Overview
Catch a wave of excitement as you learn to surf during this beginner’s, small-group, lesson in Maui. Join no more than five other students for an introduction to the fundamentals of surfing, including ocean awareness, water safety, riding skills, and proper etiquette. You’re guaranteed to be surfing in one easy lesson, or your next lesson is free. An instructor, surfboard and rash guard are all included.

The surf experience was great. The waves were perfect for learning. Both my son and daughter were able to get up on their boards and the photographer caught everything!

The surfing was fun but we did not have the best instructor, he was not super helpful especially if you are a first-timer like ourselves. He did not explain instructions very well and was not helpful once we were in the ocean what so ever. We actually had a local who helped us more. There was a photographer however and she was great. Overall I would not recommend this to someone or do it again.

We highly recommend using Maui Surf Shop. Our kids had never surfed before and their instructor Bear was amazing with them. He made sure they had a wonderful experience and over all it was fun for them.

Ivan was wonderful! My family of 4 (including 2 kids) all had so much fun and felt safe. We were all able to stand up within the first couple of tries. It was a fun new experience for all of us. We can’t wait to do it again!

I had my first surfing experience in Kihei, and it was such a great experience! I had no experience or knowledge about surfing, but Austin was an amazing instructor—very patient, helpful, and encouraging. He explained everything clearly and made me feel comfortable on the board. I learned so much and had a lot of fun. Definitely recommend! 🌺🏄♀️🤙

My kid had so much fun learning how to surf, and the instructors were great! The kids were actually able to stand up multiple times on the board, which was so cool! Definitely recommend this company. They were awesome.

He had an amazing time. Check in process was super simple and Ivan was a great teacher. Patient and really attentive. Making sure we are getting back and riding as many waves as we could pack into the lessons. Great energy from everyone we interacted with. Great day.

The surf lessons were exactly what we hoped. Super simple, had a great instructor (Mike) who was patient and kind.
We felt super safe, even though the waves were a little bit bigger and the wind was early. The photo package was reasonable and you get all photos for keeps.
Although very busy, the surf schools all work together to be sure that the groups were scheduled in such a way that everyone gets a turn, safely.
The time spent in the water was perfect.

Perfect for beginners! Our family of 8 were a little nervous before our session- but as soon as we met our instructors, Sofia and Austin, we were immediately put at ease.
They were patient, informative and enthusiastic- getting just as excited for us as we were when we caught a good wave.
This was the highlight of our trip and I highly recommend!

These guys absolutely live up to the hype and all of the amazing reviews! A huge shoutout to Jeremiah and Mariano, our two instructors. Neither of us had ever surfed before, but they made the learning process incredibly easy. They quickly explained the fundamentals, had us practice on the beach, and then got us out on the water in perfect conditions.
Thanks to their coaching, we were catching some smooth waves very quickly. As our confidence grew, they gradually let us venture farther from shore while constantly keeping an eye on us, offering encouragement and giving simple, effective tips that made every ride even better.
You can tell these guys genuinely love what they do and want everyone to succeed. They made us feel safe and confident. This was without a doubt the highlight of our trip to Maui.
If you’re even thinking about taking a surf lesson, book it—you won’t regret it. You do not need prior experience. And if you have the chance to surf with Jeremiah and Mariano, you’re in the best hands. You guys were awesome. Mahalo!

Uncle Mike did a FANTASTIC job teaching our boys to surf for the first time! They loved every minute of being out on the waves! The photos were a great extra to add on too; you won’t be disappointed if you book with Surf Shack!

This was my grandson’s activity. He was so nervous to do this but after meeting Mike and the safety lesson, he was so excited. Mike aka Uncle Mike was incredible in his instruction and making the students comfortable. For a kid that didn’t want to do it at all bc he was so scared, he was wanting to go surfing every day after his lesson with Mike. The girls that do the check in and photography was awesome too. Over all a terrific experience. Would definitely recommend it.

Surf Shack was very professional and organized in how they ran their process. They split us up into smaller groups of 5 (my group had 5 anyway) so that we had more attention from each of our individual guides. Our guide, Mike, was awesome. He was very thorough and knowledgeable, and made sure we understood everything we needed to in order to have a fun and safe time... thank you, Mike! They had someone take photos of the experience which were available for purchase afterward, I decided to purchase the full package and got accused of using AI to generate them by friends... that's how good they were! (or how much they didn't believe I could surf lol)
The only thing I wish is that the waves we surfed were a little bigger, but that's beyond anyone's control. It was also a bit crowded at the spot we surfed but it's Maui in June so to be expected. All-in-all the experience gets a well-deserved 5-stars and we recommend Surf Shack to anyone who wants a great first-time surfing experience!
