Arrive at the Manga School Nakano for your 2-hour manga lesson. Meet your instructor and listen to a brief lecture on techniques and the history of manga. Students of all skill levels are welcome; the instructor will adjust the lesson to you, whether you're a complete beginner or honing your craft.
Try out some manga production tools such as screen tones, inks, and three different types of specialized pen nibs. Begin working on your own manga-type character in a step-by-step way, listening to instructions or demonstrations with each step. Beginners can choose from various manga references to copy with the instructor's help. Manga drawing has several processes: pencil drawing (draft), inking (erasing all pencil lines), painting black parts, correcting mistakes, and adding highlights with white ink. The last step is pasting screen tones (gray parts, textures, effects).
At the end of your class, you'll walk away with your finished manga drawing as a souvenir.

I booked a private lesson for my 17 year old son and me. I'm a complete beginner but my son is at an intermediate level. Nao-san tailored the class very well for both of us. She encouraged and guided him to try out his own ideas (I followed templates). He was impressed with her skills and how she demonstrated techniques effortlessly on the whiteboard eg showing how with only a few changes you can change a mood or character completely. I really enjoyed trying the g pen and special manga tools.

Artist teen and dad got a kick out of this authentic experience with a successful, professional manga artist, saying it was "very cool"(!), especially learning about both the techniques and tools, but also about the history and development of the manga design language and semantics. Enjoyed going through the whole process with different tools/techniques and getting to do it themselves (but with added support when helpful). Both were also very excited about their final drawings. A great, unusual experience!

Nao was such an amazing teacher. She was so knowledgeable, with a long career as a successful manga artist and series creator. She explained the basics of manga drawing so clearly and concisely, and patiently helped us to draw amazing portraits (two adults, and theee kids aged 8, 11, and 13). We had so much fun, I was shocked at how amazing everyone’s art looked. It was a real highlight of our vacation for all of us, can’t recommend this experience highly enough! Thanks so much Nao!

Really awesome experience. My kids thoroughly enjoyed it! Highly recommended. You don’t need to have any drawing skills to be able to participate in this workshop. My kids got Nao Yazawa the main sensei as their teacher and she was really good!

Even though I have very little artistic talent, the instructor, Nao, took the time with our whole family to ensure we each had a beautiful piece of manga to take home. The 11 year old manga obsessed son in our family loved the entire 2 hours. Nao worked with our tight schedule and was a pleasure to work with. I highly recommend.

We had the best time during our lesson with Nao! I booked the lesson for our kids, my husband and myself, and Nao was able to tailor her teaching to our different ages, levels, and styles. She was very kind, patient and knowledgeable. We enjoyed chatting with her about different manga and animes we like, and then choosing the characters for our drawings. We all ended up with incredible masterpieces. Highly recommended! We hope to do it again when we come back to Tokyo!!!

What a lovely experience to set around with the kids and work on something unique that would last a lifetime. Really enjoyed it.
One wrinkle was figuring out where they located. They speak minimal English and it was tough find them. Better instructions needed.

This was such a fun experience for all, parents and teens alike. The experienced Manga artist introduced us to the basics and we ended up producing some great (some passable - mine!) drawings. Our instructor shared fascinating insights into the history of Manga and how it works and the kids had fun discussing their favorite characters and series. A great shared family experience. We had an amazing time creating manga art with the Manga School in Nakano. We stayed over our session by an hour, we were having such a great lesson. I booked the session for my children, my nephew and I. We didn’t know what to expect, it the instructor was patient and kind, and so much fun. She enjoyed our class as much, as we did. She was excited and engaging, and was very thorough, using a whiteboard and several book references. We each got a set of supplies, and we got to keep our artwork while she kept copies to display and to post on Instagram.
