Itinerary
Meet your guide outside the San Marco Museum in central Florence, and admire the exterior of the 15th-century Dominican convent, considered one of Florence’s architectural gems.
Hear how the convent is still used by Dominican monks, and how it was commissioned by Cosimo I de 'Medici in the 1400s, with the work entrusted to Michelozzo — one of the greatest architects of the Renaissance.
Use your pre-booked ticket to bypass the main entrance lines, and set off on a private tour of the museum. See the Cloister of St. Anthony, and inspect the fresco-painted doors leading to the main halls.
Then, admire the frescoes by Dominican monk Fra Angelico (Beato Angelico), a great Renaissance master who once lived in the convent. Continue into the Great Refectory, kitchen, and service areas, and see the works by Fra Bartolomeo, another important Dominican monk and artist of the early 1500s.
Step inside the Small Refectory to marvel at the fresco of the Last Supper by Domenico Ghirlandaio, and then head to the monks’ cells to admire the museum’s showpiece: a cycle of frescoes created by Beato Angelico for his confrères monks.
Gaze at the stunning frescos, and visit the cell once used by Girolamo Savonarola, a Dominican friar and Renaissance firebrand who was burnt at the stake in Piazza della Signoria in 1498. Learn Savonarola’s story, and then explore the convent Library, home to priceless manuscripts owned by the Medici family.
Before or after your visit, take a look around Piazza San Marco, the square where the convent stands. Learn about the buildings from your guide, and stroll to the nearby Piazza della Santissima Annunziata, famous for the Santissima Annunziata church and Spedale degli Innocenti, Europe's oldest orphanage.
Your tour ends when you say goodbye to your guide near the starting point.

My mom and I had a fantastic tour of the monastery with a guide who was incredibly knowledgeable about all of the art. She showed us so much, and we were able to walk around independently at the end. We definitely recommend this tour. We’re also glad that we did the morning option—it wasn’t super busy with school groups yet so we really got to see everything up close.

This was one of the most unique museums we have ever visited. Our knowledgeable guide brought to life the living conditions, experiences, and work of those who lived in this convent in the 15th century as well as the life of some of its most notable inhabitants. We would never have gotten as much out of this visit without such a great guide.
