What are people saying about Akureyri

The activity itself was...
The activity itself was perfect. Our issue was that Viator had us booked as a 9:00am bus tour and in fact it was an 8am tour. Not sure what happened there. Luckily we were able to go on the noon tour and the local company was wonderful about rebooking us. In the future, if I can book directly with the company I will.

Excellent trip - beware the midges!
Excellent trip! Easy to find the Imagine Cruising chalet at the port. Efficiently organised onto mini bus. Our driver/guide Johannes, was brilliant and made the day very enjoyable. He is obviously (rightly) extremely proud of his home island. The scenery was absolutely beautiful, helped by the sunshine.
Only word of warning, beware the midges! They don't bite but are very persistent and seem to love tourists! If you can get a head covering net, it would save a lot of flapping!
This was the best organised of the three Viator trips we have done this holiday

Great tour. Whale went full breach.
Great excursion we booked via aviator at half the cost of the cruise excursion. Walkable from the port. Not too long and not too short. I know we’re not promised to see whales, but we were so lucky! We saw two whales and one went up and flipped over twice!!! Full breach. It was great. My daughter loved it as well.

Wonderful Small Group Shore Excursion
Our guide and driver Marika was amazing and very knowledgeable. All of the stops were well timed so we were leaving before the large cruise buses arrived. It was a great tour with beautiful varied sites. The vehicle was comfortable and clean. Wonderful Shore Excursion!

Lake Myvatn and 3 Waterfalls Tour
Fantastic tour. It’s a long day, but definitely worth it if you want to see the key places in the area in one tour. Lake Myvatn was a bit of a let down but that was probably because of the flies and also because the waterfalls and the geothermal fumaroles were so amazing.
Big shout out to Graham the tour guide!! His knowledge of the area and Iceland in general is outstanding. It takes great skill to talk for 8 hours while keeping everyone interested. Graham has that skill. He is a credit to your Business and made the whole day so much more enjoyable. He even supplied us all with nets for the areas known to have flies. All in all this was an excellent tour and I would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Akureyri. 5 stars!! Thank You!

Great tour of the falls and turf house with Jan
This was a very good tour because of the driver/guide. Jan was informative and definitely knew the area. The falls were excellent and the turf house was fascinating. You can leave off the Christmas House.;Too commercial and expensive. All in all a very good tour. Ask for Jan (Juhan/ John).

Godafoss Waterfall Trip Was Wonderful
We thoroughly enjoyed this excursion. Being picked up at the cruise terminal made it even better. Our tour guide Peter was knowledgable and made our trip even better by changing the sequence of the itinerary. We stopped at the Godafoss waterfalls early in the day to take advantage of the sunshine and the amount of visitors.
Thank you Peter for a wonderful day!

Good Akureryi Iceland Tour
This tour stopped at four places: the Dimmuborgir lava spires, the Gjaldskylda hot springs, Myvatn, and Godagoss waterfall. Tour transportation was by bus and included a lunch that consisted of a sandwich and bottle of water. Pick up spot was a short walk from the cruise ship. Tour cost much less than the excursions available from the cruise ship.

We were well looked after
It was a great tour. We later did a Diamond Tour too, so there was a bit of overlap. But we were very glad to have done this one too, to see some more points of interest around the Myvatn Lake, like the pseudocraters and the Dimmuborgir lava formations.
The tour was well organised, although we had to wait quite a long time for pick-up. That was because the cruise ship had moored away from the harbour, so tour passengers from there (we weren't on the ship) had to be brought to shore on a boat. I don't think The Traveling Viking could have done anything about it. They were very friendly and helpful when we rang them. They also communicated well before the tour, when they got in touch to discuss whether we wanted to go on the German or the English tour (we didn't mind, and were placed into the German one).
The tour guide was very good and gave us loads of information. We were puzzled because she occasionally struggled to find a German word but on the other hand had no accent whatsoever. It all made sense when she told us that she spent her early childhood in Germany but hadn't used her German much since then. The lack of an accent made it really easy to understand her, compared to other tour guides. We also felt that she looked after us exceptionally well, taking a lot of precautions to prevent loosing anybody or for anyone to get hurt (we were well warned of the dangers of the hot sulphur pits at Hverir!).

This tour was fantastic!...
This tour was fantastic! Our guide was so knowledgable and kept it fun for us. It was her birthday, and she even brought cake to share with us! She was so informative, so personable, and the tour was absolutely fantastic. Highlight of our time in Iceland!

Incredible landscapes
The tour is a good one for those arriving at the port of Akureyri . The pickup was seamless. Our visit to Lake Myvatn , where there are midges, gave us an opportunity to see the Earth Lagoon and a lunch break at the cafeteria there. We had the very delicious smoked trout on lava bread. The lava fields (sulfur) were amazing as was the landscape of the Dark Forest. It was also interesting to see the rift that divides Eurasia and North America. Our guide and driver were very good.

Great tour - over emphasized the boat discomfort
We had a great time whale watching on the rib boat. We saw 2 whales a humpback and a minkie. The boat captain and guide were so great!!!
I feel like they overemphasized the concerns with impact on the body from the boat ride. We were a little concerned about how they described it since my husband had a vertebra fusion 6 months ago. We had never been on a rib boat but we have been on multiple zodiacs. For us, it was no different from any other small boat ride.
This was a very dry boating experience. The suits are flotation suits not to keep you from getting wet like we have had on other whale watching trips.

Not seeing something you are looking for?
Akureyri sits in Iceland’s northern fjords, making it the ideal starting point to explore what’s known as the Diamond Circle, which includes Lake Mývatn, formed by a volcanic eruption, the waterfalls of Goðafoss and Dettifoss, and the whale-watching town of Húsavík. With its hot springs, bubbling mud pools, and lava formations, this region will fascinate even the most seasoned traveler. Akureyri day trips ensure you can experience these diverse landscapes with ease, thanks to organized transport and guides sharing history and folklore along the way.
