Deep dive into Michelangelo's process

This was such a unique and awesome tour! The thing to know first is this is a deep dive into Michelangelo's artistic style and perspective evolution. Personally, I wanted to do something different than walk around the whole museum with a big group and cover too many works of art to really remember any of it. This tour was perfect! It was like being in Mario's masterclass on Michelangelo. It was also super interactive, and I was really impressed that Mario learned everyone's names and made sure to include everyone individually in the conversation. One member of the group was even live translating Mario's commentary into Chinese on her phone. When he found out, he invited her to stand next to him through the rest of the tour so the translation would pick up his words better. There was also a child in the group, and while I wouldn't necessarily recommend the tour for kids since it is pretty intellectual and philosophical, Mario did an excellent job keeping the kid engaged. Highly recommend for a very unique and fascinating tour with a fantastic and extremely knowledgeable guide!

We had a great experience with our guide Mario Gesu. He was very informed, entertaining and included the members of our group in his very instructional tour of the David and Michelangelo’s works. He didn’t just describe the statue but instead educated us as to the reasons behind Michelangelo’s work. He made us think as to what Michelangelo thought process was as he created his masterpiece. He is obviously very passionate about his subject and has researched the background thoroughly. The lesson we learned - or rather reconfirmed as we have done other tours over the years is the value of having a guided tour. We would not have gotten as much from going to the Museum and seeing the works without a good guide. Mario excelled and we are the better for it. It was well worth the additional cost.

I did not realize that after you pay the Viator fee, you still need to pay 20 euros to enter the museum. It was expensive. I liked the guide, Mario, he was passionate, but I also wanted to know more about the art in general. What he had to say was philosophical and interesting, however.

First, let me say that the museum was small but awesome! To see the David in person was amazing and inspiring. Honestly, pictures in a book or online don't do it justice! The experience was well worth the investment. Second, the 3-star review is a mixed review. My wife enjoyed herself. I didn't. Last, the tour guide was a nice guy and very personable. He was on time. And he got us in without any issues. So, why the three stars??? Because the guide made the tour more about him and his theories about Michaelangelo. Not about the history and the art. And he continued to tell us to pay attention to him instead of looking around at the art... the entire reason I was there!!! Like my wife, some people will enjoy this tour. However, some of you will not. It just depends on your reason for going to that museum. Her rating is a four star. Mine is a two star. Hence the three stars.

We learned so much on this guided tour about the life and works of Michelangelo. Our guide Mario gave us a much more interesting and insightful tour than you would get just be visiting the museum on your own. Mario is so passionate about the art and the history that it shows in his explanations and storytelling making the information so much easier to digest. Mario even makes an exceptional effort to use and remember everyone in the tours name making for a more personal and interactive tour. Definitely worth the time and money.

Good for last minute tickets

The tour could be great. Mario is nice and energetic. The description said it will start at 9:30 sharp. Unfortunately, we did not get into the museum until 10:15. Waiting 45 minutes for a skip the line tour is not acceptable. Instead of seeing most of the exhibits, it focuses on David and you miss other things. We stepped away because we wanted to walk around David to see it from many angles. We also ended a little early so we could see the rest of the museum before heading out.

Not what we expected

We have absolutely loved all the tours we have booked through Viator but this one with Mario was not what we expected. It started at 11 but we didn’t even have our tickets to get in line until 11:20. We got into the gallery at 11:30 and Mario quickly took us to see the David and then took us back to a bench at the beginning of the hallway to sit us down. Here, he preached his own philosophy which was extremely repetitive. All we wanted to do was see the pieces in the museum and learn about the history of each one. He was more interested in sharing his own thoughts and calling on people in the group to answer his questions. At 12:30, we decided there was no way we would get through the museum and make our next tour, so we gave our headsets back and listened to our own Rick Steves audio tour. It was so much better and more informative! I think Mario had an alternative motive for doing this tour - he wanted to try to sell his draft of his book and other private tours he offers. If you’re looking for something like that, this may be your tour, but it wasn’t for us. We also had to give him an additional 40€ for our two tickets which was in the description so not a surprise but it ended up being a pretty pricey tour to skip out on because it just wasn’t what we expected. The museum and the David were amazing and we were so glad we saw it - just wouldn’t recommend doing this version of the tour.

This isn't a tour like the others; it's completely different from what we call "standard" tours, where a list of artworks is presented, as can easily be found with an audio guide, as you did at the end of your visit to the Accademia. To appreciate this tour, you must be willing to delve deeply into the work of the greatest artist of all time, discovering a splendid message of life (which is repeated throughout all his work—from David to the Sistine Chapel). Fortunately your experience is a rare one because with 900 five star reviews, my business on Viator and Tripadvisor is ranked fourth out of 1,170 businesses in Florence!
