Fabulous experience. Mickey our host was wonderful and a fountain of knowledge. Some lovely food specialties to go with a great selection of wines.
This was a fabulous experience. Miki was very personable, extremely knowledgeable and incredibly passionate about Hungarian wines. We tasted and learned about numerous wines. It was wonderful. I highly recommend this Viator experience to others.
We had a fantastic wine tasting experience. Our host was incredibly knowledgeable and enthusiastic, and his passion for Hungarian wine really came across throughout the tasting.
We learnt a huge amount about Hungarian wines, the different regions and styles, and the stories behind what we were drinking. It was informative without ever feeling too formal or overwhelming, and we came away with a much better appreciation of Hungarian wine.
A really enjoyable and interesting experience that I’d happily recommend to anyone wanting to discover more about Hungarian wine.
Perfect. 11 wines from various areas of Hungary. Hostess (forgot her name, sorry) was friendly, very knowledgeable; answered all our questions and showed us where each wine came from.
Miki is very experienced about wines and shares that extensive knowledge, spiced with anecdotes and humour. We learnt new things and got to try lots of delicious and interesting wines as well as some delicious cheeses. His wine bar was cosy, as was the whole surrounding area. We’re planning to come back and were very pleased with our visit.

This is a wonderful tour of a variety of Hungarian wines—which were all new to us. Not to be missed! Bianca was wonderful.
This was one of the best experiences I had in Budapest that I wasn’t expecting. The wine tasting and food was excellent and generous. The knowledge of the person to took us through the tasting was knowledgeable and at no time disinteresting. A thoroughly memorable experience that I would highly recommend.

I have done my fair share of wine tastings, but this was the best. It felt like the culmination of someone’s life work. The sum of their learning and experience being shared with storytelling flair, and a pride and passion in the wines they are sharing and presenting.
I knew nothing about Hungarian wines, so was keen to start our holiday by trying some, I was blown away by what I learned at Wine the Gap in Budapest.
The space itself has character and a relaxing place to sit and enjoy a wine and and chat.
Miki, a wine journalist, storyteller, and walking encyclopaedia and atlas of Hungarian terroir isn’t here to just pour wine, he grounds it and contextualises it - not delivering a rote learned tasting notes - but knows his stuff and engages you by being engaging.
You get information about geology, climate, wine history, winemaker knowledge - most of whom he knows personally and then, somewhere in the middle of the a sentence and a story, he casually pours something exceptional and on the evening rolls. You’ll also get some delicious snacks to try.
We started bright and aromatic with Csereszegi Fűszeres from Gál - you’re getting elderflower, citrus peel and soft spice. A grape that feels like Hungary’s answer to Gewürztraminer, but lighter on its feet, a balanced nose and palate that really makes you stand up and take notice - these are good wines.
From there, the Szent Márton Rosé carried that clean, mineral freshness — red berries, a little wild strawberry, perfect acidity keeping everything conversational, sunshine and food-friendly. This was the best Rosé I can remember having.
Tokaj made its appearance (as it must) with Apukám Bora Furmint - wines from Tokaj are religiously harvested and made. The structure of this wine with green apple, quince, volcanic salinity. The kind of wine shows Tokaj isn’t just about sweetness — the right about of dryness in the Furmint shows backbone and depth.
Then we moved onto reds.
Kadarka Classic from Pastor Garage in Szekszárd, a light, almost Pinot-like in colour but packed with spice: paprika, sour cherry, a little earth. Light tannin but memorable.
Followed by the Bikavér Reserve, a bigger, fuller red. Darker fruit flavours, bit of pepper, layered oak. Structured acidity and lift. By the end of this one I was sure I loved Hungarian wines.
And finally, the Szamorodni Édes 2014 from Tokaj-Tállya. Honeyed apricot, mild marmalade, botrytis richness — but not overly sweet or heavy. Sweetness balanced by a volcanic spine Tokaj that I learned Tokaj is famous for.
What made the night though wasn’t just the wines Miki decided to share with us, it was his generosity of sharing his knowledge. Miki pours like someone who wants you to understand what makes the wines in Hungary special and great, not just trying to flog a few bottles to gullible visitors.
You leave feeling like you’ve travelled some of the vineyard roads, stood among the vines, seen some insights into what makes these winemakers tick, and all from a humble little wine bar in the city of Budapest.
I am so grateful for the hospitality, the conversation, and the education. I am excited to share the wines we purchased and brought home with people I care about.
If you like wine, and like learning more about it and expanding your understanding of it and of Hungarian wines specifically, please book in for a tasting at Wine the Gap. It is not just a clever name, it’s a very clever host and a great experience.

We loved our tasting! It was small and extremely perisonalble. We’ve done wine tastings in Spain, france, and Napa and this one felt more special it truely felt like we were sitting around with friends instead of some random tour. 10/10, highly recommend.

Mickey was amazing, you can really notice how passionate he is with his love and knowledge of wine. He had exceptional pairings and was very accommodating when I mentioned I had a nut allergy. This should be a "must-try" if you are trying to improve your knowledge of wine, or are interested in having some delicious wine.

I booked the private wine tasting for Hungarian wines and Miklos, the wine enthusiast, was my kind and attentive guide for the afternoon.
The experience was absolutely divine with excellent wines that catered to my palate. Miklos had a very good understanding and knowledge of the Hungarian wines and had some good surprises saved for me at the end. Every detail was crafted to perfection—would definitely recommend.
Miki was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about Hungarian wine and it's regions. He is particularly passionate about Tokaj. His wine selections were local and well thought through and he finished with an incredibly delicate and nuanced dessert wine. The whole experience was an eye opener for me and I'd recommend to anyone seeking some knowledge about these local (and sadly) hidden gems. For me the highlights were Furmint and Kadarka, with the Rose coming a close third.
Excellent Hungarian wine. Very in depth introduction to Hungary’s wine industry. Learned a lot about wine in general as well. Mickey is very dynamic which made the tour fun. Recommend.

Miki is very enthusiastic and knowledgeable about Hungarian wine. He taught us a lot of interesting facts regarding Hungarian wine and wine regions. We tasted some very good wines, and the snacks were delicious.
As wine novices we felt at ease with Miki and enjoyed the journey of discovering Hungarian wines- learning about the wine regions, the wine makers, the processes and everything wine related. The wines were remarkable and the snacks were good accompaniments.
