My husband and I had a great time trying new foods with Masa. He was very friendly, and happy to answer our many questions! Very different than other food tours we've taken in the past, but definitely one of our favorites! Highly recommend (and try something you wouldn't normally eat. You might like it. I did!)

Fun experience that showed different aspects of the food culture - from Mitsukoshi’s food hall, to local side-street cafes serving local fare. Appreciated getting to experience different local food and drink, and our guide was a great host. We really enjoyed our time and samplings.

It was very casual and relaxing. If you aren't used to how much exists underground in Tokyo this will begin to open your eyes.

A LOT of food and a LOT of walking. Loved that we went to local places rather than touristy spots. The guide, Nabe, was charming and super knowledgeable

While we were able to experience two restaurants that we never would have. The itinerary said three, but we only went two places. The guide barely Spoke English so we did not get any information regarding Tokyo. She also made a point of telling us that the Tip was not included. We had a pancake type of item which was interesting and the second restaurant we each got one prawn and one piece of Chicken Karage.
Would not recommend.

This was a great way to get to sample some local food in places not typically visited by tourists. The food we had was excellent and the guide on our tour (Yuki) was too. It was a very enjoyable evening.

Great tour, the guide was so knowledgeable and the food delicious! Chance to try some Japanese food you may not have tried before
Marc_M, Sep 2024
Great food and drinks. Excellent guide. We had a great time. We wet to 2 restaurants. We had typical Japanese food.

Despite the number of stairs! this was a fun tour with a good group. Mizuku is a great guide with a good sense of humour who related well to all of his guests. We tried a number of foods (and drinks) that we have not seen or heard of before and went into eating establishments we would never approach on our own.

Have our guide was fantastic. He took us to a great variety of experiences. Best time! We got to meet some great people from other countries. Food was spectacular.
Brandon_H, Jun 2024
The tour guide was sweet and understanding, BUT this is not a food tour. It is a shopping tour with a meal at the end. I probably should have read the comments better to understand.

We had a really wonderful time with Mizuki. He was very knowledgeable, courteous, and a delightful guide. We had some wonderful food items that we otherwise would not have found for the tour. I would go again.
Margaret_J, May 2024
Delicious food and it was fun cooking the 'pancakes'. Our guide was lovely and she explained the local food. Maybe a bit too much walking to get to our first food destination.

Yuko gave us a great experience, walked us through the complex system of using the Tokyo underground subways and brought us first to the Monja area. Our first food was sampling Monjayaki layered pancakes cooked on the griddle right in front of us. The sake pour was a fun experience all by itself: the glass is put in a small wooden box and the sake is poured to overflowing so that the box is half filled as well as the full glass. Fun. Then we took the subway again to the Tsukishima area for a several course dinner in a small local eatery. Lots of new tastes for us and we regularly eat Japanese cuisine at home. The trip was extra special with Yuko as our guide!

Rocky - our tour guide was fun ! It was his first official tour as a food guide - so he went above to make sure we enjoyed the experience
Urmi_N, Apr 2024
Yuko was a very good guide, she not only enlightened us but also made our movement from one area to another very smooth. We started our Tokyo tour with this culinary trip to utilise the half day we had in hand.It turned out to be a delightful experience that introduced us to the city with a local,it's food and it's soul. Unforgettable.

Overpriced and disappointing! (½ * out of 5!)
The group of 6 persons started the tour after waiting 20 minutes (2 people missing).
We began our tour at a food department at Mitsukoshi. The guide hurried ahead and we all tried to follow. (It was the group members that made sure that nobody was separated from the group - not the guide).
He then asked if any of us were allergic to peanuts and went away. We waited…he returned with a selection of wagashi / mochi. A nice gift but a bit surprising?
The guide then wanted to share something interesting with us, we waited for the elevator to take us up to the top floor. Since it was a busy afternoon it took us a VERY long time to get up and down again. What we saw was tiny lettuce plants growing under artificial light identical to our locally grocery store back home.
By now we were getting really hungry and a bit puzzled…. (Two persons in the group decided that “They had enough” and left in a taxi muttering: We want our money back).
The four remaining participant then went by tube and a long walk to the first stop, Tsukishima Monja street. The monjayaki was what one could expect, cabbage, a few shrimps and mussels. This and some tiny samples was all there was but took away some of the worst hunger.
High Speed walking again and back on the underground.
The izakaya in Yurakucho Yokocho was a really genuine one. We had yakitori (nice), beer and some small dishes and that was that!
Joining this tour you get:
a lot of high speed walking,
traditional sweets bought in a foodstore to bring with you,
two stops (not three eateries as advertised!)
a guide who was very difficult to understand
Previously we’ve been attending food tours in Tokyo, Singapore and Bangkok.
This one was such a disappointment and ridiculously overpriced.

Interesting cooking monjo on the grill. New taste treat. Enjoyed seeing the dept store. Grilled meat at last place underdone for our taste.
Melanie_P, Apr 2024
We were looking forward to chicken skewers as advertised but were given chicken cartilage. The monja was fine. Sadly our guide didn’t say much or explain the food or culture as we had hoped.
Michael_B, Mar 2024
Started off slowly but was very enjoyable and the guide was very good. Would recommend the tour but would suggest that you advise people of the food offering. Cabbage isn't everyone's cup of tea.
Teri_W, Mar 2024
Loved the mochi treat at the beginning and all the rest of the food. Thank you Yuko for taking us to different parts of Tokyo and introducing us to new dishes!
Jacquie_F, Mar 2024
I am sorry to say I did not rate this trip. The itinerary took us to 1.5 hours before we even stepped into a restaurant. The guide did not speak English well, did not seem to know where he was going, walked very fast and did not check if the group was keeping up. We were taken to a rammed food hall and although were bought samples did not get to try any until after the tour. Then we were taken to a stationery shop to view hydroponic lettuces! Eventually taken to restaurant but only 2 of 3 the 3 promised as he ran out of time. It would have been better to focus on one small area with less steep steps (there were elderly people on tour who left early) and visit 3 eateries close by sampling different Japanese specialities - and at least one dessert. I also stated one of us not allowed to drink alcohol but this had not been made a note of. Have taken 3 Viator Food Tours now and this was by far the worst. Rome and Paris were great.
Kris_T, Mar 2024
Going to the Restaurant where we had the ‘pan ale’ made on the grill in front of us and then goi g to the pub. I wish the ‘dessert would have been AFTER dinner, instead of before, and that there would have been more variety of them. All of them were sweet bean paste. There were many wonderful looking desserts and wish we would have had a couple of those.
Peter_A, Mar 2024
Knowledgeable guide passionate about her job… good English speaker… exposed to non tourist cultural experience… great food and drink
Lisa_S, Dec 2023
Our guide Hoshi was terrific. We felt like she was taking us to her favorite spots. Definitely not places we would have found on our own!
Mina_W, Dec 2023
The tour guide was very nice and friendly however for the price the experience was very limited. Wish we tried more places rather than just 1 main restaurant. Felt like the experience was limited for the price.
