Itinerary
After receiving confirmation of your tour departure, your evening begins with pickup from your central Reykjavik hotel by 4x4. Admire Reykjavík’s dazzling illuminations as you leave the city, then soak up the scenery on the drive to your viewing destination, chosen depending on the weather and aurora forecast to maximize your chances of a northern lights sighting.
As you await the appearance of the lights, make the most of a high-powered telescope to gaze up at the stars and listen as your guide points out the wonders of the solar system, including common star constellations, the Orion nebula, the moon, and even Jupiter.
If you’re lucky, the northern lights will also make an appearance and your guide will ensure all participants get a photograph taken against a backdrop of the spectacular light show (included). As the lights dance across the night sky, learn more about the natural phenomenon from your guide, or relax with a hot chocolate and Kleina pastry (included) as you take it all in.
Head back to Reykjavik at the end of your tour for hotel drop-off.
Tour duration varies depending on the time of year and weather conditions. The tour operator reserves the right to cancel the tour as late as 6:30pm due to unfavorable weather conditions.

Our guides were fantastic. Knowledge, friendly and engaging. I rate this excursion a 5 of 5 despite having not been able to see the lights. But the HUNT for the lights was a great deal of fun and our guides managed to still show us distant stars as well as some of the unique geological features that make up this beautiful land.

Simply the best tour we did in Iceland. Þröstur’s knowledge, passion and personality are second to none, building excitement and bringing boundless energy and expertise to the hunt for the lights! Add the star-gazing and to die for hot chocolate and what else could you ever need! The ONLY choice when picking a Northern Lights tour! Thank you Þröstur

Thank you so much for the amazing review. That really means a lot to hear!
I’m very happy you enjoyed the evening. The Northern Lights are always the main event, but sharing the night sky, the stargazing, and a warm cup of hot chocolate under the stars is a big part of what makes these tours special for us.
Thank you again for the kind words and for trusting us with one of your nights in Iceland. It was a real pleasure having you on the tour! ;-D

Strongly recommend this activity, the hunters genuinely care about giving you the best experience possible!
We unfortunately didn’t see the northern lights through this company (not out of lack of effort, just because they didn’t make an appearance anywhere).
We were only in Iceland 3 nights, the first night was a no show, the company were quick to offer us a space on the next night, which we took, but unfortunately they were a no show again. On our last night the company was fully booked BUT the owner went above and beyond for us, asking a friend he knew would offer a good experience (through another company) to take us with their group. So grateful he did, because the northern lights came out.
Honestly cannot thank you enough! You made our trip and my partners birthday!
Response from Host, Mar 2026
Thank you so much for the kind words and for taking the time to share your experience!
The Northern Lights can definitely test our patience sometimes, so I’m really happy we were able to help you get out one last time and that the lights finally showed up for you. When guests only have a short stay, we always try our absolute best to find a solution, even if that means calling in a favor from friends in the industry ;-D
I’m very glad it worked out in the end and that it made your partner’s birthday special. That means a lot to us.
Thank you again for the recommendation and for being such great guests during your time with us.

Thank you so much for the kind words! We’re really happy to hear that you enjoyed the hunt itself! That’s a big part of what we try to share, even on nights when the lights decide to stay shy. Showing you the stars, the landscape, and a bit of Iceland’s unique geology is exactly why we love what we do.
Thanks for joining us and for the 5-star review. You’re always welcome back for another hunt, and we hope the Northern Lights put on a show for you next time 😊

We did the tour on Feb 11 in 2025 and the whole experience was great - the cars were comfy and on time, our guides (Vikingur and the Canadian guy) were super friendly and knowledgeable. Time was never wasted - we saw the aurora already on the way and after stopping at a really great location - the guide setup the equipment and took many amazing photos of us when the next aurora events happened. Between the aurora events - the guides told us a lot of interesting facts about aurora and the stars and Iceland, they also setup the telescope for us, served delicious cookies and hot chocolate, and answered all our questions. I couldn't ask for a better experience. Thank you, HappyWorld!
Response from Host, May 2025
Double the post, double the love! Thanks again for the awesome review :D We’ll take it as a sign the night was twice as magical. Aurora-approved!
Jordan_K, Jan 2025
The guides were very friendly and very well educated, not just about the northern lights, but also about the stars and other planets which we got a chance to look at with a telescope! Very much recommended if you want to see the northern lights!
Response from Host, May 2025
Thanks so much for the kind words! We're really glad you enjoyed the experience and had a chance to explore both the Northern Lights and the night sky through the telescope. Appreciate the recommendation!
SHEILA_W, Jan 2025
I realize they can't control the weather or what we might see, but this felt like a huge waste of money. The guide barely spoke English, so we didn't know what was happening most of the time. They drove us to an area that the app showed did not have northern lights (to be fair, the areas with northern lights were showing as cloudy, but I'd rather wait for a break in the clouds than hope the northern lights would suddenly appear much lower). Our night happened to be bitter cold. We ended up with the tiniest speck of northern lights (enough to take photos), really just visible through the photos. They never even offered a re-run another night (not that we would have taken it). I felt like they kept us out way longer than needed (back after 3 am) in an effort to avoid having to re-do it another night, even when it was obvious to all involved that there would be no success that night. If you have a rental car and the app, I would recommend being in control of your own fate instead of doing this tour. Having the pic is cool, but definitely not worth the expense! I felt bad for the guide, as it wasn't his fault, but it was pretty miserable. We were lucky later in our trip when we stayed down in Hvolsvollur and had great conditions right outside of our AirBnb, and saw tons of them on our own, on New Year's Eve! Sorry to say, I wouldn't even consider a tour like this unless you don't have a car.
Response from Host, Jan 2025
I'm very sorry to hear about your experience. Thank you for taking your time and write about it.
The experience you describe wasn't exactly as you say it was...
Your driver did speak English and quite well, he does however have an accent... We did notify you that we had a problem with one of our guide and we needed to get an outsourced guide for the night.
The option you got was either to cancel your booking or join with a guide with a good reputation to do your tour and I've seen him in action and he's great :-) As I said, I believe we notified you before the tour.
We only use official satellite images, and we keep our eye on the forecast data straight from the source. Icelandic MET office and NOAA aurora data.
On your night we needed to go southeast, which is not the best due to light pollution and open areas without wind coverage. But we had to, due to the incoming cloud cover. There were "no breaks" in the clouds as seen on satellite, incoming them incoming from the Northeast.
We can't change the weather... it does get cold, which we do address in our Go email. We offer a good, detailed information on how to dress for the cold weather in our "Go" email and this night, we added "It’s going to be freezing cold! Coldest night of the season so far! The weather in Reykjavík doesn’t compare to what we’re about to face. Please dress appropriately! Please see section 3. for best way to dress the cold off" .
The lights themselves, clear sighting though I have to agree they did not impress us.
Your tour was missing stargazing and we figured those who asked for a free re-run, they got it. You might have not noticed that in our "Go" email, we outline how non-sighting works. "non-sightings tour, you are eligible for an unlimited number of re-runs for a period of two years until you have a successful tour with us. To book a free re-run tour, you must do so in writing by sending an email to info@happyworld.is. It is not enough to ask your guide."
We were 30 minutes longer out than we usually allow us to stay, which is explained with the very icy roads on the way back. We do have aurora data forecast which helps us like BZ value, but data is sometimes not on par with observations. I can promise you, the only reason you staid out so long was the guide trying his best to show better lights then we already saw.
Regarding seeing the lights without a tour: It is a good chance to see the lights if you have clear cloud cover. You see some form of lights around 95% of clear nights. The forecast for our night was 4-kp. We only got to see a kp-index of 1 and you'd seen the same thing anywhere in Iceland and clear skies. I'm very happy you got to enjoy beautiful lights on new years, we did as well. We got unlucky with the date you booked, I must agree. But we truly try our best every time! The cold and a mild sighting make the nights less bearable, but please to everyone who reads this, dress appropriately as it changes the whole experience!

A very memorabe night. The lights came out beautifully and, although as cold as can be, we stayed and took photogrpahs and ejoyed the beauty. Wonderful! Woiuld highly recommend this tour.

Thank you for your review and we're very glad to enjoyed the night!

Thrusther and Sara were great and personable guides. You can tell they are very passionate about their tours. They took us to the absolute middle of nowhere, off-roading where no one else was able to go, to get us amazing views of the lights. We trusted them to only take us out if they thought there was a very good chance of seeing the lights- and boy did they deliver!
Response from Host, Jan 2025
Thank you so much for your review! We truly try our best and we're very glad to got to shine :-D

Amazing! So beautiful! Our guide Dominic was great! He was on time, courteous, and very knowledgeable. Base camp was a lovely beginning stop and then Dominic took us to the perfect spot! The aurora was very active at a KP 4 and it was magnificent. Dominic took epic photos for us and was super quick with returning them via email to us on same night!! Highly recommend this tour!

Our guide, Dominic, had the perfect location to view the northern lights. He took multiple photos of us with the northern lights. It was everything we wanted in a tour.

I don’t like to write bad reviews, but, in my opinion, don’t waste your money on this “small group” tour. It was definitely not worth $225 per person.
I don’t mean to be mean, but the guy who ran the thing was kinda of a jerk. The guy who drove our vehicle was great (Ollie)…but the guy running the show “used a rude harsh tone” when I used my flash light to walk my 82 year old mother across unstable ground. He told us not to use flashlights or anything cuz that would ruin the experience (as our eyes would not adjust). That is complete BS!
The night before this Viator outing, my mom and I had been part of an 11 day tour. We were in Hella. Our hotel was out in the middle of nowhere. We were complete amateurs and got amazing shots. I used my iPhone 15 Pro Max and got stunning, clear, photos and videos of the Northern Lights and people with the Northern Lights in the background, with JUST MY iPhone. The quality of my photos and videos were amazing compared to the quality of what our tour guide sent us via email. I will gladly send you a side by side comparison if you write me and send me your email. I was so unimpressed by the quality of this guys photos and videos that I felt compelled to write this review. That, and his attitude. He later apologized for being a jerk and sounding so harsh, but he made a very poor first impression.
Anyway, all that to say…don’t waste $225 on this guy. I saw other tours for more than half the price. And, they had better reviews. If I could go back, I would book with another group … not this guy.
Once again, I don’t like writing poor reviews, but honestly, there is nothing to rave about with this tour. Spend less money and go with another tour. Or, rent a car and drive outside of the city and get shots on your own…just be sure to have a “night mode” on whatever phone camera model you own. Or, download and app that will give you that capability. Peace!

So, we expected this review. And we're very sad to see this was your experience.
Let me first address the fact of this matter. Ástþór, your numerous 5 star reviewed lead guide for this tour (does not run things as he is our guide), repeatedly ask you to not use your flashlight. After a client complained about your flashlight, he became stern to protect the 11 other clients which were a part of your tour. Which we never had to do before, as people usually understand that the night is about more then just them and this rule is for our clents, not for us.
Regular flashlight does in fact ruin our night vision, and numerous studies are out there, easy to find on google, to prove our point. Actually, every Northern lights written guide state you should not use flashlights at all to see the Northern lights and the stars better. As it takes up to an hour getting adjusted to the dark, but few milliseconds readjusting to the light and therefor it is not allowed on our tour to use flashlights and the reason why we have red flashlights which we offer to loan if needed, which you declined.
After reviewing the photos you receved, over 100 photos and two videos, there were some good, and some not so good. And the reason why we take many pictures is to try and get the perfect one. But, we don't throw away the not so good ones and it is not for us to decide if its worth sharing or not.
There are cheaper tours out there in minibus or a bus. But we are on par with the price with other jeep tours. We go a step further and offer real home made hot chocolate and stargazing for no additional charge. But only in bigger buses you won't be told not to use your flashlights :)
We also have to disagree that other northern lights tours have better reviews, as Happyworld is one of very few over all 5 star Northern lights tour we found on TripAdvisor after searching.
John_O, Sep 2024
Our guide came to the hotel on time and he is friendly. He was very knowledgeable about where to find the northern lights and he knows a lot about the science behind the aurora borealis. And they served us delicious hot chocolate drink. It was a cold night and the hot chocolate helped warm us up. We got to see a magnificent show of the northern lights. Our guide and his assistant Dominic took a lot of our pictures. We were also able to get hundreds of pictures in our cell phone.

I loved this tour - keep in mind I'm not pretentious so I'm showing up knowing I have to contribute to the good time. But a great time was had!
I appreciate the transparency and funny disposition of this team. We found out around 6pm day of if the excursion was happening because they care to only take people out if there's a legitimate chance you'll actually see the lights!
Astpor was our guide - just an amazingly knowledgeable and jovial individual. Our group was 6 guests total and I was picked up on time in an Excursion. They called me and made sure they could find me - they are not trying to leave anyone behind!
We went pretty far out and Astpor found an isolated area and set up his telescope to show us constellations and planets. It was very windy, but we could hide behind a shelter and Astpor kept the car running when we needed warmth!
He explained the northern lights phenomenon and was just all around engaged.
The pictures were delivered the next day so you can download whichever ones you like!
Response from Host, Jan 2024
Awww! We're blushing :D
Thank you so much for this amazing review. We're very happy you enjoyed the tour and Ástþór sends his regards!
Nancy_D, Jan 2024
Good hot chocolate tour driver was late for pickup, we were out for just over 3 hours, not the 3-5 hours.
Response from Host, Jan 2024
Hi Nancy,
I'm very sorry to hear your experience.
Your pickup was 6 minutes to late, that is true :/ Due to a lot of traffic, 5 pickup locations within 30min and one of the guests wasn't ready when the pickup arrived.
During that night, we had the same icy conditions anywhere in Iceland due to a lot of snow, then rain then frost again. Wouldn't have mattered where they went unfortunately. It's not a good idea to move from location to location unless the cloud cover is overwhelming. Due to the fact you might miss something as the strongest Northern lights sometimes come quickly and fade quickly.
The tour is advertised as 3 - 5 hours experience. Which means the tour can be 3, 4 or 5 hours. In your case the pickup started at 9pm and the last drop off was at 1:20pm that makes 4 hours and 20 minutes.
We're very sorry the pickup was delayed. The icy conditions where as they where and unfortunately, we could have done nothing about that. But we're very glad to hear you liked the hot chocolate 🙂
Avril_L, Jan 2024
This was the best northern lights experience I could have wished for. Having tried and failed many times to see the lights, I appreciated the teams honestly both about the time they decided to cancel on the basis there was no real chance of seeing anything, their flexibility in rebooking and their utter professionalism in calling it a go at the last minute for the night we went. And they were right - the lights were wonderful. They took some amazing pictures too! Such perfect memories.
I really welcomed the hot chocolate and cake (I don’t even like hot chocolate but theirs was delicious!) and we finished the night with some stargazing, enhanced by the great telescope they bought along. A really, really knowledgable crew. I felt safe and in the hands of some real experts. I cannot recommend highly enough
Response from Host, Jan 2024
Such a beautiful review! Thank you so much.
We try our very best to bring clients out for a hunt only when we think the chances are good! We're so glad we got the sighting we got that night :D So happy!
Daisy_S, Dec 2023
Cancelled. Come in October. At least they let us know, cancelled and refused without any hassle. Even suggested alternatives.
Response from Host, Dec 2023
Hi Daisy,
Not sure how we got 2 stars doing our job with your best interest in mind...
But obviously the weather isn't something we can change, but we do know the weather! That's why we cancel our tours sometimes.
"Come in October" is deffinatily an incorrect statement. As the the Northern lights are just as good any time of the year. Only difference is the cold which more often works in our favor then against.
As far as I see, we cancelled your tour on a night that should have been cancelled, we did let you know in a timely manner, we fully refunded you and even gave you alternatives. In our book that is A+ for effort and it makes us very sad to get a cold review as yours for our little company when we kept you guys in priority one and low star ratings really affect smaller companies :)

The tour guides energy was great. He was in a great mood, he was really excited to take us out, had a lot of really cool knowledge about the stars and the northern lights. Hats off to Thrustua!

This was a truly amazing experience. The tour organizer waited until the end to confirm the tour, checking for weather forecast to ensure we could see the northern lights. Although luck plays a big role, they were very prepared and informed on everything to make sure we could live the experience. The crew was super kind, knowledgeable and prepared, they even brought camera and got pictures of us, hot chocolate. I had an amazing time and are very grateful for the experience. Loved it! Would definitely recommend this tour to anybody.

HappyWorld did a wonderful job with this tour. We got some wonderful photos, and it was great seeing the Northern Lights. We ended up going out with them multiple nights. Thanks so much to Asthor and Throster!
Response from Host, Oct 2023
Thank you Kevin for your kind review! You've been a recurring traveler with us and we're so pleased we got lucky with the lights :D
We're looking forward to seeing you again sometime in the future!

I informed the company of my pickup location then I received a confirmation number and email. but, no one showed up, no one contact me and didn't answer me. I waited outside for more than 40 minutes in the rain but the guide or tour company didn't show up. They really ruined my day.
Response from Host, Sep 2023
We're very sorry about your experience!
The tour was cancelled due to yellow weather warning and no chance to see the northern lights due to cloud cover that night.
Your booking came in 2 hours after the cancellation or about 30min before the original departure time which is 9pm. You did receive a full refund and a sincere apology 2-3 hours after your booking accidentally came through our system. We never received a message, email, phone call or any reply from you after you made the booking. So we had no idea until we checked our system for our next day booking status.
Again, we're very sorry about your experience ;-(
As in our tour's description, we make a decision at 6:30pm for a "Go" or a "Cancel". And the best idea is reaching out to us as the pickup list for a tour that's a "Go" is already made at this time and a "Cancelled tour" has been cancelled a few hours before.

If your dream is to see Aurora Borealis, then do it smart: maximize your chances to see it and enjoy this tour led by experts and utmost professionals. Those guys simply ove their job, you can feel it from the email communication to the actual tour experience. First of all, they put a lot of effort into planning the tour, considering all factors and picking in which direction they should drive. Secondly, when they start driving, they drive far away from light polution and they wait at the place until Aurora goes up and down and up again (they may even take you to another location, to see it from another perspective). And last but not least, they take amazing unlimited number of pictures of you (included in the price), so you can enjoy the moment to the fullest and not think about your camera setup. They also explain about the star constellations and give you really fun info on Norther lights. When we had our tour, they merged 3 groups so we can also see a comet with a telescope (a surprise, extraordiary bonus of the tour), and all the guides were like described above.
Now, if you dont know why other tours are cheaper: they put you in a big bus, take you out even when the chances of seing Aurora are nonexistent, they dont drive far away and you have one more try only. So in the end, in other tours, it is a game of economics, they dont care about your experience like they do in this tour. At the same night, we saw an amazing night show of Aurora, while some other guys we talked to saw only a faint green rainbow across the sky. I think this tour is a no-brainer honestly. :)
Jacquelyn_N, Jan 2023
I had such a memorable time and would definitely do the tour again! We had to wait hours but we finally saw the lights towards the end of our tour. Our guides were nothing short of excellent and told us so many stories and facts related to Iceland and the Northern lights. Although we waited for hours it didn't really feel like it between hot chocolate, stargazing, and stories. One of the biggest things for me was that they already had the equipment to take pictures so I didn't have to worry about blurry photos. I hope to come back soon!
