Itinerary

Join your guide in central Budapest and head toward the Seventh District, the epicenter of the Jewish community and a hotspot with locals and visitors alike. Your guide will discuss the history of the area as you go, from its medieval roots to its transformation into a ghetto during World War II. Hear how the remaining community set the foundations for the popular scene it is today, with lively bars, restaurants and myriad tributes to its previous generations.

Continue on to see Europe’s largest synagogue, the Moorish-style Dohány Street Synagogue. You’ll pause to view important Jewish monuments from the WWII that pay homage to the millions of lives lost.

Then discover the local cuisine, stopping at eateries for savory tastes of sausage and goose crackling or sweet treats like turos taska and flodni. The exact tasting menu for your tour will vary depending on the day. After satiating your palette, you’ll explore the street art of the neighborhood and chic shops that give the area its trendy reputation.

Then it’s time for a traditional Jewish lunch. Your guide will take you to a restaurant for a hot helping of solet, a Hungarian take on bean stew, and goose soup. Your meal will also be complemented with a smooth glass of wine. After a delicious meal and good conversation, you’ll head to a coffee bar to rejuvenate, followed by some kosher pálinka at one of the city’s hip ruin pubs or a local wine bar.

After this stop your tour will conclude, and your guide will provide additional recommendations for exploring on your own.

Eszter is an amazing tour guide. We learned so much about the Jewish history in Hungary as we walked the area and stopped for traditional Jewish foods along the way. Eszter kept it interesting and was patient with our many questions. She kindly gave us a list of recommendations tailored to our stay. Excellent experience!

Orsi gave us an amazing tour - furthering our education in Budapest. Her knowledge gave us a deeper understanding of the city's history and culture. Her food choices were incredible. We thoroughly enjoyed this culture & cuisine tour to further our experience in Budapest.

This was a wonderful tour!! Anna was extremely knowledgeable about history and cuisine. We really enjoyed our time with her and learning about Hungarian Jewish history. Plus, the matza ball soup was AMAZING!! Would highly recommend this tour, especially with Anna!

She was knowledgable and so considerate. Information included not just Jewish history but also history of Budapest and Hungary. The best experience we could have hoped for.

Fantastic! Great experience and value

Linda B, Jun 2019
This tour was spectacular. We did ours on a Saturday (Sabbath) so the main synagogue and museum, etc. was closed (we toured it a different day, knowing that in advance) but we walked around the area (which is filled with interesting places and historic markers, etc.), and our guide pointed out many fascinating and historic details. We ate different foods at a variety of Jewish-associated places (coffee, sweets, beers, lunch that included matzo ball soup, cholent, brisket, etc.) wine, etc. Our guide was great - very well informed, very fluent in English, completing graduate studies in Jewish history, very accommodating, spent extra time with us, etc.) A great value and a highlight of our trip. Highly recommend.

The tour was excellent. Our guide was on time and very informative. We were shown many of the sites in the Jewish area. The food tastings were varied and very good food. It was the highlight of our stay in Budapest. We learned about the entire city not just the Jewish neighborhood. Our guide gave us feel for the people of Budapest.

This Walking Tour, with our guide Daniel, was a highlight of our 2 week holiday. He took us to some amazing spots and to one of our favorite restaurants, Fulemule Etterem. The food was very comforting and the history humbling. We would highly recommend this tour to anyone who is interested in Budapest's Best!

The tour was excellent. Dora had an enormous amount of information to share with us and the food tastings were great. Definitely recommend as a way to see the Jewish Quarter with an added touch the food. We were a party of 3 and there was another person that was part of our tour as well. Definitely recommend.

Anna was an outstanding guide. The tour lasted about 6 hours and included stops at different synagogues, historical sites and several charning authentic Hungarian restaurants, cafes and wine bar. Eat a light breakfast because you want to be able to enjoy all of the delicious food on the tour. Note that this tour does not include a tour of the largest/oldest synagogue in Budapest with the organ so plan that separately reviewed separately by me in Tripadvisor. Enjoy!

We really enjoyed this tour. It is expensive, but you get great value from an experienced and knowledgable local guide and lots of good food thrown in. We were the only two booked on the day we went, so it was in effect personalised and tailored to our interests. The history and the cultural narrative is fascinating and it was a treat to see the Orthodox synagogue complex. The entrance fee for the Great Synagogue is not included in the price, but we were so inspired by the tour that we went back to visit it on another day. And the tips about other places to visit, things to eat and books to read were much appreciated. Thank you.

We were the only 2 people on the tour and the guide was really excellent and very knowledgable. She ensured that we saw everything we were interested in seeing, and went out of her way to make it a memorable experience. On the downside, the food we were given just snacks was very disappointing as none of it was particularly Jewish food and it was not very tasty so not as described when we booked the tour.

Steven J, Aug 2015
We loved it. Anna was our tour guide and she spoke in detail not only about the history of Budapest particularly Jews in Budapest and the origin of the foods all of which was excellent but she gave an irreverent insider's view of the city and country today. All in all it was an outstanding experience.

What a treat! It ended up being just my wife and me, and our lovely guide walked us arround, rain notwithstanding, for closer to 5-6 hours than less. Great talks, a really interesting visit, good food, lots of inspiration for the rest of our four days in Budapest. We highly recommend this tour and suggest to do it on your first day, it litterally opened the gates of the city to us.
