Great value

Randy_M, May 2026
Very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about history architecture and archeology. Well worth the time and money

You really shouldn't post...

Linda_C, May 2026
You really shouldn't post a picture of a castle that doesn't even resemble what we saw. The guide was really good and very informative, but walking on the exterior is not what I expected, even though the guide did send us a message to explain, I still think it's a bit misleading

Response from Host, May 2026

Dear Linda, First of all, thank you for your kind words regarding my knowledge and guiding. I truly appreciate that. However, I would like to clarify a few things, because there is nothing visually “misleading” about the tour presentation. The main cover image is a fictional logo that I personally created for the tour’s thematic identity and branding. It is meant to visually evoke the atmosphere of the medieval Buda Castle district - nothing more. That said, the logo is not entirely fictional either. It includes recognizable historical landmarks such as Matthias Church, the former Mary Magdalene Church (today known mainly through the surviving Buda Tower), and the medieval Stephen’s Tower, which was once one of the defining structures of the Royal Palace complex. During the tour, we visit or discuss all of these sites. Since Stephen’s Tower no longer exists, I show guests its former location in the Lion's Court, explain its history, and visually reconstruct its appearance through historical narration. I also discuss the major historical chapters of Matthias Church, illustrated with archival photographs. The same applies to the Mary Magdalene Church (“Hungarian Church”), which I often offer as an optional stop depending on the group’s interest or based on our 3.5hrs timeframe. Some guests enjoy the additional historical detour, while others prefer a shorter route through the medieval alleyways. All three landmarks represented in the logo are therefore directly connected to the tour itself. The logo simply represents the broader medieval skyline and atmosphere of Buda Castle, since this is fundamentally a thematic medieval history walk. Additionally, all the other building photographs shown on Viator and Tripadvisor are locations that we actually visit and discuss during the tour. I would also like to clarify that the term “Buda Castle” is often misunderstood. What many visitors refer to as the “castle” is actually the Royal Palace building itself. In reality, “Buda Castle” refers to the entire historic Castle District, which is why the name “Buda Castle Tour” is completely accurate. Furthermore, nowhere in my promotional photos do I show the interior of the Royal Palace, precisely because we do not enter its interior spaces. We do, however, walk around the palace complex, discuss its history, archaeological reconstructions, the story of the Matthias Fountain, and even examine original 15th-century stone carvings inside the lobby of the National Gallery. The tour description also clearly states that the interior halls of the Royal Palace are not visited. During the tour, I explain why: the original interiors were destroyed, and many of the current interiors were rebuilt in the 1960s as office spaces rather than restored historical rooms. Also, most walking tours of the Buda Castle District do not include the interior spaces of the Royal Palace either. There is one more-or-less official program operated under the name “Budai Várséták” by the well-known “Blue Umbrella” guides, where visitors may enter reconstructed historical spaces such as the Saint Stephen’s Hall or the Habsburg Crypt of Archduke Joseph. However, even they do not conduct full interior tours of the Royal Palace itself - just as other guiding companies and freelance guides generally do not - simply because there is very little original historical interior material left to present inside the building today. Most interior-focused tours in the palace area are instead specialized museum experiences, such as art-history tours centered on paintings and exhibitions, or archaeological-historical tours inside the Budapest History Museum. In the latter case, even external freelance guides are not permitted to conduct tours independently, as only museum-employed staff are authorized to guide within the museum spaces. In fact, two months before your tour, in February, I already politely explained this to you in advance and even mentioned that if you were looking for a different type of architectural or interior-focused experience, you were completely free to cancel the booking. This was not an excuse, but simply transparent communication beforehand. Considering all this, I honestly do not understand in what way the tour differed from what was described in detail before your visit. Since you neither responded to my message from February nor cancelled the booking at the time, I feel your 4-star review reflects personal disappointment rather than the actual content and value of the experience and tour itself.

Excellent tour

Vincent_P, Apr 2026
Matthew was passionate and thoughtful about the history of the Buda castle as well as the history of Hungary.

Response from Host, May 2026

Thank you for your kind words. I’m glad you enjoyed the tour and the historical perspective. It was a pleasure guiding you.

Great tour, highly recommended

Geoff_E, Apr 2026
Matthew went above and beyond to ensure we had a first class tour of the Buda Castle area. His depth of knowledge was fantastic and meant he was able to throw light on lots of even small architectural and archeological issues which made the 3 ¾ hours seem very short. Wandering the area without a guide of his passion would have meant missing so much detail. Do wear comfortable shoes as the surface varied from cobbles to loose dust to tarmac.

Response from Host, Apr 2026

Thank you very much for your thoughtful and detailed feedback! I’m truly glad you found the tour both engaging and insightful especially the deeper architectural and archaeological context. It was a pleasure guiding you through the Buda Castle area, and I appreciate your kind recommendation as well!

Matthew was an engaging...

Kristen_N, Apr 2026
Matthew was an engaging tour guide for my family, which is saying a lot with two teens who get bored easily. He knew so much about the architecture and history, and pointed out lots of interesting elements we never would have noticed ourselves. It was rainy and cold so we stopped for a coffee, which was a great chance to talk to him and our fellow tour participants about life and politics in Hungary. We also enjoyed a good restaurant after the tour based on his recommendation.

Response from Host, Apr 2026

Thank you, I really appreciate your thoughtful feedback. I’m especially glad to hear the tour kept everyone engaged even the teens, that’s always a good sign. Despite the weather, it sounds like we made the most of it, and I’m happy the coffee break added a bit more depth to the experience. Great to hear you enjoyed the restaurant as well. It was a pleasure guiding you and your family.

Castle history

Douglas_G, Apr 2026
The tour is of the castle history and structure,. The internal spaces of the castle are essentially office spaces not part of the tour

Response from Host, Apr 2026

Thank you for your feedback, I appreciate you pointing this out. Due to the many reconstructions over the centuries, the original interiors of the Royal Palace in the Buda Castle unfortunately no longer survive. Today, most of the interior spaces either function as offices or house museums, which is why they are not part of the tour. For those interested, the museums can of course be visited separately after the walk. Guided tours inside, however, are handled by the museum’s own licensed guides, so I’m not permitted to lead tours within those spaces. I hope the historical and architectural context of the castle still added value to your experience.

Great tour with a very knowledgeable guide.

Best Tour Guide Ever💫

Danielle_H, Dec 2025
I arrived and it was a very dark and cold night in December. The thought of walking for 3 hours didn't seem fun anymore and I was less than enthusiastic. Lol Quickly my attitude turned around, and I realized I was being guided on the most amazing historical and architectural journey back in time. Máté was not only knowledgeable, but passionate about everything. It was like being in the best history and architecture/interior design class that I've ever had. I found myself recording really long videos just because it was so much fascinating information, I wanted to be able to go back and listen again. He isn't just a tour guide he's a wealth of knowledge and brings it all into perspective, better yet...brings it all to light. He makes you want to step back into time and live amongst the people of the long gone eras and observe it all in person. So much history in this city. I would take any tour he offers and infact I did go on another personal tour with him the following day. I feel like I stumbled on a hidden gem finding Máté to show me the streets of Budapest. ✨ He made my solo experience in the city so memorable and I know it wouldn't have been the same without meeting him. Thank you Máté. 🙏

Response from Host, Jan 2026

Thank you very much for your kind and honest feedback. I completely understand that a cold December night doesn’t sound ideal for a long walk, so I’m especially glad the experience managed to turn that around. I truly appreciate your words about the depth and passion of the tour, and I’m happy it made your solo time in Budapest more meaningful. It was a pleasure guiding you, and thank you for trusting me with another tour as well. Thank you ❤️

Buda Castle Tour

Tracey_M, Nov 2025
We had a great time and learned so much about the architecture and history of the Buda side. It was an intimate tour and our tour guide was so knowledgeable as he was a historian and archeologist. We highly recommend this tour!

Response from Host, Dec 2025

Thank you for your thoughtful review. I’m very glad the tour gave you a deeper understanding of the architecture and history on the Buda side. The smaller group size always allows for a more personal experience, and it was a pleasure guiding you through the area’s archaeological and historical layers. I truly appreciate the recommendation, and I hope to welcome you back to Budapest in the future.

Amazing Matthew

Sangeetha_R, Nov 2025
Matthew was amazing, he talked about the history of Buda castle and explained the architecture and archaeological with so much passion it was amazing. Lots of little details we pointed out and in his iPad he had lots of pictures to show how it must have looked.

Response from Host, Dec 2025

Thank you for your generous feedback. I’m very glad the combination of history, architecture, and archaeological background resonated with you. The visual material on the iPad is there to help bring the past closer, so it’s great to hear it added to your experience. I appreciate your kind words, and I hope to welcome you again on a future visit to Budapest.

Must do!

Heather_B, Aug 2025
This was amazing! You do not tour inside the “castle” but take a walking history and architecture of Buda. Matthew was very knowledgeable and has a degree in archeology/history. He was able to answer questions and we learned so much. He went over and beyond!
