Overview

Discover the scenic Wachau region of Austria along the Danube river with this guided tour from Vienna. Travel from Vienna to the medieval village of Dürnstein and hike up to its castle ruins for sweeping views of the Danube and the surrounding green hills. Learn about the castle’s history and King Richard the Lionheart’s imprisonment there, before returning to the village to explore more there. There is a limit of four travelers on this tour.

Take the green metro line U4 until its endpoint Huetteldorf. Follow the exit "Keisslergasse" and take the escalator at the end of the aisle. Wait either inside or outside the building (bus terminal). I will meet you there. PS: from Karlsplatz city center it is a 15-minute ride to Huetteldorf!

Karin is an amazing guide; kind, patient and knowledgeable. She took us on a beautiful hike in Wachau to the ruins where Richard the Lionhearted was imprisoned. So breathtaking! And then finishing with a lovely meal at a local establishment to the area. You will not be disappointed! It was truly a fun adventure!

Climbing to castle ruins and Danube overlooks

We hiked up a winding mountain trail with fabulous viewpoints overlooking small towns along the Danube River. One stop was at the ruins of the Durnstein castle. It was a vigorous climb, but well worth the effort! Our guide did an excellent job!
