This cooking class was so fun and cosy and well organised, and Kinga was an excellent guide and host. She was passionate, very knowledgeable and so kind and friendly. We cooked in a cosy apartment and it felt so homely, and we all ate together after. The experience was not rushed, I felt very relaxed. I highly recommend this experience and I’m so glad I did it ☺️

We had the best time with Mesi and Emma! They were incredible teachers and we learned so much. Besides for that my husband and I had such a great time getting to know them and we felt like a group of friends having dinner together. We loved learning new recipes and cooking skills we can take home with us. 10/10 would recommend this experience to anyone.

True local food all around five star tour

No matter how slow you walk or need a but of help , this foodie cooking tour is for you. I hurt my knee stupidly climbing ladders to out up new ceiling fans right before this trip (I’m 66) . Our guide was wonderful walking slow, waiting for me, and giving me breaks . The market was really neat. The cooking lesson was fabulous. I cook a lot but even I learned new methods and the anppetizers and final traditional paprika chicken were fantastic. The wine was great and the extra treat of picking out vintage Hungarian cards was magical. Birdie the guide walked me outside and made sure I was in the taxi safely. First class all the way! You won’t leave disappointed.

    Excellent experience!

Amazing experience, touring the market and tasting amazing foods from different vendors with a great amount of history! Chef Birdie did a great job instructing us and teaching us how to make chicken paprikash

    Top experience in Budapest!

We really loved spending the afternoon with Kinga - what a lovely outing for our family! Highly recommend

    Outstanding - highly recommend

    Kendra_T, Dec 2025
The entire experience was an excellent way to spend an afternoon in Budapest, gaining insight into local food culture and customs. Our host, Kinga, was a delight. We traveled with someone with mobility challenges, so be aware, there’s about 30 minutes of walking through the market and then about 15 minutes to walk to the nearby apartment. Kinga was patient and we made it, but just want others to be aware. The elevator was broken in the Central Market during our visit, but the escalator worked and we took the wheelchair (empty) on the escalator (our companion was able to walk onto the escalator).

    Cooking adventure

This was such a fun experience! I loved that it started with shopping in the central market to buy ingredients we would use. Our guide Mesi also took that opportunity to provide some history of Hungary that helped to provide context to the food culture of the country. Once in the kitchen, I appreciated it was decorated to feel like a real kitchen versus a sterile environment so it really felt like we were in a friend's kitchen hanging out while cooking dinner. The final meal was delicious and I can't wait to make it at home!

Great Market tour and food experience

    Elisa_V, Nov 2025
I'm so glad we booked this experience. More than just a cooking class we got a tour and history of Central Market plus just enough history and geography of Hungary. Our host Ben did a great job making everyone at ease and ensuring everyone got to participate. We bought all the ingredients for chicken paprikash and he explained a lot about paprika and the products for sale in the market. The dish, the chicken and the noodles, was simple enough to reproduce at home but wonderfully tasty. We also had a sampling of sausages, cheeses and pickled foods and wine to snack on before and during cooking. We ended right on time 4 hours after start. The kitchen was well organized, spacious and clean, a great setup for this experience. As others have mentioned we got to pick an old postcard as a souvenir and Ben translated for us. Beforehand was wishing making a dessert was included, but honestly it just doesn't fit in this time; I'm glad instead that we had the market time.

Birdie and Kings did a wonderful job teaching us about Hungarian cooking. From the stop at Central Market and throughout the cooking process, they were engaging and very knowledgeable. There were a variety of cooking experience represented in the participants, but I think everyone had a good time.

Love the food AND the host!

    Fred_M, Nov 2025
Food was great! Messi was a great host and did a great job engaging everyone in the group. She even offered suggestions for our time in Budapest. She was a real superstar. Go hungry, but make sure you go.

We had the pleasure of joining a cooking class in Budapest. The atmosphere was welcoming and well-organized, the hosts were knowledgeable and passionate, and every detail was perfectly arranged. It was a wonderful opportunity to learn about traditional Hungarian cuisine while connecting with people from around the world. Highly recommended for anyone looking for an authentic and memorable culinary experience in Budapest.

    Underwhelming and overcrowded.

    Richard_S, Nov 2025
We were left underwhelmed by this experience and it wasn’t as good as other cookery classes we have done. The market tour was short and being a Sunday, lots of the stalls were closed. The class itself was cramped and the food limited and more focussed on alcohol drinking (not great as some of our group don’t drink and they were only offered tap water or squash). The amount of cooking that we did was small and I didn’t learn anything new. We only made one dish of a chicken stew and dumplings and was sad not to learn how to make goulash. The dessert listed in the “what to expect” was never made so four hours of drinking tap water and chopping an onion to be left with a small plate of food. It could have been amazing, but there were too many people for the room the class was in and there is no point in doing the class on the Sunday as there is nothing to see and the tour was shortened. One of our group stayed at home as a coeliac and was promised ahead of time this wouldn’t be a problem, but the guide confirmed there would potentially be cross contamination. Looking at what was served it wouldn’t have been ideal.

    Response from Host, Nov 2025

Hey Richard, thank you for taking the time to share your feedback, and we’re genuinely sorry that the experience didn’t match your expectations. We always aim to create a warm, grandma-style cultural immersion where guests cook, taste, learn about Hungarian households, and enjoy a relaxed social atmosphere. It seems that this time we couldn’t make the experience work for your group, and we understand how disappointing that must feel. Sundays at the Central Market Hall can indeed be quieter, but we still include our mini tasting tour with traditional bites and stories about local history, ingredients, and family cooking traditions. Most guests enjoy this as a unique way to experience the building and its heritage, even on slower days — but we respect that it didn’t feel that way for you. Our cooking class focuses on traditional home-style dishes, prepared the way Hungarian families would cook them. We try to keep the experience welcoming for all types of guests, including those who prefer not to drink alcohol, with local wines and liqueurs offered freely for those who do, and non-alcoholic alternatives always available. We’ll review this with the team to ensure every guest feels equally looked after. We take dietary needs seriously, but we also want to be transparent: in a shared kitchen environment there is always a chance of cross-contamination, which is why our team communicates this clearly in advance. We are sorry this caused any inconvenience. We’re proud that most of our guests enjoy cooking multiple dishes, learning local stories, and tasting their way across the market — and we’re sorry to hear that this wasn’t your experience. Anyone considering the class can look through photos of the venue, dishes, and market tastings beforehand to get a full picture of what we offer. Thank you again for the feedback — it helps us continue improving. We wish the rest of your time in Budapest was wonderful.

    Not in a home setting....

    Duke_Y, Nov 2025
Not in a home setting. You may be in a large group. Ours was a group of 14 which I felt was twice what it should have been. Difficult to see and hear at the market without whisper systems. Too much time spent waiting for the food to cook. Should be marketed more as a dining and wine drinking experience. Expected a small, intimate setting in someone's flat with maybe four to six people, not 14.

    Response from Host, Nov 2025

Hi Duke! Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We’re really sorry to hear that the tour didn’t match the experience you were expecting. It looks like there may have been a mix-up during booking. The experience you joined was our Budapest Food Tasting Tour, which takes guests around the city to try different local favourites: street food, traditional tavern bites, goulash, savory pancakes, chimney cake, cold cuts, and even wine pairings. This one is focused on exploring flavours rather than a small, hands-on cooking session. Our Foodapest Cooking Class is the intimate, home-style experience with a market visit followed by a family-style cooking class in our traditional Budapest apartment. Small groups, hands-on cooking, shared meal—exactly the type of setting you described. We try our best to make this clear in the listings, but sometimes confusion happens, and because of that you’re covered by our Foodapest Guarantee. Please reach out to us at info@foodapest.net and we’ll arrange a refund and hope to welcome you next time for the cooking class experience you were looking for. Thanks again for your feedback and for giving us the chance to make it right! Joseph & Foodapest team

The class was wonderful. Ben met us at the Central Market Hall, and gave us a great tour along with some Budapest history. After sampling a nice selection of tasty pickled vegetables, and picking up our dinner ingredients, we took a short walk to a local home for our cooking class. Ben started things off by serving us a nice selection of Hungarian salami and cheese for an appetizer, with a local wine and flavored water. Then we got started on our meal, and Ben provided great instruction in preparing an authentic Chicken Paprikash dish, and homemade Nakedli (Hungarian dumplings). The meal was delicious and was accompanied by tastings of two additional local wines. Ben is really a warm, intelligent, welcoming person. The entire experience was fun, educational and felt like something we would do with a friend.

Easy to find meeting spot, fun navigating through market to purchase ingredients, cooking instructions fun and engaging. Enjoyed our wonderful meal with strangers who became friends over this shopping, food preparation and dining experience!

    Budapest hands on cooking experience.

Combines a really good tour of the market, and some history to understand Hungary. The cooking part of the event included some really helpful tips, and step by step instructions. We were included in the process so a good learning experience. We got the recipe so I’m feeling confident that I can replicate.

We took the cooking class on October 9 with Kinga and Bertie and it was great! Walking through the market to get supplies was so interesting and fun. I could have wandered around for hours. We took the short bus ride to the beautiful kitchen and made a delicious chicken paprikas, enjoyed great wine and wonderful company. Kinga showed us so many good culinary tips and was an excellent teacher. Even my non cooking husband had a great time! It was lovely to have conversations with locals and other travelers. Thank you Kinga and Bertie!
