annalisa was very good, but the tour itself seemed disorganized. Or at least it felt that way. In Pompei a number of tours came together, and were parcelled out to new guides, all this amid the hordes of tourists. Then when the tour was done, we were taken back to the meeting point to be parcelled out again, It was very confusing as there were so many groups, and guides, and amid the hubbub, very hard to hear directions..There were literally a few hundred of us on the sidewalk with hundreds of other tours around us,as we were trying trying to figure our which person to follow.

Disorganized bate and switch

Andrew M, Aug 2019
When we booked we were promised a van with no more than 10 people, and this was the case for the first half of the tour of Naples. However, we were moved from van to van at various locations, had different guides, drivers, and different tourists at each van switch. When the van changes happened, it seemed that the tour company did not have things organized well. At one point we sat in the van on the street for nearly 20 minutes waiting for another van to arrive. The city tour is not worth the time as the city is dirty, covered in graffiti, and the tour did not show much other than a panoramic viewpoint and a church tour. Once we reached Pompeii we were combined with groups from other van tours and a bus tour, so our small group grew to approximately 50 people. We were given headsets so we could all hear. We then waited 15 minutes for the guide to get our tickets which were apparently not pre-arranged. The tour of Pompeii is overly-crowded in the summer and I do not recommend a summer visit here. The ruins are fascinating to see. The tour guide was full of information but we felt rushed through and in certain sections were waiting in lines for up to 10 minutes. After Pompeii we were put on a fully occupied large bus and taken back to our cruise ship, once again not being provided the small group tour we were promised. All in all, this is our first disappointing experience with booking a VIATOR tour. I have read other reviews with this bait and switch approach, but have never had the experience until now.

Naples City and Pompeii Half Day sightseeing Tour

Roxanne_B, Aug 2019
Margarita was truly amazing, from start to finish. We have a great time. She was so knowledgeable, easy to understand, and answered all our questions. She also told us where to find the best pizza in Naples. The only downside of the tour was saying the group is 20 or less people. That was misleading, it was 20 or less until we got to Pompeii, where they added another 24 people to our tour.

Tour - incomplete

Lucy_C, Jun 2019
Guide was very educational and know the history of naples and pompeii but she was not the same person to take us back to the cruise ship. This caused confusion as we were a large party of 19 people. All the tours, the guide will normally be with you from the beginning to the end. Very sad to say that none of us were happy with being left in Pompeii and passed on to another guide who was not helpful

Excellent service

Kimiko_R, Jun 2019
This was a shared shore excursion. We started in a van of about 11 people (as we toured Naples) and then ended in a mini bus with about 20 people (as we toured Pompeii). The guide we had the entire day was amazing. Her English was perfect and she was very knowledgeable. The only trouble we had was in finding our driver upon disembarking from our ship in the morning. Our Disney ship was at one port but our ticket said to meet the driver at the main port. So we walked 1/2 mile to the main port and after waiting about 30 minutes, we received a phone call from the driver who said he was at the port where our ship had docked! He then drove to where we were waiting and all was well (thank goodness my sister in law had international cell service). It would have been much easier if instead of our ticket specifying which port to meet in, it simply said "in front of your ship".
