The best way to experience the royal palace is to join a private or semi private tour with a licensed tour guide. I enjoyed it tremendously.

Museo Prado with Angel: GREAT.

Over the past five decades a visit to the Prado has been high on my bucket list. With the superb Angel as our guide, my patience was amply rewarded with a wonderful survey of European—mostly Spanish of course—from the early Renaissance through Goya. Angel is a gifted teacher, expertly weaving great art and fascinating historical context, Hapsburg, Bourbon, etc. The history of Spain. Examples : how to observe The Washing of the Feet by Tintoretto, Botticelli’s Escenas de La Histoire de Nastagio deli Onesti, The Spinners and Las Meninas of Velasquez. And all of the amazing Goya, beyond expectations. Visiting the Prado is a treat; with Angel, a transcendent experience!

The tour was amazing! We did indeed skip the long line and walked in through the separate group entrance on the side. Our guide Isabella had a great personality and shared a lot of her knowledge with us. But most importantly she was very kind and attentive to our 6-year old and kept him entertained the entire 2.5 hours. Thank you!

We booked a semi private tour but it ended up being private. Sean was a fantastic guide. He spent time with us outside the Palace, inside the armory exhibit and in the Palace. He was so knowledgeable, friendly and entertaining. We learned so much about Spanish (and world) history on the tour. Highly recommended!

We had originally booked a small group tour, but had to rebook because the Palace was closed on the original date with state business. We didn’t get much notice about that and initially didn’t get an explanation as to why, so be aware these can be cancelled without much notice. We were really glad to have the private tour though. Our guide Javier was awesome - super knowledgeable and able to tell us so much about the palace. It is really hard to describe how lavish and opulent all of the different rooms we were able to see. We got the longest tour I could book, which I recommend as well. While we only get access to a limited number of rooms in the humongous palace, there is so much to see in each room. The private guide was able to answer details about the different rooms an items we saw. The private guide was also necessary because the place was absolutely packed and we were able to skip some very long lines.

Marta was exceptional - a true master of the history of the palace, its development and its residents over time. She provided detailed history of Madrids beginnings, the royal influence in the modernization of the city, along with its trades/factories (fabric, porcelain etc). Fantastic!

Great tour of the Palacio Real with Marta

We had a wonderful tour of the Palacio Real with our guide, Marta. She is extremely knowledgeable about Spanish history in general, and in particular about the people and events of Madrid since it became Spain's capital. Marta even managed to keep our two sons (14 and 11) engaged during the trip around and through the palace! She's a great guide and highly recommended.

Marta was so wonderful!! Our kids (ages 18, 20 & 21) were so impressed with her knowledge and friendliness. Marta even showed us many of Madrid's secrets on our walk to the Palace. Marta was patient and good-natured as we bombarded her with tons of questions. We would love to do another tour with Marta next time we are in Madrid (hopefully soon!).
