Tarragona is a fascinating location, the one-time capital of the Romans in Spain some 2,000 years ago. Much has been preserved, not only of the Romans but also of the city's Medieval heritage. A great add-on for any trip to Barcelona. Guide Ramon was top-notch, a veritable Wikipedia of cultural and historical lore about the region...and he'll include some real estate tips!

Do Not Book This

Kim_H, Mar 2026
We lost a day of our Barcelona visit doing this tour. Viator double charges this - don’t book through them. We overpaid an extraordinary amount without realizing how limited this experience would also be. Our tour guide was kind but knew almost no history and had no idea how to tour the area. We got lost numerous times. This was a total waste of money and our time.

Great tour!

Excellent guide! He provided transport to/from our hotel, arrived early, contacted us ahead of time to ensure smooth pick up and concluded the tour on schedule. He provided a great deal of historical information about the site! It was a wonderful trip!

Opportunity to see Roman Ruins Near Barcelona!

Danny_S, Nov 2024
We enjoyed our private tour to see Roman Ruins in Tarragona. Ramon provided great insight into the ancient Roman City. We are glad we had the opportunity to take this tour with Ramon!

Do not go on Sundays

Vanessa_B, May 2024
Do not book this trip on a Sunday! Everything is closed on Sundays, you can’t go in and it’s a scam, to be honest. Unless you pay really cheap, don’t do it. The tour guide Ramon is the best though, the company is a scam but the tour guide that works there is truly the best, if you can ask for him, do it!

Excellent

Ramon was a very knowledgeable guide. I recommend a tour with a knowledgeable guide that can show where the ruins are and how the current town has built up on top of them.

A beautiful town

My mom and I LOVED Tarragona! Our guide Eduardo was super informative and it is an interesting place to visit

Beautiful and historic city by the sea

Karen_H, Sep 2023
Beautiful Justicia ancient city by the sea. Ramon was very knowledgeable about the city and could point out evidence of the past in the modern structures. We would never have noticed these on our own

Great Day in Tarragona

Amy_B, Aug 2023
Ramon picked us up at the hotel right on time. He had a good plan for the day. The site was about an hour or so away. We made a pit stop along the way. The first site we saw was the quarry, then we saw then the aqueduct and the town. We were lucky we had great weather. There is a lot of walking on this tour so be prepared. Ramon gave us great explanations about the sites. We stopped at Sitges on the way back and had lunch. It was a great tour and Ramon was a great guide.

Amazing Tarragona

Kingshuk_M, Feb 2023
It was one of the best day trip we had and Kurt Jaime is the perfect man to look for. In Out Barcelona Tours. Kurt was fantastic while the drive, knows exact where to stop & exactly what are the places to show. He ensured we had the best experience of Tarragona while knowing it’s rich history along with trip. A must do. I would suggest Half Day as rest of the day we explored Barcelona so it was absolutely worth it. Once again Kurt, you are the best.

I enjoyed seeing the amphitheater, though I was disappointed that it wasn't possible to go down into it. The walls and circus were also very interesting. Our guide, Mariusz, was excellent.

Great Roman ruins outside Barcelona

Sanjay_C, Oct 2022
Worthwhile trip out of Barcelona if you like Roman history and live Roman ruins. Guide Nuria was knowledgeable and friendly. Took enough time to explain everything. On time.

Terrific tour

We enjoyed our trip and our guide (Mr. Andre) hasba vast knowledge of the city. He made the tour worth it.

Tarragona

Candice H, Aug 2019
This tour is a must of you are staying in Barcelona for a few days. The maximum number of people on this tour was eight. Tarragona is a one hour drive from Barcelona. However, the area we travelled through made the travel time seem a lot less. Our guide was excellent and his passion of the history showed through his narrative. Walking into the theatre where the chariot races took place gave me goose bumps.

Wonderful visit to Tarragona!

Jeanne_R, Jul 2019
This trip was a very informative and interesting visit to the ancient Roman capital of the area. The visit to the Roman aqueduct, the amphitheater, and Roman Circus were facinating!

Tarragona

As four senior women traveling to Spain with a national tour group, we wanted to see more of Barcelona than what was provided by the regular tour. We extended our stay in Barcelona and contracted with Viator for additional tours. Tarragona was one of our choices. We were not disappointed. We were picked up at our hotel by Nuria, a knowledgeable and lively guide. The car was comfortable, air-conditioned (a must as it was hot and humid) and well-kept. Nuria was a confident and safe driver. She maneuvered the city streets of Barcelona and the highways to Tarragona while narrating about he sights, history and local on goings. We stopped at notable ancient Roman ruins on e way to Tarragona. Upon arrival in Tarragona, Nuria accompanied us through the ruins and identified where existing buildings covered ancient ruins and we travelled through the centuries with her. Because the Fest was in full swing on this Sunday, we witnessed the human tower. So exciting! Nuria helped us maneuver through the crowds safely. It was a memorable day.

Tarragona half day excellent

Good place to see ruins and learn about Roman culture. Our guide Kirk was very informative with a unique sense of humor. He also stopped along the way to show us an aqueduct and let us take photos. Would recommend this tour!

Our 1/2 day trip to Tarragon was fantastic! Our guide, Vicente and driver were outstanding. Tarragona is a lovely Roman city by the Mediterranean Sea. Our day started with my wife and I being picked up from our hotel and from there we went to pickup another couple. The six of us then proceeded to Tarragona a out 45-60 minute ride. On the way into Tarragona, Vicente pulled over to view a 2,000 year old Roman aqueduct and to our great surprise, we stopped and were then able to walk along the top of the aqueduct! We then proceeded into the city of Tarragona for our city tour. Vicente provided great historical information for context and backdrop as we walked through the streets of this Roman fortress city. We spent from 9am - 3pm for this tour no lunch provided but then none was expected. Upon being dropped off to our hotel we said our thanks and goodbyes to all. A highlight of our brief time in Barcelona we have visited this city many times. I highly recommend this tour.

My wife and i had a half-day tour to Tarragona and thoroughly enjoyed it. Though we were booked on a group tour, we two happened to be the only guests that day, so it became a Private Tour!! We were picked up on time by Kurt on time and drove to Tarragona. The city is know for its Roman ruins, which have been preserved very carefully by the authorities. You can see a Colosseum where, animal fights were held in the third century. Besides that we also enjoyed walking through the ruins of the fort, from where the view of the colosseum and the sea in breathtaking. Kurt was a very knowledgeable and helpful guide. I would strongly recommend to spend half a day visiting Tarragona if you are in Barcelona any time.

First, it is important to know that this was not a half-day trip. We were picked up at 9:00 and did not return until 4:30. It's up to you to decide if Roman ruins are that important to you, but we had other plans for the afternoon that we missed. Even then, we felt rushed at each stop. That may have partly been because we were reluctant to get back into the car as we were four North Americans squeezed into a little car with the guide. The varied sights were interesting, and Tarragona is a beautiful location on the beach. Our guide was knowledgable. She was also kind enough to help me with a stop at the pharmacy.

This tour was amazing - esp. because of our guide Nuria who was extremely knowledgeable about all the sights and went out of her way to make our day extra special. We recommend that tourists request Nuria for their next tour - Tarragona or other. The sites: spectacular and well worth visiting.

The ruins here were amazing. It was very interesting to see what was clearly once an important Roman city. Very different than other cities that we visited in Catalonia. We also really liked that it was such a small group, only 5. I can't imagine walking around with a larger group.

Great tour!! We actually met up with this tour in Tarragona since we were staying close by. Our tour guide Vincente was excellent!! We learned so much about this city and it's history!

Christopher B, May 2017
The highlight of this tour is definitely the aqueduct outside of town that also has a bridge across the top. You can walk across the aqueduct and around it. It's really the nicest one I've seen, though the one in Segovia is comparable. However, you cannot walk on that one. The Roman quarry is also interesting. The ruins in Tarragona of the circus and amphitheatre are nothing special, you can see better preserved amphitheatres in Italy.

Mark_S, May 2017
One is always worried about the experience one will receive on a tour. Will there be so many people I won't be able to hear what the guide is explaining? Will our group slow us down so we won't see everything in time? Well, when we booked this tour for April 2017, our guide Kurt, surprised us pleasantly when he told us no one else had booked that day besides my wife and me. So it was just the three of us. Kurt took us in an SUV to Tarragona while sharing his wealth of knowledge about Catalonia. We visited the stunning aqueduct outside of town before rolling into town on St. George's Day. The main drag was filled with booths selling roses and book, which are the traditional gifts on Catalonia's patron saint's day. We reached the beach and viewed the amphitheater before heading to the ruins of the circus where there is a museum. Kurt provided constant information about the Roman empire on the Iberian peninsula. As it was a half-day tour, we finished just as we were getting hungry in the city's plaza in front of city hall, where we treated our guide to a lovely lunch while he regaled us with more information about that part of Spain. I don't expect everyone will luck out and get a private tour for a small-group price, but I would recommend it as it was worth seeing another town so close to Barcelona.

Great trip to a wonderful old town. We enjoyed the various Roman ruins in the area and the views of the Mediterranean. Our guide provided us with a lot of history while we toured and gave us enough time to explore on our own, as well.

Perfect tour for people with a particular interest in ancient Roman ruins. Very personable and informative tour guide Nuria--probably should have booked the full-day tour to do complete justice to the area, but as it happened, the half-day tour worked well with the weather on that particular day.
