The difference between a good and a bad tour depends almost entirely on the tour guide. We unfortunately got assigned to a guide that turned this tour into a transfer service. We did not know until after we’re already on our way that it is offered in both English and French, French tourists being the majority. Our guide was an older gentleman that spoke both languages, but he seemed much more fluent in French, as he spoke a lot more of it and delivered it in a much happier demeanor.
When we started the tour the guide basically just said hi and sat down, and the driver drove. He never bothered to give an orientation or a summary for the rest of the day. After we got to the first stop, he told us the name of the place, and what time we need to get back on the bus. That was it.
When we got closer to Duoro Valley he pointed out a few thing occasionally. When he did speak English he spoke in a monotone as if he was simply going through the requirement. Our last stop was the 1-hour River cruise and he didn’t come with us. As you can imagine it was a very quiet 1-hour and no one knew what to look at.
We signed up for a tour with the expectation to learn the history and culture, and be entertained and enlightened by our guide. Unfortunately this tour turned out to be merely a transfer service with a guide whose only function was to shepherd us around making sure we don’t miss the bus. We were very disappointed and thought this tour was a waste of time and money.

This was a great tour, and the guide was a lot of fun! We had a good group of people, who enjoyed each other's company as well. Douro was a beautiful area, and the vineyard tour was good, although it was very, very hot to be walking in the full sun that day! The boat ride was fun too, although it was crowded with other groups on the small boat, and as our group was the last to board, not everyone had a place to sit. Also, we thought beverages would be available for purchase on the boat, and they weren't - disappointing on a hot day.
The roads were very curvy, and although our driver did a pretty good job, the others on the road were a bit scary. Possibly more patrol, which is beyond the control of any tour company would help. Overall, a great trip that I recommend!

The Douro Valley is a must see if going to Porto. And it is beautiful. I had an excellent guide who took us to some really interesting places--towns, wineries, scenic lookouts. This was a very good tour.

Excellent tour, our tour guide Joanna was very knowledgeable and was very attentive to the group. The scenery was gorgeous. Only down side was insufficient breaks at overlooks to get some beautiful shots of the scenery. Port wine tasting was delicious. Would highly recommend. Great way to see the Douro valley.

The tour overall was just OK. The guide was professional but very perfunctory. It kind of feel like she was just doing a job. The lunch included was very good and we got to try some local food. The rest of the tour was a combination of some free time exploring the churches/town we stopped at and going to local wineries for tastings. The information said we can sample local products, which from recollection was just some cheese bits and dried meat and biscuits. There were no explanation given of the products. Overall, it was an average tour - not really good but not really bad.

A lovely day, which for people who don't normally enjoy coach or minibus trips, was a real treat. Our guide Sophia, was charming, attentive and informative, and we had a real insight into the wonderful scenery of the Douro Valley.

Luxury coach turned to be a luxury min van .Wine tasting was only Two Wines !! Scenery was brilliant and the the guide very knowledgeable.
Moral of the story do not believe what you rend on the tour description. !

I'd definitely recommend this tour to anyone visiting Porto.
Our guide Yorick is extremely friendly and knowledgeable. Most importantly, we got to see a completely different scene to city of Porto, a magnificent countryside scenery with all those lovely vineyards and mountains. We really enjoyed the food and the wine as well.

This was NOT the tour we booked. Ended up going to 2 churches and having spaghetti with ground meat (no sauce) for lunch - not sure this is local to Porto? The time we spent in the Douro was in the van. I emailed Viatour and received no response!!!! Very disappointed.

The trip was excellent. The guide named Maria was very nice and friendly. She guided us both in English and French and spoke both languages fluently and clearly. The van was convenient. The places we visited were beautiful and interesting. We stopped for lunch at a very good restaurant with a magnificent view. Everything was beyond my expectations.

The guide was very knowledgeable and a lot of fun. It was an intimate tour with a small group of people, and it was great to only have 6 people in total. The scenery is beautiful, the port and food was fantastic, the towns they take you to, hold a lot of history and made for a memorable trip. Well recommended! Don't miss this one.

A lovely day in the country. Our guide was excellent and informative. It is an amazing region, the scenery, the port, the river - all wonderful. The only negative was that we had booked an english speaking tour and it was a combined English/French which was really annoying after a while having everything repeated in French, as I am sure it was for the French Canadians listening to the English explanations. Apart from this i would recommend this tour to anyone visiting Porto

Even in Winter this tour was amazing. There were only 6 of us and I was told the maximum is 8 people so it's a personalised tour and you don't feel like sheep. We stopped in Amarante and enjoyed some Portuguese cakes, a church and a market. We also stopped at the Nossa Senhora dos Remedios church which was beautiful, make sure you climb up or down all the steps - beautiful surrounding forest!! There were 2 wine tasting stops which were great and a very filling and delicious lunch in Paseo de Regua. We also had a couple of viewing stops to take lovely photos! Our guide was very knowledgable and so friendly!! She answered any questions we had. Overall, the tour was a fun, relaxing day trip which was extremely good value. My boyfriend and I are only 19 and 20, but the other people on the tour were in their 60s and all travellers involved (no matter what their age!) had a ball!

This was a fantastic tour thanks to our very capable driver/tour guide, Claudia. This young lady was both knowledgable and enthusiastic. She effortlessly switched between French and English to ensure all five members of the tour group had a full appreciation of the areas we visited. We stopped at a lovely village for morning tea, the wine and tapas late morning were good, the lunch delicious and the vineyard tour and the port tasting in the afternoon were great. Beautiful scenery and good company made for a very enjoyable day.

This was one of the best day trips I've ever experienced. The guide, Marta, was very knowledgable and personable. She went out of her way to make the day relaxing and full of small, pleasant surprises, like stopping at a roadside stand for a snack of fresh figs. The lunch restaurant was excellent and the length of the tour was just right enought to feel like I got to see everything without being so long that I lost interest.
