Alberto was a great driver/unofficial tour guide. Every where we went, he was full of information and loved describing it all to us. Pompeii and Herculaneum are must sees. Pompeii is a vast city and you could be there a full day and you still may not see it all. This is why a private tour is so beneficial. We stopped at each location where a tour guide for that area was waiting. We were brought to all the best places to see in the towns. Stopped for pictures and had the benefit of going at our own pace and asking all kinds of questions. But my favorite part of the tour (because this is customizable) I asked to go to the Russo Family Winery, Cantina Del Vesuvio, for lunch. They made the reservation for us and brought us there. It was a wonderful, beautiful drive up the mountain to get there. The winery itself was site to see and the view was spectacular. We fully enjoyed the afternoon there with good company, fantastic food and superb wine. Not to mention you were enjoying all this on the side of Mt. Vesuvius where the view was picture perfect. I would highly recommend this tour and customizing it the perfect way for you.

A tour that is not a tour just a driver who didn’t talk much and not even a bottle of water. Driver did his job and that’s all. We paid our own way for guides and lunch so day was ok. Would not recommend

Less crowded. More areas that are well preserved and allowed to see up close. Not so big and crowded. Loved it NOT being a long, hot, and over drawn tour.

Marco was a great driver, took us straight to Pompeii and collected us at the agreed time. He took us to a local restaurant he recommended for lunch, I'm always a bit dubious about these 'recommendations' but lunch was lovely, nice staff, reasonably priced, a very good choice. Drove to Herculaneum and again collected us at the agreed time. Asked if we would recommend the site to others as he hadn't been there before, which we did.

Great driver; not a tour guide

As other travelers have posted, this “tour” is for a driver only. I hope VIATOR will amend the description soon because it puts the driver in an uncomfortable position of having to explain that they’re are not private tour guides. Having said that, our driver Ferdinando was exceptional. He was very professional, friendly, and was in contact with us the entire day. We stayed a little longer in Herculaneum and that was no problem. We exited Pompeii a different way than we entered and he found us in less than a minute. He was very easy to talk with and knowledgeable about every subject. If you’re lucky to get him as a driver you won’t be disappointed.

Driver was very talkative and suggested alternate places that prior passengers and tour groups enjoyed. We visted pompeii was incredible. But we also stopped and had lunch at a beautiful winery on our way back.

High dollar taxi

This is a very deceiving tour. All it is at the end of the day is a 500 dollar taxi ride. He basically arranged for a guide that we had to pay for and he waited in the car while we where rushed through the sites. Nothing against the driver,he was doing his job and was entertaining and professional. But a Total rip off. As far as the sites, absolutely amazing. We would definitely do it differently next ti.e.

SCAM. No tour guide included, just a $700 taxi ride

We booked a $700+ "Herculaneum and Pompeii Private Tour" expecting just what the name advertises, a private tour. Instead we got a van driver who simply drove us to both sites and dropped us off. No tour at all. He said tour guide is not included and we would need to pay extra. A service called "Private tour" in the name and a $700 price strongly implies a tour guide is included. In addition, the reviews mention a tour guide. I could have got a van transfer service booked for under $300. Paying $700 for a van transfer is absurd. Also, we asked the driver to help us find a local non touristy restaurant for lunch. He told us he knew just the place. He took us to a place that was literally called "Ristorante pizzeria Turistico" located next to the entrance to Pompei. Google this and check out the recent reviews. The place is a scam that gives a kickback to guides who bring customers there. It has a 2.7 star rating on Google because they refuse to give you a menu, bring things you didn't order, and try to rip you off. Very rude of our guide to intentionally take us to a scam like this. I will be seeking a refund though Viator.

Thank you for your feedback regarding this Private Service. Kindly note that we have thoroughly investigated this entire matter . We inform you that the services provided for this reservation did not include the English speaking guide ( but the driver can make the arrangements upon the customer’s request ) and the Private Tour implies the service only for you without having to share the provided services with anyone else except the persons in your party. Please keep in mind that the Van & Driver (NCC) “at disposal” cooperating with the Company have the Permitts , Licenses and Authorizations to access all the areas included and obtained ahead of time unlike any Van with inferior costs that are not within compliance with the requests. Given that the driver was asked for a restaurant that was not “touristy” , please keep in mind that there are 6 or 7 restaurants in Pompeii and the less touristy was that one despite the NAME . Given that the driver understood that the customers needed to eat, he still was at disposal and offered to help without forcing anyone to eat at that specific restaurant although as per other customers opinion he received positive comments and did not have any negative feedbak up until now. In case the customers would like to arrange a guided tour in the archaeological sites and they do not perfom in the most professional way, will make sure to take serious actions on this matter and surely we will use this for our continuous improvement.

Alfonso was an amazing driver. He was entertaining, informative, & prompt at keeping us on schedule. He even went out of his way to pick up pizza while we were at one of our stops so we could experience traditional Neopolitan-style pizza when we got back in the van. Barbara was the perfect guide during our tours of Herculaneum & Pompeii. Her insights into the lives of the people, the culture, & history made both sites come alive. Even though our time was condensed into one day, I feel like because of Barbara we got the most out of our experience. Thank you, Barbara & Alfonso, for making our day unforgettable!

Perfect day at Pompeii and winery at the base of Vesuvius

Pompeii was amazing. Out tour guide was very knowledgeable at Pompeii. Our guide Alfonso was a riot and made a wonderful change to our tour when we booked on a day when Herculaneum was closed. He took us to a fantastic winery instead. Super tour!

We were met by our driver Alfonso and the tour guide at our hotel. Both were very courteous and attentive. The tour of Herculaneum and Pompeii was very informative and full of detail which we would have missed out on if we didn't have our guide with us. The time we spent visiting was used fully and possibly could easily be expanded as there was a lot more to learn about both sites. Following the visit our driver suggested a break and a traditional meal and wine tasting at a small farm located at the foothills of Vesuvius. Again,this was thoroughly enjoyable. Alfonso was a good company and an attentive guide. Thank you. You both made our trip really special.
