The tunnel is very easily accessed about 30 minutes drive from Reykjavik. Head east on road no. 1 and drive for about 18 km. Turn right onto road no. 39 (Þorlákshöfn) and drive for another 12 km. You will see our service building and parking lot on the left (if coming from Reykjavik).

What a great experience this was, we all thoroughly enjoyed this and were extremely lucky that there were only 3 of us on the tour, the lady that took us was very informative but not too serious (keeping it at our level) really enjoyed it and would definitely recommend

This lava tunnel tour was MUCH cooler than we all expected it to be, and well worth the cost and the hour-long stop! Our guide was wonderful and hilarious as well. We learned a lot about how the lava tunnels are formed. Make sure to bring a good camera!

A great place for photos and to learn about the volcanic activity on Iceland. We paired this with a hike to see the lava fields and active volcanoes along the coast nearby. Highly recommend a volcano day on Iceland.

I have read some negative comments about this experience, especially on Google, but, personally, I really enjoyed it. Luckily, it was a quiet day so there were only 5 total in the group. The guide was very informative and explained things without being patronising and with good humour. We had the full hour, and more, giving us time to take photos. I’m more annoyed that I am not a good enough photographer to give the photos justice to the beauty of the tunnel. I’ve only not given it 5 stars as it is quite expensive but then again, it’s probably reasonably priced for Iceland.

Our family did the tour with our kids, age 7 and 9. It was perfect for these age groups, easy walking path but still able to see all the things. We had a great time! The tour guide was amazing !

The Lava Tunnel tour was an amazing experience! The view inside the tunnel was absolutely stunning, and it was fascinating to see the different rock formations created by ancient lava flows. Our guide was very knowledgeable and made the tour both educational and enjoyable.
I especially appreciated learning about the difference between a regular cave and a lava tunnel — for example, how sound behaves differently, since you don’t hear an echo in the lava tunnel. It’s those kinds of small details that made the experience so unique and memorable.

Seeing the lava tunnel is a unique experience. It it very different than other lava tunes we have seen, like the ones in Hawaii.
Our guide had a heavy German accent and we found him to be hard to understand. I think if he would not try to speak so fast we may have understood more of his words.

The tour lasted about an hour and Meagan was a great guide. Very informative with some stories as well. Being able to explore this lava tunnel was not something I would be able to experience where I live.

It was cold, wet, interesting, informative and surprising. When the guide shut off all the lights and we shut all our lamps off it was awesome just being in complete, total darkness. Our hearing heightened and we were able to hear the dripping of all the water. Fantastic!

Walking inside a lava tube is a truly uniqur experience.
Once inside the lava tube, the guide explained the fascinating geology of the lava flows, the formation of the tunnel, and pointed out the incredible natural features like lava stalactites and multi-colored rock walls. The lighting inside is minimal and atmospheric, highlighting the raw beauty of the cave without overdoing it.
Our guide was fantastic – enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and clearly passionate about volcanic science and Iceland’s natural history.
The walk itself isn’t too strenuous. It felt safe throughout, and the group size was small enough that it didn’t feel crowded.
Highly recommended if you’re into geology, adventure, or just want to do something completely different from the typical sightseeing tours. It's a literal walk into the heart of Iceland’s volcanic history.

The Lava Tunnel is well worth your time. The tour guide was informative, funny and engaging.
The tunnel itself is bigger than you think it’s going to be. The path was easy enough for my 3 kids to walk.
You won’t regret taking this hour tour.
