Disappointment

Marcia_K, Apr 2026
We were all very disappointed with our tour. Our promised itinerary was never delivered; we only saw two of the three synagogues, never went to the shoes memorial, nor had the opportunity to taste flodini. Our guide was excellent - very knowledgeable, personable, and easy to understand. Another issue was that we never received the senior discount as advertised. After numerous calls to Viator agents, we were told that they “would get back to us,” but they never did. We feel we were wrongly overcharged (especially since we never experienced the entire itinerary), and would not recommend this tour.

Response from Host, Apr 2026

Thank you for your feedback and for your kind words about the guide. However, we would like to clarify a few important inaccuracies in your review. The tour you booked was the 2-hour 45-minute program, which includes entry to the Dohány Street Synagogue, as clearly stated in the itinerary. This program does not include a visit to the Shoes on the Danube Bank, as that is part of a different tour. We have also carefully reviewed your reservation and correspondence, which confirm that 4 standard adult tickets were purchased. While a senior discount option is available during booking, it was not selected. Additionally, the flódni tasting is listed as an optional extra at additional cost, and since it was not requested, it was not included during the tour. We would also like to highlight that if anything during the tour does not meet expectations or seems different from the description, it is important to inform the guide on the spot. In many cases, adjustments can be made immediately. After the tour has ended, however, our ability to address such concerns is very limited. For this reason, we are unsure why these issues were not raised during the tour itself. We always value feedback, but we believe reviews should accurately reflect the experience based on the booked program. In this case, the tour was delivered as described. Kind regards, Fungarian

We had a 2.5 hour tour with Petra. She was great. She met us at our hotel, answered lots of our questions, even if they were asking about statues and buildings that were along our route but not part of the tour. She was very friendly and knowledgeable. We took the metro from the Jewish quarter to the shoes on the Danube with her and she helped us understand the metro so we could do it on our own. Highly recommend

Pieter Bruisma's Jewish Heritage Tour - the one to take!

OA_B, Jun 2025
Peter provided us an excellent understanding of the history of the Jewish community in Budapest. We felt that through his selected itinerary and insights we were able to gain so much more of an understanding of the culture, beyond just the synagogues. An in depth exploration at a comfortable pace and an interesting dialogue - so much better than a canned group tour monologue. Well worth the money.

Response from Host, Jun 2025

Dear Guest, Thank you very much for your kind words and thoughtful feedback! We’re delighted to hear that Peter’s historical knowledge and carefully selected itinerary helped you gain a deeper understanding of the Jewish community’s past and culture in Budapest. We're especially pleased that you appreciated the more personal, conversational style of the tour compared to a typical group monologue. We hope to welcome you again in the future! Best regards, The Fungarian Team

The way it was personalized.

Eileen_Z, Jun 2025
A personal look at how families lived between WWI and WW2. A history lesson not found in typical tours.

Response from Host, Jun 2025

Dear Eileen, Thank you so much for choosing us, and for taking the time to leave a review – it truly means a lot to us. We're glad we could offer you a unique and personal insight that goes beyond the typical tour experience. Exploring how families lived between the two World Wars is indeed a lesser-known yet deeply human side of history, and we're happy to hear it resonated with you. We hope to see you again on one of our programs! Wishing you all the best, The Fungarian Team

Great historical tour

Abbey_B, Nov 2024
This was an amazing tour. Our guide was fabulous. While today you can’t see what the Jewish quarter looked like, you can imagine it through the stories told. The visit to the tenement Synagogue was very moving.

Response from Host, Jun 2025

Thank you very much for the wonderful feedback! We’re delighted to hear that you had a fantastic experience on the tour and that the guide helped make it truly memorable. Although the original appearance of the Jewish Quarter has changed over time, we strive to bring its rich history and stories to life, helping visitors imagine and connect with the past. We are especially glad that the visit to the tenement synagogue left such a deep impression on you — it is truly a place full of profound history and emotion. We hope the tour provided valuable insight into the heritage and spirit of the community, and we look forward to welcoming you on another historical journey.

Really worth it

Wonderful Guide with Personal Stories to Relate

Denise_A, Sep 2024
We had a wonderful tour with Kata! She was so knowledgable and personable and has personal experience with being a Hungarian Jew herself. We especially appreciated her personal story of how her family has been affected by the Holocaust and Soviet occupation and how she is now raising her daughter in the Jewish culture of Hungary. The private tour was so worth it, especially since we were under a deadline to get back to our ship. I wish we had had another hour to spend with Kata. She was delightful.

Our experience with Miklos was informative and deeply meaningful for us. We spent time at 3 synagogues and had time for discussion and even a little shopping. He was insightful and quite expert on the subject , a kind and pleasant gentleman . We HIGHLY recommend this tour !

An Essential Tour of the Jewish Quarter with a Great Educator

Janice_S, Sep 2023
We had Miklos (Fungarian) as our private guide and he was really great in sharing lots of information and experience. I really appreciated the first question he asked us which was why we wanted to do this tour (we are non-Jewish). I loved how he wove the history of the Jewish people in Hungary as distinct from elsewhere. We visited the three synagogues, each with different architecture and serving a different Jewish branch or sect, all the while explaining these differences. It was an incredibly moving tour passing the Carl Lutz Memorial, passing Herzl Square, visiting the Cemetery and stopping at the Raoul Wallenberg Holocaust Memorial Park where the names of those Jews executed are recorded on the metal leaves of the Weeping Willow orTree of Life (also learning that well known Hungarian Jewish people such as Tony Curtis and Estee Lauder have contributed to the quarter and its creation). As well, there is a memorial to Wallenberg and other Righteous Among the Nations. The whole experience is a wake-up call in these turbulent times. We finished the tour at a nearby cafe where we had the chance to discuss the situation in Israel with Miklos. A wonderful guide (and retired educator) who gave us a warm welcome and many insights, including a take-away Hungarian Jewish History summary which I really appreciated.

Response from Host, Sep 2023

Dear Janice, Thank you very much for taking the time to sum up the essence of the short very contentful time we managed to spend together. As you said the contribution of the Jewish community to the 19th century development of this beautiful city is enormous. No wonder Pest became an attractive place to live for newcomers as well so much that in the late 1890s Pest's Jewish population exceeded 25%. I hope you will come back for another tour, this city has so much to offer. Best, Miklós

Jewish Heritage of Budapest Private tour

Rene_N, Sep 2023
If you would ike a tour visiting the main jewish synagogues with a few additional locations and general infromaion, this is the tour for you. I would have like more in depth information of what the jewish people did to protect themselves, stories of incidences that happened, the processes that took place, etc. A more heartfelt experience. We did not receive any handouts or beverage as indicated. Overall a so-so experience.

Response from Host, Sep 2023

Dear Rene, I appreciate your words and sorry if you left dissatisfied. Actually, as the title says, it's a Jewish Heritage tour, i.e. the history of Hungarian Jewry in historical context. What you refer to is stories of Holocaust. But as you learnt, that's the paradox, Hungarian Jews did not do much to defend themselves since they were loyal citizens and did not ever imagine that the Hungarian State would betray them. I take your advice and try to bring some colourful stories into the narrative. Sorry about the handout, I simply forgot to give it to you. I always offer guests to have a drink and wrap up but sometimes they prefer to leave. I am sorry if the latter happened in your case. Miklós

Interesting and thought provoking.

Steven_L, May 2023
Guide presented knowledge including both facts and opinions. The historical information he provided was both helpful and enlightening. That helped us to contextualize the information and caused us to have additional discussions after the tour itself.

Response from Host, May 2023

Thank you for your feedback. Glad to meet your expectations. Miklós

Simply the best way to learn and explore!

Ilene_P, Apr 2023
This was such an amazingly informative tour - there is no better way to see and learn. Highly recommend!

Response from Host, Apr 2023

Dear Ilene, Thank you for this laconic and very appreciative comment. I hope you will come back for more tours. Best, Miklós

Amy G, Sep 2017
My guide was incredibly knowledgeable in the history of the city. He also was sensitive to the areas that I wanted to see. He went over the top in showing me so many additional things that I would never have known about without his knowledge. We had coffee and pastry in a very special cafe as well. It was a wonderful tour. I highly recommend this to anyone interested in the Jewish history of Budapest.
