Richard is very personable and ever so knowledgeable. He'll make you think about what happened and what might be scenarios to the crimes.
Response from Host, Nov 2025
Thank you so much Linda for that great review. It was a pleasure to have you and Tammy on the tour so I’m delighted that you enjoyed it and took the time to let others know.

The tour was great...very interesting, and Richard shared lots of information. The group size was very conducive for sharing and asking questions.
One suggestion: Break up the amount of time for information sharing. We stood in one spot for long periods of time.
Response from Host, Sep 2025
Thank you George for your review. It was a real pleasure to have your company on Friday.

Richard is so much fun and we had a blast! He gave us so much history around the Jack the Ripper case and it was engaging and fun—even with some heavy material to cover. We loved the small group and the headsets were genius. We didn’t miss a word of Richard’s talk because of that! Two hours went by so quickly—a good walk, a great story, clear passion and work has gone into this. Thanks for a wonderful time!
Response from Host, Jul 2025
Thank you so much for that wonderful review. So good of you to take the time to write it.
Many thanks

We were interested in a small group, but this group had more people than we expected based on the description. I did appreciate the tech (microphone and headphones) used so that we could hear the guide. It was a good setup. The actual experience/tour was not as interactive as we'd hoped, and we definitely felt like we were standing in the same place for a long time. I wished we had brought an option for sitting or that we had stopped in places with options for sitting. I understand people may be looking for different things on these types of tours, but I was confused about why we were hearing about other killers (e.g. a woman who would kill babies she adopted) and actors. I think this guide is excited and wants to do a good job, but is still figuring out the right balance of storytelling, interaction, and being sure that the tour is engaging to a variety of knowledge levels about the topic.

"We were interested in a small group, but this group had more people than we expected based on the description.”
You have not included your name, so I don’t know how many people were on the tour you attended.
However, you left the review on the 19th. The tour is only available on Thursdays and Fridays, so if you were on Thursday the 17th, there were eight people; on Friday, there were 13.
The absolute maximum allowed on my tour is 15.
Jack the Ripper is the most popular tour offered in London, and the most popular tours will frequently have around 40 or more in a group.
“I did appreciate the tech (microphone and headphones) used so that we could hear the guide. It was a good setup.”
Thank you. I only invested in the system in December 2023, but the response I have had has made me wish I had bought it 18 years ago when I began guiding.
“The actual experience/tour was not as interactive as we'd hoped.”
I am always delighted to answer questions, but some groups can be quiet and happy to listen.
"And we definitely felt like we were standing in the same place for a long time. I wished we had brought an option for sitting or stopped in places with options for sitting.”
The first statement on the booking page reads, “This tour lasts 2 hours 15 minutes and is not suitable for people with walking difficulties.” It is in block capitals and suggests a long time on your feet.
“I was confused about why we were hearing about other killers (e.g. a woman who would kill babies she adopted) and actors.”
William Stewart’s book Jack the Ripper: A New Theory was published in 1939. It presented Amelia Dyer, ‘The Baby Farmer of Reading,’ as a suspect in the Jack the Ripper case. We don’t know who the killer was, so we are left with suspects.
I briefly mention the actors Michael Caine and Johnny Depp because the films they are in are how many people first learn about this case.
“I think this guide is excited and wants to do a good job, but is still figuring out the right balance of storytelling, interaction, and being sure that the tour is engaging to a variety of knowledge levels about the topic.”
I can only offer the view of the tour expressed in the review that immediately precedes this one on Viator.
"What a fun tour! As a history lover I really, really enjoyed learning about life in Whitechapel in the late 1800s, and learning about the Jack the Ripper story from the perspective of the poor souls who experienced it, rather than the cartoonish story we normally hear. Our tour guide Richard was a lot of fun and really knowledgeable. If you are looking for a regular old ghost tour I don't know if this is for you, but I consider this so much better.”
More than 180 reviews on Viator, more than 50 on Google and 130 on London Walks give the tour five stars.
I am sorry that you didn’t enjoy it quite as much.
Best Wishes

I have been wanting to visit the UK and tour the infamous Whitechapel neighborhood home to the Jack The Ripper murders since first hearing of the story as a kid. Reading the reviews I was inclined to choose an author of a published book but I ended up choosing Richard's tour for its limited group size and it turned out to be a great choice. He provided good instructions as to where to meet him and he was unmistakable in his signature Indiana Jones hat. Richard handed everyone an amplified ear peace which I thought was brilliant, thus being in a noisy neighborhood where we would otherwise compete to hear the talk over the crowds and noise.
I withheld my profession as a Special Agent until the end and I let Richard carry on unknowing of my experience and training in criminal investigation. Although I disagreed with his overall theory, I was quite impressed with his research. I was most impressed to find that he was one of the very few who challenged the conventional wisdom as to a number of aspects of the murders that have been accepted as definitive fact for face value. Richard offers a very good challenges to the absolutism that has otherwise been accepted most notably that the female victims were definitively working as prostitutes in White Chapel. This spirited challenge equally calls into question their behaviors on the night of their death and the eyewitness testimony concerning what several witnesses "believed" they were seeing. Richard equally pointed out some significant vulnerabilities in the eye witness testimony that has for the most part been accepted as accurate and factual. I really appreciated his critical analysis and thinking of the murders not being a regurgitation of the same hashed out run of the mill analysis.
I would highly recommend Richards walking tour.

Richard was great! It wound up being just our family of 4 with him which allowed us to really get to hear the facts and the theories. Even with a max of 12 though, it still would have been great. We saw some groups of 30+. He uses an iPad to show what things looked like during the time of the killings, and he has really done his research and knows A LOT about Jack the Ripper. He also humanizes the victims. Would definitely recommend.
Response from Host, Jun 2023
I'm so glad you all enjoyed the tour and I really appreciate you taking the time to post that wonderful review.
Thank you and best wishes

We had a great time with Richard. The tour started on time and was the perfect length. Richard was extremely knowledgeable and we enjoyed that the tour was more focused on the facts and the victims instead of the murderer. Both my sister and I love true crime and have read a lot about Jack the Ripper. We learned so much more from Richard. Telling the story of the Ripper killings from the perspective of the victims and the history of the neighborhood was a great new perspective for us. I would recommend Richard's tour to anyone who wants unbiased facts instead of sensationalized drama.
Response from Host, May 2023
Hi Erica thank you so much for that spectacular and thoughtful review!
It was such a pleasure to have you and your sister Amanda for company on the tour last night.
So glad you enjoyed it and took the time to write such a great review.
Enjoy your London trip and take happy memories back to New Orleans.

Seeing some of the Whitechapel buildings that are still here was eerie. It really wasn't that long ago!
Colonial64, Apr 2023
I cannot say enough about how great this tour experience was. Our guide had an encyclopedic knowledge of the history and culture of Whitechapel, the Jack the Ripper events and their effects on British society at the time. The tour is geared toward brisk walking, so wear some comfortable shoes . I cannot recommend this tour more highly. It was a great experience.
Response from Host, Apr 2023
Thank you for that great review I really appreciate you taking the time to doing that.

Our tour guide, Richard was fantastic ! Full of knowledge, engaging and very entertaining. We couldn't have wished for a better guide to share the JTR story and walk the streets of this now super charming area of London. We saw a number of larger groups which confirmed we made the right decision by choosing a smaller group (12 and under) tour - definitely more personable and interactive.
Response from Host, Oct 2022
Thank you Melanie for that wonderful review and I have to say it was a real pleasure having you and Jim on the tour last Saturday night.
Very best wishes

We had an amazing and fun time with Richard. He is knowledgeable and funny and has a really unique and interesting take on this legend. He doesn’t focus on being “spooky” or gory but on the lives of the woman who died and some of the theories around who Jack may have been and had some fascinating insights. Highly, highly recommended this tour!
Response from Host, Sep 2022
Thank you for taking the time to post that wonderful review. You were great company and I am so glad that you enjoyed the tour.

James_G, Aug 2022
Our guide was Richard. He was knowledgeable and enthusiastic. However, his tour focused almost solely on the backgrounds of the five victims. He was very into the theories of why each woman became a victim.
We were expecting to hear the gory side of the murders and a lot more about the most likely suspects. After all, it is a “Jack” tour, not a “background of the victims” tour. We wanted scary and creepy but got educational and theoretical.
Response from Host, Aug 2022
Hi James thank you for posting your review. I am sorry it wasn't what you expected. When you read the description was there anything that suggested that I would include the gory or the scary and creepy?
Here is my description.
"Maximum group size 12 so you will not be following 35 or 40 people. We start at Whitechapel Underground Station because that's where Jack the Ripper started. With the help of the FBI Special Agent John Douglas's 1988 profile of Jack the Ripper and Scotland Yard's 2008 geographical profile you will explore Jack the Ripper's territory from his first murder in Buck's Row to his last in Dorset Street. You will discover the victims story. Who they were. Why they were targeted. How they could have been killed so swiftly and silently. We will examine some of the assumptions that were made at the time. Assumptions that are still popular with today's 'Ripperologists'. It's a truly fascinating story that goes beyond the cliche of the toff in his top hat and opera cape seeking his next victim among the raddled fourpenny whores of Whitechapel. And whether you've only heard his name or read a dozen books on Saucy Jack I want to share this story with you."
The reviews should have also indicated the focus of the walk. One very recent review that you would have seen actually gave it the heading:
"Very kid friendly tour" and went to say
marce112005, Jul 2022 "Richard our tour guide was on time and a lot of fun. My kids and I enjoyed Richards story telling of Jack the Ripper. If you are looking for a kid friendly tour this is definitely one. It’s not scary at all but very interesting."
And none of the reviews would have indicated that it was in anyway gory, scary or creepy.
"Wonderful experience. Absolutely fascinating! Richard is probably the best guide I have ever had the pleasure of exploring with and I have taken hundreds of tours over the years!"
"Very sound knowledge of his subject and he brought the characters to life!"
"Outstanding Walk With Richard. This was an outstanding walk with Richard, a master raconteur with great passion for and knowledge of his subject. We 8 family members were enthralled by the chance to peer into a grisly period of Victorian London with the guidance of a true expert in the field. The intimate group size was a bonus and, for my wife and me, preferable to the larger numbers in a Ripper tour we did maybe 10 years back."
"Fantastic Experience. Such a great experience, really enjoyed all of the fascinating detailed information and loved his passion for the subject. Really fascinating, really glad we did the tour. Highly recommended."
"Wonderful tour, wonderful guide. Richard is an excellent guide, really impassioned. I loved the intimacy of this walk compared to other large groups doing the tour. I highly recommend!”
However James I am sorry you were disappointed but I hope you will agree it wasn't because the product description and reviews misled you.
Very best wishes

Very enjoyable walk, the small group size was fantastic and made for a
very enjoyable experience where you didn’t miss anything. Richard was knowledgeable and engaging. His passion for history was evident all the way through and not only did we learn a lot there was also the opportunity to discuss the topic and ask questions. We highly recommend this walk with Richard, we are now off to read some of the books he recommended.
Response from Host, May 2022
Thank you for that lovely review Rebecca. It was lovely to have your company on the tour. Hope you enjoy the rest of your holiday.

George_G, Apr 2022
Richard was well informed, his presentation was well prepared and well executed. The small group was worth it, it gave the time to ask questioned and interact. There is quite a bit of walking, not excessive, but should be taken into account.
Response from Host, Apr 2022
Hi George thank you for that great review. That's a good point you make about the walking and I have added to the description of the tour that you need good shoes because we cover 1.5 miles (2.5 km). Necessary in order to visit 4 murders sites and really get a feel for the vibrant district of Whitechapel.
Best wishes to you and your daughter.
Jade_P, Apr 2022
Richard was knowledgeable, engaging and efficient, making the whole experience entertaining and informative. We passed several of the larger sized tour groups, and I was instantly glad we went with Richard.
You can't miss with his tour.
Response from Host, Apr 2022
