The lava caves were super cool. They went very deep and it was stunning. They turned off the lights to experience total darkness which was awesome. MUST DO activity if you are staying near Reykjavik. Our guide Alex was funny and knowledgeable, he made the experience overall incredible.

We didn't know how this experience was going to be great and boy did it not deceive. Our guide had so much knowledge and fun facts, we had a blast!

The staff was very helpful in catering to me since I had just missed my scheduled tour. When I actually did the tour, I found the guide very entertaining and resourceful. I didn't actually love being in the cave with no lights since at one point they turn all the lights off to show you how it would be like alone in a cave. It only lasts for a minute. It's also very cold in the cave so bundle up!

We could not go in the tunnel because it cannot accommodate people with canes. We were told to contact Vator to get a refund.

Our tour guide was hilarious and mixed all the facts in with jokes and stories. We got to experience total darkness, which was surreal. Just make sure to dress warm! It’s constantly in the 30s in the tunnel.

Lava Tunnel Adventure

This was a great experience for our family with teens! There were other families with younger children and they also had a good time. This is not a handicap accessible adventure, rocky wet terrain walking down.

So cool!

Michelle_V, Aug 2026
This was such a cool experience. We did it on the start of our ring road trip. So very cool to learn about lava caves. I have only been in natural caves so this was interesting. And the guide was very kind, funny and informative. The coolest part I would say was when he turned the lights off and we truly were able to experience complete darkness in the cave. Wow!

Beautiful!

Melissa_A, Aug 2026
Awesome tour but it is very rocky and uneven. We traveled with a few older ladies and it was challenging for them. But they still did it, and loved it. Very friendly tour guides.

A Must Do-Easy Drive from Reykjavik

This was an amazing tour through a real lava tunnel. The drive was easy out of Reykjavek and the experience was unforgettable.

Educational

A bit of a drive out of town but well worth it. We came back through the lava fields which added to the adventure.

Touring the lava tunnels!

Katherine_C, Jun 2026
This experience was much better than I anticipated. The old lava tunnel was really neat to walk through, and our guide provided a lot of interesting facts along the way. It's so cool to experience the temperature changes, see the result of years and years of ancient lava flow and then be plunged into complete and total darkness towards the end of the tunnel/tour to see just how daunting it would be in a place like that without the use of headlamps or lights. Definitely one to experience if you get the chance!

Would not recommend

Shaleen_S, Jun 2026
A little misleading. They say suitable for all, but I found it difficult to navigate the uneven ground and 3 of us stopped half way. The caution they give you AFTER you buy the ticket is more accurate than the original presentation. They do provide trekking poles, which is nice, but also shows they are aware of the difficulties.

A MUST! Great Experience!

Daphne was a knowledgeable and wonderful guide. We absolutely enjoyed this Lava Cave tour--it was fascinating, fun, BEAUTIFUL, and we learned so much! Don't miss it!

Wonderful Experience

Jagoda_M, Jun 2026
It was amazing to see such a beautiful lava tunnel. Our guide Gerard was excellent, he made sure everyone in the group was able to keep up and felt comfortable. He also shared some history and interesting facts with us.

Tour experience

Sridhar_P, Jun 2026
Tour guide and he his knowledgeable narrative in the short 1hrs tour was very good. The lava tunnel with the lights, walking platform, spectacular details inside, the silence mode at the end and preview to the extreme tour were all worth it. 1hrs goes by as it was 15min.. If you are not claustrophobic extreme tour might be life long memory. Tour is worth every bit of time and $$ spend

Must see

Good time

Mitzi_A, Jun 2026
This was a fun experience. We took our 3 year old and 6 year old and it was just fine for them. It’s a short walk in the tunnel, with some uneven surfaces and stairs. We were running a little late so I messaged the tour operator and they responded right away. Great customer service, very knowledgeable guide, and overall a great experience. There is also plenty of parking at the facility and the check in process was quick and easy. It’s a little chilly in there and there’s some water drips so bring a coat or raincoat.

wear proper shoes and dress appropriately-it’s a great experience-but becareful-rocks were wet-a lot in inclining

Fun cave!

Wendy_C, May 2026
Bring a rain jacket because the cave drips! We wish we had known but there is also an optional tour separate from this one that goes into the unpaved portion of the cave! Awesome guid and loved the darkness.

Fun easy experience

Mervyn_P, Apr 2026
The location is not far from the capital if you are driving there and they have hourly slots. A popular trek into the 2nd largest lava tunnel in Iceland. Guided by our funny Greek tour guide, Dimitris, the experience was easy going and very enjoyable 1 hour trek. Free toilets and free parking on site.
